Coker Plans Sale I too have brought some very high quality plans from P.C. However, I am sure that the quality of the items he has for sale varies. If you feel that he has misrepresented an item to you, perhaps he would be willing to give you a refund. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "JOHN CURRIE" Subject: Re: Type 42's and other Warships involved in the Falklands Conflict Hi all, Just another quick dit on the schemes worn at the time of the Falklands Conflict, the reason that the 42's wore the black band was just to save any possibilty of a blue on blue engagement, the Argentines had and still have 2 Type 42, as a rule for the rest of the fleet, all black normally used on masts and funnels was painted over in ship side grey, some pennant No's on the stern were painted over. As with everything though research your subject thoroughly gather your info, double check were needed, then if you get it wrong, Look in the mirror and say, "oh well such as life" or as was sang on the upperdeck of the SHEFFIELD as the ship burnt around them "ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE" Life is too short Enjoy the modeling before the eyes go. John PS many thanks to everyone for all the responses for info on the Monitors Abercrombie and Roberts, Big Gun Monitors is one neat book. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Joseph W. Reyna" Subject: Re: 1/400 Scale Kit of French Carrier Bearn Felix, Fantastic News! Count me among those who would like to purchase at least one kit of this fascinating early carrier. Is there someone to contact regarding notification of interest or to reserve a kit? I picture a display of BEARN, along with the Heller ARROMANCHES, CLEMENCEAU/FOCH, and the new DeGAULLE - a history of French Naval Aviation! I wish this new venture every conceivable success, and hope they will quickly find it necessary to add new subjects for the 1/400 scale community! Again, thanks for sharing this wonderful news! What a time to be ship model-builder! Joe -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Marc Flake Subject: Pearl Harbor Movie Book While browsing through the new books at a local book seller, I came across the movie tie-in picture book for the upcoming movie "Pearl Harbor." I have read (and sometimes written) misgivings about this movie in previous SMML volumes, but after looking at these color stills from the actual movie -- I have to say that I'm very excited about this movie. Yes there are shots of modern destroyers getting blown up, but there is an overwhelming number of stills showing models (real and computer drawn) of the actual Battleship Row ships. I think only the most picky pessimist will have problems with the depiction of the Pearl Harbor attack. If you have seen the preview with the bomb dropping on the Arizona, let me tell you that the image of Battleship Row shown in that clip is probably one of the world's largest dioramas. Those are models down there, folks. And this book shows the diorama from at least two other angles. There's also a shot of two guys working on a 1/20 scale model of the Oklahoma. In 1:1 scale, there's a shot of the Oklahoma rolling over with men on deck (For the picky pessimists, it may be rolling over the wrong way -- but I don't care). There are shots of five B-25s parked on Hornet (Lexington), shots of Japanese planes being readied on Akagi (Lexington), awesome attack shots and an air-to-air combat scene with aircraft chasing each other between buildings. Those of you who saw "Armageddon" might remember the scene with Bruce Willis leading his "astronauts" towrad the camera. This time we've got Alec Baldwin as Doolittle leading his pilots toward the camera. This movie looks awesome, guys. Now I know why Revell is releasing those special double kits for Pearl Harbor and the Doolittle raid. The cottage industry may want to take a tip and start producing some Battleship Row kits. Vendors may want to stock up with them, too. Marc (who is jazzed for this movie) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: John Clements Subject: Prinz Eugen & Winton Book on Scharnhorst Two items relating to posts in volume 1217: Prinz Eugen: Just to correct a minor point in the very useful post by Peter Mispelkamp on the year by year changes in the ship's AA fit - the late war 40mm's that replaced the 37mm twins and other pieces were singles not quads - see the many pictures of the Prinz in Copenhagen after the surrender. Winton book on the Scharnhorst: This was first published in 1983 and does not contain anything new. I was disappointed when I bought my copy some years ago. John Clements -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "chenyangzhang" Subject: Alan Raven Hi Ed Just to clarify some points - I certainly did contact Alan about an exchange of information specifically on JKNs before Volume 1 appeared but received no response. I also contacted him about Mountbatten Pink after publication of Volume 1 but after one e-mail in which he re-affirmed his list without considering the points I raised. A further e-mail evoked no response which is surprising as the points do invalidate his list and research on this particular subject. Perhaps as you say he felt that I was not worth responding to but that is a very short sighted attitude. As for his recent work I would not use the term fantasy but there is some question as to the reliability of his research in respect of the JKNs. You however will have to take my word for it until my book comes out as I am not prepared to share my research except on one point. I repeat the offer in my previous e-mail if Alan e-mails me the photo of Kandahar which shows the camouflage scheme in Volume 2 I will admit my fault and apologise on line. Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "chenyangzhang" Subject: Death of the Scharnhorst Hi Falk Winton's Death of the Scharnhorst is an excellent account of the Battle of North Cape in which the Scharnhorst was lost. Detail is good and the events are covered in considerable detail. It's not a new book so if they are advertising at as new it must be a reprint. Worth buying. Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Schiefet@cs.com Subject: USS Arizona Memorial Web page Greetings, A good source for Arizona related information is the Arizona Memorial web site. The ship's store has numerous books related to Arizona, the memorial, the attack and so forth. If you can't get there in person, the web site is the next best bet. I ordered several books from these folks. http://members.aol.com/azmemph/index.htm http://www.pearlharborattacked.com/pearlharborshopbooks.htm http://www.pearlharborattacked.com/pearlharborlinks.htm Steve Singlar Pelham, NH -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Lamar Jones Subject: personal vituperation I think the least admirable messages sent to SMML are those which engage in personal scorn and denigration. It seems to me that SMML can serve its most valuable role by providing good technical interchanges between model builders, not in attacking others. There is a place to alert others about genuine fraud, but to disagree in civil ways about interpretations of data, techniques, etc, seems to me to be displaced. SMML lost Alan Baker's absolutely first class knowledge, attacks were made again Bill Gruner, and now Alan Raven is a target. I much prefer to be able to access knowledge wherever it exists, and not to see it lost because of simple nastiness. Lamar Jones -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Infomation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: SAMI ARIM Subject: SMMLCon 2nd day update Hello all, the second day of our meeting is over. We had a very nice wheather today and it didn't matter anyway, because we were on board of Hornet all day. We had exccelent seminars and it all went very well. First in the morning Paul Jacobs was talking about scratchbuilding and improving 1/1250 scale waterline ship models. Paul was very well prepared and gave us a complete account of the hobby. Later in the morning Bert Mc Dowell had a very interesting session about improving the Hasegawa 1/700 scale Essex class kit. Bert already finished 3 models of the class and working on the fourth unit. According to Bert the kit needs a lot of accurizing to make it a decent model. After lunch Gary Kingzett took the spotlight and had a very informative seminar regarding the Glecoe's Oregon. Boy, I feel like I am giving a minutes report of an IPMS meeting show and tell! The fourth speaker was Kurt Greiner of the warshipsunderway website and talked about radio controlled warship modeling. Later we all went for a waterfront dinner in Alameda and closed the day. We are looking forward tomorrows IPMS show and contest.
