All posts either sent in today or any further posts regarding this will not be posted in the short term. See below for some ideas on what to post next. Shane & Lorna -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Shane & Lorna Subject: What's on the workbench/reading table Hi all, In true rec.models.scale form after some "venting" comes the following inevitable questions ;-). What are people either building, looking to build or purchase and what are you reading at the moment??? Lorna is doing the following: Scratchbuilding a Sopwith Camel with a difference Finishing off an anime figure Reading the Short 184 Datafile - very good, now I need a kit of the bloody thing. Shane is doing the following: 1/700 Tamiya HMS Onslow with WEM PE (fixing it up after the accident last year). 1/700 OzMods HMAS Vampire - now that I have some very nice photos of her. Reading a book on HMAS Canberra, which is very good. Shane & Lorna -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Shane & Lorna Subject: Health Warning BEWARE NAVAL MODELLERS DISEASE HIGHLY INFECTIOUS TO PERSONS OF ALL AGES Symptoms: Sufferer becomes confused and bewildered when not near a dockyard. Will be observed wandering around with blank expression muttering strange words. Rapid rise in temperature at sight of ships. Behaviour often becomes erratic. Much rushing about and waving of arms, foaming at mouth is not unusual. Sometimes violent to those who are not afflicted with this disease. Patient spends much time and money at model, book and magazine stores. Seems not to notice presence of normal people. Condition incurable, however, certain measures can be taken to alleviate patients suffering. Patients MUST be kept well supplied with books, kits and magazines. Should be encouraged to go to model clubs, naval open days and to SMMLcons where they can meet other victims of the illness and exchange ideas. Friends and relations can assist by maintaining a serene demeanour, even when patient is gabbling unintelligibly about Flowers, Yellow turrets and RN colours. In case of emergency contact your nearest model club/Naval Historical Society where they have been trained in rendering succour to those afflicted. IGNORE THIS HEALTH NOTICE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: JoeSims@webtv.net (Joe Sims) Subject: Re: WW2 sqd. colors Dear Matt, For the sake of clarification, let me ask this question. Do you mean squadron markings ? As far as I'm aware there were no specific colors as far as camo schemes for any particular sqds. Everything as far as color was pretty standard at that time. Now. if you're asking about specific colors, as far as camo, that would pertain what time frame the aircraft is going to built as. Is there a specific sqd. or plane your brother is interested in. Or is he interested in WW2 naval aviation and sqd. markings in general ? I was an airplane guy myself before I '"saw the light" (Actually I still build planes and armor, but, I don't tell anyone.). Respectfully, Joe -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Peter K. H. Mispelkamp Subject: Re: Prinz Eugen Camouflage To the best of my knowledge, the Prinz was probably painted light - medium grey overall during the Bismarck episode. The darker patches that are visible at her bow and stern when she arrived at Brest are probably the result of the gradual erosion/weathering of her latest paint job, revealing traces of her Baltic "working up" scheme. If you have access to Stern's book, you can see that he has tried to emulate this erosion on his image of the Bismarck during her ill-fated Atlantic mission. Sincerely Peter K. H. Mispelkamp -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Pletscher-Lenz-Schneider" Subject: New Kombrig Models (Warning) Hi all There are eight new Kombrig models of Soviet Cold War missile cruisers: Four Kyndas 70303 Grozny 70304 Varyag 70305 Admiral Folin 70325 Admiral Golovko and four Kresta-Is 70313 Admiral Zozula 70314 Vitse-Admiral Drozd 70315 Vladivostok 70316 Sevastopol. This sounds pretty good as these are all four vessels of each class. But beware! All four kits of either type are identical except of four 30mm Gatlings and their deck houses which are added to two ships in each class. The identical pairs are: 70303 Grozny - 70305 Admiral Folin (both with Gatlings) 70304 Varyag - 70325 Admiral Golovko (both without Gatlings) 70313 Admiral Zozula - 70314 Vitse-Admiral Drozd (both without Gatlings) 70315 Vladivostok - 70316 Sevastopol (both with Gatlings, although, according to Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships, Sevastopol never received her Gatlings). The parts are cast cleanly but with the "old" more brittle resin, sometimes even using different types of resin in one kit. The whole style of these kits is that of the earlier Kombrig models, i.e. they are not too much detailed and by far no match to their last four destroyers of the Russo-Japanese War era. As far as the Kyndas go, they are inferior to the Wave-Line kits of Grozny and Admiral Golovko, but they are considerably cheaper (at least here in Germany). If it wasn't for these intersting ships, I'd regarded their prices rather "heavy". But I like the shape of the Krestas, and as long as there is no alternative... Everyone enjoyed touring the ships and maritime sites in San Francisco, (however the special effects department got a bit carried away simulating a typical winter day in the North Atlantic that Friday). (Plus, that afternoon, we were all grateful that Duane had kept his Automobile Club membership active.....keys, we don't need no keys?????????). Saturday's lectures and discussions were all very interesting and informative. Our very extensive tour of the USS Hornet was also a high point of the conference. But most of all, we all enjoyed the SMML comradeship, sharing our common interest of ships and modeling. (As the Southern California mouse sings, "It's a small world, after all."......I live very close to Disneyland and it get's to you after several years). Well done Duane and Sami! Regards, Dave Way Huntington Beach, CA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: GKingzett@aol.com Subject: Re: SMML Con Hornet Just got home, absolutely pooped, but had a great weekend with all the SMML'ers on the Hornet. Sami Arim and Duane Fowler did a fantastic job. I am not surprised they have colds, I don't think they got much sleep over the weekend, but they were unfailingly well prepared and helpful. Thanks guys. Let's do it again somewhere next year. You folks who have not been able to attend these conferences are really missing something. Start saving now. It is great to be able to put faces with the names we recognize from the list, and each person we met had something valuable to contribute. We saw many excellent models, and I think even the nonbuilders went away inspired to start and finish something.
