Get some Ace Resin >> I would suggest getting an Ace Resin kit and making some copies of the F-14s. Now I'm sure someone out there will be screaming about copyright infringement, but making duplicates for ones own personal use is something I have no problem with. Not to mention the fact that it would save you a LOT of money << Tsk Tsk Tsk :-) Regards, Bradford Chaucer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: P.C. Coker Plans Sale >> All in all, I was extremely happy with my purchase and I hope other SMML members continue to deal with Coker. It would be best to call or e-mail a request asking for an honest appraisal of the plan's configuration and content before purchasing anything either by phone, catalog or over the internet. << I too have bought from Mr Coker several times and was completely satisfied. I would suggest that the person who had the problem contact him to resolve the issue. Regards, Bradford Chaucer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: Sims class DD >> Hey Steve - How about the book on the Sims class destroyers -- to help build that wonderful 1:192nd scale kit of yours? << >> I am working on that as we speak. I hope to print that title late this year, or early next year. I have collected over 150 photos, numerous copies of original blue prints, so I will start putting it together soon. << I presume that there'll be a hefty discount for those of us who sprang for a kit!! :-) Hurry up and get the book out before i loose control and actually build something! ;-) Regards, Bradford Chaucer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: steven lau Subject: Tamiya 1/350 Fletcher I am about to embark on the Tamiya 1/350 Fletcher. I plan on building her as the Radford DD-446 as the kit looks like it can be done this way as a very early Fletcher. I've got the Gold Medal Models photo etch set. Anything else I should know? Any significant problems or major inaccuracies? I would appreciate any thoughts or advice from those who have built the kit before. Thanks, Steve Lau -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Ned Barnett" Subject: On the bench Good thread, Shane and Lorna I'm working on my scratchbuilt Noah's Ark in 1/293rd scale (no kidding), the smaller Revell Arizona (warming up for the bigger one) - those are my primary ones. Also (being eclectic), I'm working on a model railroad layout circa 1830-1860 (with a railcar-barge interface for shipping interest), the airliner (B-737-200) that flies workers to and from Area 51 (no shit, Sherlock - I see several of the fleet of 5 every day) and the Hummer I someday hope to own in real-life. Also a couple of Polish armored cars from 1939 and a couple of world war I proto-tanks ... Mainly, I'm working on the IPMS/USA ship column, reviewing kits and such and dry-fitting them, researching them, etc. for quality. WEM has sent me a great selection, as have some of those wonderful after-market folks who are SMML-members here. But between times, I'm pushing plastic on the two ships. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Franz Aigner GmbH" Subject: WEM & 10cm turrets for Taiho Caroline, Would you consider producing an accurate mount for the 10cm guns on Tamiya's Taiho? Tamiya must have sold thousands of these kits, and a good many modelers will be unhappy with the inaccurate mount provided. Still hoping, Richard -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Mithrand@aol.com Subject: converting? Hi list after months of badgering a friend of mine whose whole world rotates around building tank dioramas (WHERE'S THE SICK BAG), he's given in and decided to build a fletcher and wants to use the Tamiya 1/350. I have never seen this kit out of the box and was wondering how accurate or not the kit is before he pogs out the money for it. any help with this attempted conversion would be appreciated. to answer the whats on the work bench query 1/700 tamiya KGV with WEM photo etch 80% complete and standing by 1/500 Monogram USS Chicago. happy modelling Roy Allen -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "ALBERTO MONTES" Subject: what´s on workbench Hi all I have just about to finish my 1/600 SS FRANCE, and I am working on 1/600 resin SS NORMANDIE what I think will take me working on it for a long time. I am now reading the last book I have got about liners, NORMANDIE QUEEN OF THE SEAS, is a wonderfull book about this magnificent ship. Happy modelling to all Alberto Montes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "David Miller" Subject: What's on the workbench? 1) 1/500 Nichimo Graf Spee. 2) 1/700 JMSDF LST-4151 next, finish my Lindberg LSD which I started in 1964 and has moved with me incomplete and sans box over the years! Actually, the Nichimo Graf spee falls in that category too, except that I started it in 1979. Read? I only look at the pictures! Dave Miller Palm Bay, Florida -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Susan Cowardin" Subject: What's on the workbench My name is Steve, and I'm a recovering aircraft modeler. I stumbled upon SMML quite by chance and decided to try my hand at ship modeling. WOW! WOW!, I mean WOW!! So far I have built in 1/700 Saratoga in her splinter pattern and Tamiya's Indianapolis. In 1/350 Tamiya's Fletcher and now the same kit but in square bridge The Sullivans. I particularly like the opportunities to add as much detail as I care to add. All have brass etched rails, shields, figures. The opportunities are really quite satisfying; for instance, the aft mast on the DD took about four hours to construct using many different materials. But here's the best part. All are in dioramas! I'm trying to make converts in the IPMS chapter here in Richmond, Virginia. Even if they don't like ships, they are lured toward the story in the diorama. Now, the only problem is, what to do with the small stockpile of aircraft kits? Perhaps a kit burning? I look forward to and enjoy all of your comments, suggestions, frustrations, and the way you police each other. I have been able to glean so much information in such a short time. I have a 1:400 Heller Admiral Graff Spee which is about 3/4 finished although still awaiting some etched metal parts i.e. doors/hatches and the metal handrails. Awaiting re-work is my 1:600 Airfix HMS Iron Duke, I have just received the "WEM PE 611 kit" and should really improve the look of this great old ship. On the slips are a total of 12 other ships, the majority being Heller 1:400 i.e. Prinz Eugen, Gneisenau, Admiral Scheer, Richelieu. I also have the Revell 1:350 USS New Jersey and Tamiya's 1:350 Yamato. I also have a 1:450 Hasegawa HMS Vanguard!!!, Has anyone got any ideas on how to improve the "Collectors quality detail". There are no portholes at all above the hull and no doors or hatches anywhere!!! As for my reading, I have just finished (for the 3rd time) King George V class Battleships by V.E Tarrant. Brilliant book if you are a fan of the KGV's. British Warships of the second world war by John Roberts is another of my "just finished" books although I was disappointed with the ships drawings, far too small. I feel they would have made better fold-outs for the reader interested in ship design. Currently being read is Peter Padfields Battleships, Very interesting book which documents the rise of these ships from the 1850's through to the end of W.W.II also the development of the big guns. My wife doesn't understand me!!!!! Paul Lewis. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: David_L._Miller@ccmail.wiu.edu Subject: Re: What's on the workbench I am nearly finished scratch building a 1/350 CVA43 Coral Sea. I patterned the hull from the Tamaya kit and developed plans by way of photo interpretation - not perfect, but close. This ship is for a client who runs a hardwood/exotic wood supply business and he wanted to use as many types of wood in the ship as possible (he served on her in the early 1980's). He supplied all of the wood :>). Twenty-six different kinds of wood are used in the ship, stand, and aircraft (including two AWACS). I hope to finish the model this weekend, and get some photos for the web, so hopefully you can see this model in a few weeks. It is very pretty in the flesh, and I hope photos can do it justice. Some of the grains and tones are very subtle. The subject and using the different woods was my client's idea, otherwise I would have built a carrier for which I had good plans, and would have painted it gray. This project has really expanded my repertoire, and I have really enjoyed working on it. I just received a commission to build an escort carrier, the Liscome Bay. This one is also at i/350 and will be painted in the camo scheme used at her loss in November of 1943. This (and a 1/48 scale Avenger) will be a Christmas present for one of the survivors of the sinking. I am looking foreword to this project. Happy modeling Dave Miller -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: Timothy Dike Subject: What's on the workbench/reading table? My two current projects are a 1/700 1956 USS Boxer CVS-21 in her ASW role. I have also been working on my USS Cushing DD-376, yes still. I hope to finish it this year, but the website keeps stealing my time. Finaly managed to get hold of French plans of "Hoche" (1890) and I am starting to psyche myself up to scratch build it in 1/400 scale, such a weird and wonderfull ship. Did have close look at Combrig's and Modelkrak's "Oslabia" and "Suvorov" and it's a real pain in the butt. Combrig's detailing and casting stinks but overall hull shapes are ok, Modelkrak cast and small details are nice but hull shapes and superstructure arrangements (specjaly on "Suvorov") are pure fantasy!!. I am trying to find their email address to write and shake their tree a bit. What a waste of effort!!! Two questions, one to German list members, I have obtained a partial set of plans of the "Brandemburg" class of battleships (1891) from Russia of all places. It includes plans of oberdeck, aufbandeck and bruckendeck and enough cross-sections at various hull stations to attempt scratch building, what is missing is a side view and superstructure plan above bruckendeck. The guestion is is it possible to obtain missing drawings from somewhere in Germany and if any of German museums exhibit a model of any ship of the class so photographs of the details can be obtained?? Question two-do any of the UK based modelers know an email address of Brian King a British large scale ship modeler of great skill and talent. I have seen a photo of his model of "Duilio" (1880) and would love to have a closer look at his model. All help would be greatly appreciated. London" Subject: Re: Bombardment of Hartlepool Mike Cooper's recent posting re a BBC program on the bombardment of this port on Dec 16th 1914 has very personal connotations for me. My father was in the Royal Engineers which, in those days before the formation of the Royal Signal Corps, was responsible for such things as telephone lines. He was up a pole at Hartlepool stringing telephone wire when an 11 inch shell from SMS SEYDLITZ landed nearby knocking him off the pole. His resulting injuries put him into the military hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Such were his injuries that he was excluded from a posting to the Western Front in France and he stayed in Newcastle for the balance of the war. It was in Newcastle that he later met my mother who was serving in the WAAC (Womens' Auxilliary Army Corps) and they married in 1920. So such is fate I can say that I owe my existence to the gunnery officer on SMS SEYDLITZ and an 11 inch shell no doubt manufactured by Messrs Krupp. Michael London -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21) From: "Russ Smith" Subject: Re: What Shane is reading Shane, Which Canberra, the WWII one or present one? I just bought the Tamiya 1/350 scale Prince Of Wales yesterday. I had also ordered the King George V, but it was back ordered. Heaven knows when I'll ever get around to building them, though, or where I'll put them when they are done. Currently in progress are two (gasp, sin, horrors) car models. All right, all right, I can always pretend that they belong to a couple of the crew members. I am not currently reading anything except my latest issue of Plastic Ship Modeler. And last, but not least, I am listening to my mp3 file of Glenn Miller's version of Anchors Aweigh while I'm reading SMML. Best wishes to all. I would like to add that French ships were also involved and that they lost, among others, the battleship BOUVET. One correction to Bruce's posting, however, the IRRESISTABLE was not lost in this campaign but was scrapped after the war, while adding that the battleship TRIUMPH was sunk by a U-Boat despite the fact that her anti-torpedo nets were deployed. It is said that the torpedo went through the nets "like a hot knife going through butter" and was a factor in the abandonment of this method of defence very soon after. Would love to build one again with Exocet and Seawolf conversion, especially. It was a pleasure to see caring and impartial judges at work - and the Bogue was literally eye-popping. I liked what was done to the hopeless Lifelike Yamato kit - beautiful - but the Bogue was a microscopically accurate work of the jeweler's art. Nice seeing the guys again - sorry I missed almost all the goodies, but the built kits were worth the price of admission, big-time! This event will coincide with the Joint Services open house weekend at Andrews Air Force Base, in Washington, DC, so those SMMLies planning to come up to DC to attend the open house can also now attend the SMMLcon, and vice versa! If you haven't already done so, please let me know if you think you might attend, so I know how many people to expect. (Please contact me privately by e-mail.) I will post instructions for getting to Nostalgic Plastic as the date of the SMMLcon approaches. Hoping to see you all there! I just spoke to the co-chair of the convention in Chicago and he says the room block they allowed for the Nats originally have been literally blown away by the response of modelers. The room block have been dramatically increased to meet the demand for rooms. It sounds like this is going to be a real blowout! Who is going to the Nationals this year? I'm going to make the drive up from Oklahoma, but I'm going to have to allow an extra $200.00 just for gas! The last I heard on the news, gas was over $2.00 per gallon in Chicago. Yeah, I know you guys in the UK and Europe are feeling REAL sorry for me. Keep in mind we have to travel a lot farther over here. Rusty White Flagship Models Inc.
