I understand the Premier of the movie Pearl Harbor is scheduled for 25 May aboard the USS John Stennis parked in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Should be quite a showing. Be there if you can make it!!! v/r HBlecha -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Duane Fowler Subject: Modelers wives Just before my wife went out the door for the last time she was kind enough to place ten of my best 1/350 full hull battleships, cruisers, and a destroyer on permanent display at the local landfill. To say that I envy John and Shane would be putting it mildly. Regards, Duane (I still got the house) Fowler -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: VONJERSEY@aol.com Subject: Re: "Mark C Krumrey" Mark C. Krumrey - I finished my Revel /426 Arizona last Thanksgiving. I thought it was a great model to work with. I used the Toms PE kit just for the cranes, signal yards, catapults and the railing around the deck. I did some other modifications like modifying the birdbath and the flag poles at fore and aft but that is about it. I didn't replace the other railings. I did replace the place supplied with kingfishers from HR Products - though slightly our of scale they only glare out at me. I haven't made the leap into airbrushes so I used the venerable spraycan method to good effect: Testors flat red for the lower hull Testors gunship gray for the hull and superstructure Testors afrika mustard for the deck (looks great) Testors gray primer for the spotting towers I use black trim tape for the boot line (note it has to be sprayed with flat clear coat, however the chemical reaction will cause the plastic tape to shrink and split in a few places- no worries, it is slight and a little touchup with flat black applied with a brush will set it right. I mounted the whole thing on a walnut base from model expo and used lengths of brass tube as pedestals. Looks great. I just finished the airfix /600 Belfast and the Tamaya Indianapolis (also using Toms PE) much fun My next project is the airfix /600 Queen Elizabeth - to match the revell /570 Queen Mary I finished last year, having started on it in 1975. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: aandmblevins@att.net Subject: What's On the Bench/Reading table Currently at work on the Bomb Vessel Granado from the AOTS series. Using a Mantua kit and bashing it considerably in 1/96 scale. Waiting in the wings are the semi-completed USS Massachusetts, BB-3 in 1/250 and the monitor HMS Erebus in 1/600. On the shelf are the Kate Corey, Bluenose and gunboat Arrow. On the reading table are the last three books of the Hornblower series and "Sea Fighter" by Cobb. Al Blevins -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "aa8." Subject: What's on the work bench and Graf spee Hello all On my workbench apart from loads of apparent junk I have three seemingly at times, endless projects. A Glencoe Oregon, An Airfix Repulse and an Airfix HMS victory. These three were sent to haunt me. In the wings waiting I have a Steel navy HMS Dreadnought and the Greek Cruiser Averof. As far as Oregon is concerned I followed the Rhino Bones method of deck modification. Rhino kindly E-mailed me photographs of what he did and I followed. I'm quite happy with the result many SMMLies have helped me with info and bits for this one so thank you all. Repulse has lain dormant for a year until last week when I did a bit to her. I'm using WEM brass and some resin on this and I'm very pleased with the results so far. Victory, what can I say apart from it's my wife's favourite ship and she wants a model of it. Also this very day arrived a Heller Graf Spee. Please can anyone point me in the direction of some reference material for her. Preferably available currently. All ideas welcome. Regards Andy Jones -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: rolie muise Subject: Haig Pinch/Dimple bottles Does any one know where I can get a few Haig whisky bottles. The three-sided ones with the sides pushed in that are used for ships in bottles. I have been asked to build an RCN steamer, HMCS Gatineau,(one of the later Cadillacs)in a bottle.. Haig whisky is not sold in Nova Scotia, so there are none to be had at the recyclers. If someone has any they want to get rid of. lets make a deal. rolie in Nova Scotia home of HMCS Sackville, the last corvette -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Ives100@aol.com Subject: Re: Paint separation >> Paints are a combination of pigments, carriers, retardants, things that hold the paint together (coagulants?/binders) and other fancy words that I can't remember (it's late, gimme a break). When you add thinner, turpentine, mineral spirits, etc, this balance is disturbed and the paint will separate over a few days/weeks depending on the amount of imbalance. << Actually, paints are a suspension of pigments and not a solution. The chemical difference? If you dissolve sugar or salt in water, the atoms are solvated and interact as small individual molecules with the solvent (in this case, water). Finely ground pepper in water, on the other hand, is a suspension. The paricles are very small, but are not solubilized by the solvent. The particles will, under the influence of gravity, settle (unless they are small enough to remain suspended by Brownian motion). This is an oversimplification, but it basically explains why the paint does separate and settle, thus needin stirring to resuspend (but not redissolve) the pigment. Tom Dougherty -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Fred Schwarz" Subject: On My Bench Hello: I am working on Tamiya's 1/700 scale Fletcher, using Tom Modelworks Etch set. Its my first ship in about 25 years! I'm also working on a 1/35 Japanese Type 90 tank with mine roller set. Next I plan to do the USS Indianapolis and a 1/35 M109A6 SP Howitzer. Fred -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: johnny chen Subject: More Falkland Frigates Questions Apologies for this is rather long post. I have no other access to printed materials, so this is my other recourse. Finally I completed my Type 42 HMS Coventry (D118). I had to build her instead of my original plan for an HMS Glasgow, since no one could confirm on the flag on top of the bridge. She's partially with PE, I was quite a tedious work to have the railings in. She's my fourth ship so far, so quality of my work is still beyond 'contest quality'. I completed her along with HMS Invincible (R05) complete with 8 SHAR and 4 Sea Kings. I'm now progressing to build two other frigates of the period, however I need again some confirmations. Type 22 WEM Kit (HMS Brazen F91) will be converted to either HMS Brilliant (F90) or HMS Broadsword (F88). This if my first resin kit, and I find the assemble rather more difficult compared to plastic. Some edges had to be 'steam' bent, and a lot of putty and sanding is required. However, this is the only one available. Question: 1. Is it correct that the funnel of Broadsword has more enlarged and pronouced somestacks versus that of Brilliant? My concurrent project is Type 21 Pitroad Kit (HMS Amazon). I will be building her as HMS Arrow F173 or HMS Alacrity F174, depending on what diorama should I make when these two ships will be almost done. Pitroad instructions are in Japanese, so I'm in on bit of hit-and-miss. Also, it was on post-refit configuration. (I had to scrape and sand the 'hull-strengthening' side strakes.) Question: 2. Does anyone have Falkland images of either or both. What I have is Alacrity returning to UK after the war. Her SCOT is already white, and she has a pennant number... 3. ... which leads to : were Alacrity's SCOT dome painted black during the war? Ardent had her BLACK. 4. ... and it seemed that Arrow has in fact NOT YET INSTALLED her SCOT domes. 5. And how about their pennant numbers? Seemed some had retained it during the campaign, but some had painted it out? Some enlightenment please. There are some images of Type 21 frigates (port-side view) without side pennant number, so ID is rather quite difficult. Please share to me your images. Thanks. But aside from that, I think everybody is right about keeping air away from the stored paint, and Rhinobones probably has the most practical suggestion. I will say I have kept Humbrol in its own tins for years without noticable deterioration other than some minor thickening. I haven't used Humbrol much for about 10 years, and from the comments on this List, I wonder if the paint is still the same. I am moving toward using only acrylics and am more and more impressed with the new (Floquil) Polyscale line. But, I am a brush painter only (gasp!), and I don't know how it airbrushes. It's just what it sounds like. You enter three completely different subjects and they are all judged by the same criteria as all the other models. They can still be entered in separate categories and are still eligible for awards in those categories as well. All you have to do is sign up for the Triathlon when you enter. Just a thought. Don't be too quick to lay down your money. As good as Skywave is, they make mistakes too. In the case of the Gearing model, the bow shear is so screwed up, it's almost impossible to fix. I was planning on doing the Fletcher in Measure 12 Mod but now I realize it didn't have the height finding radar in 1942. When did the Fletcher (if ever) have the height finding radar? I don't want to remove the small dish as I think it will destroy the direction radar, it looks too nice to mess up. What scheme should I paint my DD to be correct? if the Fletcher don't work for this, how about DD446, USS Radford? OK. Do any of you know anything about Skywave/Pit-Road doing a US pre war destroyer. I've heard something to the effect that they might be, but without being able to pin it down. << Skywave is working on a USN Benson/Gleaves class destroyer, with the USS Livermore DD-429 as the first release, hopefully this summer. I sent them drawings on every aspect of that class of ship and also for the Sims class, so lets hope they do a good job! I think they will. You may consider offering a hull, the PE sets, and misc castings as a set or individual items. I personally would build the hull, etc and buy the PE and fittings as req'd. I was going to make your life more complicated and ask for it in 1/100, but my HMS Chester in 1/96 is a good four feet long, so that battlecruiser would require a garage for construction. How long does it work out to be in 1/200? << John, I've been fiddling around with a 1/144th scale Goeben for over two years now. I was planning on using a swampworks hull, deck and props and building up the fittings package for it from there.
