I have not had much luck locating good references for the deck gun and antiaircraft weapons for the type VII-B either; any leads? Thanks in advance. Great issue by the way Victor B.!!! Dave E. Either watch the movie and enjoy it for it's entertainment value, or leave it well enough alone. You can't fight the corporate money making aspect of this thing, so let it go!!! Argue a battle worth fighting AND winning. Lets get back to ships and away from films. my two cents. Bob O'Connor -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "David Mullins" Subject: Tall Lady wanted Hi, All! I'm trying to locate a Monogram ~1/500 scale Albany class CG kit (preferrably the USS Chicago. The USS Albany or USS Columbus would do) located in the US or Canada. Thanks in advance. Now back to the 1/72 Ship Source List project. Thanks!!! To save money this show was filmed in Malta using leftover models and sets from "U-571." If you don't mind Squalus being depicted as a Type VII U-boat then you may enjoy the show. If you're a rivet counter you'll squirm in pain. Sam Neil stars. James Keach directed. wblad@msn.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: ECammeron@aol.com Subject: Re: Swordfish in US Markings Harold: No, I wasn't just taking issue with the author's statements on squadron assignments. It just happened to be the focal point - you wondered why the aircraft complement did not show Swordfish and I commented that the author had shown no documentation for his assignments. As an example, VC-39, which Terzibaschitsch had embarked on CVE-31, Prince William, on August 7, 1943, was disestablished August 15, 1943 and resestablished the same date as VF-39. I seriously doubt VC-39 ever served aboard any carrier, let alone CVE-31. See the book US Naval Aviation 1910-1970 for confirmation. There are many errors in the Terzibaschitsch books - radars, camouflage schemes, etc. You might want to check the Tailhook Association's reviews of his Aircraft Carrier and Escort Carrier books for additional comments. Incidentially, the website you mention on VC squadrons is for the modern Navy, not the VC squadrons of WW II. There are a totally different breed. Eugene -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Subject: I was wrong - again! Hi fellow smellies I stand corrected, it WAS The Battle of the River Plate. The trouble is it was on TV, and that's when I usually close my eyes. I have seen what remains of the Graf Spee off Montivideo, when I was aboard HMS Albion. We were due to visit Buenos Aires, on Tuesday 14th July 1959, but technically ran aground in the river Plate due to sucking up liquid mud (with little fish in) into our main condensers and cooling water systems. I know, I was just buttoning up the Fire and Bilge pump in "B" gear room. Wash through sea to sea was the idea. A mad rush and the main engines were shut down in about four minutes flat. It is supposed to be a gradual slow down to keep temperatures even and takes some hours. The only thing running on the ship was the diesel generators on their 'high' suction. This was kept up for about three days whilst all the cooling systems were cleaned out after we had been towed to deeper water. We then spent an extra 10 days in Rio. whilst our accompanying frigates had our runs ashore in B.A. The end of a 10 month round the world flag showing commission. Happy Days! Since I mentoned our Web Site, only yesterday. It has been updated yet again. This time more sample drawings are on display. (Even a preview of a drawing to be seen in the up and coming J,K and N class destroyer book). Holds shape very nicely. I had to make a series of bar guards for an UNREP station on my DDG, and I am happy with the result. Hope this helps. I have built Tamiya's 1/350 scale USS Enterprise CVN-65 carrier several times, but I am really hankering for a 1/350 scale Modern carrier. AM I hoping against hope here that I will see a 1/350 scale USS Harry S Truman CVN-75? Does anyone here know if something like this is either in the works at one of the major modeling companies or planned? If not a Nimitz class carrier, how about something from either the Forestall or Kitty Hawk class and I hope that if a company builds a kit like this, they take lesson from Tamiya's poor execution of the 'Big E' kit and spend more time on creating a more detailed kit. If anyone knows anything, please inform us all. Thanks a lot guys. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Minadmiral@aol.com Subject: Re: GLOIRE >> Do you REALLY want to paint the Gloire in that zebra scheme?!? I once suggested that to a listmember who had been zebra-painting a US PT-boat, and was told that I was "a very sick man." << Hi Guys; I have some nice pictures of WWI RN warships in zebra disruptive schemes (I believe HMS HINDUSTAN was one ). I guess when I paint my wargame models in their zebra schemes I will have to do GLOIRE as well. By the way - I'm referring to 1:6000 scale models. I've seen some 1:6000 camo painted ships at the Scale Specialties table at conventions. Unbelievable!!! Here's my two cents on that movie Pearl Harbor. Hollywood has found another way to make successful movies the formula is this. Simply take historically famous events in which ships or ship sink causes alot of deaths and the people in charge were complacent that tragegy couldn't happen as it turned out. Then make it historically accurate to the times such as clothes, speech, furniture, cars, hair styles, and to round it out have a love story. Yeah I'm going to see it. It's going to be interesting to see what color the battle line will be painted in. Will it be 5-D dark gray and be dark gray or dark blue because in '91 I visited the Arizona memorial and they a painting of the ship painted in a very close 5-N Navy Blue for measure 21. Even though the Arizona's scheme was measure 1. I wonder if people will walk out crying from the theaters as they did for Titanic. I wouldn't be surprised if the theme song goes to the top ten on the chart. And any model of the Arizona gets real popular. In conclusion that my 2 cents. Craig -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Craig R Bennett Subject: Stefan Terzibaschitsch Escort Carriers and Aviation Support ships of the US Navy I am looking for a copy of Stefan Terzibaschitsch Escort Carriers and Aviation Support ships of the US Navy and would pay up to $50.00 for a copy. The book's outside can be beat up but the contents must be clean, intact and complete. Craig -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: " Jim Mc" Subject: Origin of the Butch O'Hare story The story in question comes from Paul Harvey. Yeah, what a sap! How could he have written such drivel? It's a freakin wonder he has been telling stories of that kind for over 30 years. This list is getting really nit picky as of late, can anyone else say Star Trek convention? Jim McCormick -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: ZMzimmerman@cs.com Subject: H.M.S. Vanguard (Post WW II battleship) Having recently purchased the Hasegawa 1/450 Vanguard does anyone out there know of any photo references. I have both Beyers and Parks as a start. And has anyone ever done an article on what needs fixing and replacing, (yes I know quite a bit). Thank you, Michael Zimmerman -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: ZMzimmerman@cs.com Subject: Pearl Harbor movie While those among us who know better gnash our teeth over the historical and technical errors about this movie and just about every other one ever made, let us hope that it will spark a few students and teachers out in the audience to learn the real story. I for one will be seeing it Memorial Day. I read somewhere that this ship was built with an assymetric hull, in an effort to balance the weight of the island. I have a good print showing top and starboard side views, but these don't give me a clue on any assymetry of hull, below the flight deck. Following a suggestion from a friend, I e-mailed Floating Drydock. They have a 1/192 scale set of plans for $30. This is progress, except that I build in 1/1200 scale, and will have to visit a professional printing outfit here in San Antonio, to have that set of plans scaled down. That will probably cost me another $20 or so, so that I will have nearly $50 invested before I cut the first strip of basswood. Can anyone out there aim me at a less expensive solution? To get there, take the DC Beltway (I-495) to Silver Spring, and exit at Georgia Avenue SOUTH. Merge onto Georgia Avenue, continue south for less than a minute, pass the stop light at Seminary Place, continue straigh another hundred feet or so, then turn right at the second light (i.e. the next light) onto Seminary Road (do not be confused by the sign for Columbia Blvd; the right turn at the second light is indeed Seminary Road). Go down Seminary Road a minute or so, and continue straight onto Linden Lane when Seminary Road veers off to the left at the elementary school. Continue down Linden Lane a minute or so more until you get to the strip mall on the right, and pull into the parking lot there. Nostalgic Plastic is located at 2425 Linden Lane, and Nostalgic Plastic Automotive, where we will be meeting, is located at 2417 Linden Lane. If you find yourself going over an overpass and at the Walter Reade Army Medical Clinic Annex, you've gone too far by a few hundred feet. If you get lost, you can call the store at (301)565-0565, and they should be able to help you with directions. Hope to see you tomorrow!
