I recently bought an Airfix Queen Elizabeth. Considering I have a Mary in peacetime colours I thought I would do Elizabeth in warpaint. Can anyone give me basic instructions on colours, and placement of any AA weaponry? Did she have Bofors etc on board? Thanks in advance. Does anyone have suggestions as how to get rid of them with ease? I must say although I have done a few resin kits so far. I still found it difficult to combat this problem Modelkrak presented to me. Also, I have the "Takasago" by Modelkrak, but with my research I found the kit actually resembles "Yoshino" more than Takasago. Does anyone have any comment on this? The instruction sheet is practically useless on these Modelkrak kits. Sorry guys, I don't mean to sound like I'm bashing anyone. But it's so frustrating when I look at the instructions that come with the kits. I have bought 4 of them so far. Instructions are all worthless. Well, I hope I'm not starting a war here!! Any recommendation or comment is greatly appreciated!! However, I found a copy of Stillwell's book at borders.com for $36 (incl shipping) brand new. It came in Friday morning, and I'm finally seeing what everyone's been talking about. Derek Wakefield -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Derek Wakefield Subject: Missouri's Ms-32/22d Are the plans included with the Tamiya 1:350 Missouri for her Ms-32/22d scheme fairly accurate? I've gone back to work, am on a 8-10hr/7day schedule, and have crap for time. So I'm having to shelve my Revell Arizona project for the duration. Instead, I've yanked out a 1:1200 Revell Miniships Missouri. My sanity/sight simply isn't good enough to even think about trying to detail/accurize anything this small. The kit was given to me as a birthday present from a good friend, so... The molded on grossly oversized 20mm's grate on my nerves a bit, but the idea of scraping them off and fabbing replacements..I don't think so. Okay, maybe once I get started on it, I'll start wondering "how can I do this, and how can I improve this," (it's a disease, I swear, I can't build anything right out of the box anymore)... For kicks and grins though, I'm thinking about just cleaning it up a bit, putting it together, and painting it 32/22d in hopes the dazzle will hide some of the more inaccurate qualities. Hey, it's a ship model, and the project is one step shy of slap-dashing (which is about all I have time for right now). I'm just curious about how accurate the instructions for the Tamiya kit are. Derek Wakefield -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Susan Cowardin" Subject: Floating Drydock In reading Ken Groom's inquiry about Floating Drydock still being in business or not, I am having a similar experience with Pacific Front Hobbies; that is, I placed an order two months ago, received confirmation but no shipment. After one month I asked for the status of the order and was told it would be shipped the next day. That was over two weeks ago. Now I get no reply to my e-mails, just like Ken reported with his dealings. Is some crazed aero/tank-nut taking these guys out? I really like dealing with Bill Gruner. If they've hurt him, God help them. I wouldn't put it past them though. Why just the other day the local hobby shop's order came in, you got it, all tanks and airplanes. I asked if they would handle my Gold Medal order and their eyes just glazed over while they wandered toward the back of the store like cows looking for a better pasture. Seriously though, all this points to the true value of this forum. I was feeling fairly much alone till I read that Ken was having similar problems. I hate to send repeated requests for information but worse I wonder if everything is alright with people I like doing business with. I really hope they are just vacationing on a South Seas island ( perhaps even scuba diving in Truk lagoon ). Now for that reason, I can wait for my little order. While looking through the Jadar-Model site I noticed that they now offer the Spanish battleship Pelayo, circa 1887. Hi Kelvin.... Ray Bean here, the chap that built the 3 ship dio you were speaking of....that was a CVL in the center, a Fletcher to port, and a Pittsburgh on the starboard side, in heavy seas coming alongside for UNREP. While everything is open to interpretation, I based that dio on many WWII Pacific war photos where ships operating together at close quarters still had to refuel in heavy seas. The destroyers bows are really digging in--and many times taking it green right aft of A turret, the cruiser is rising up out of a wave swell and the carrier is riding the crests showing a fair bit of her hull bottom here and there as does the cruiser, but all their sterns are pretty much digging in to get as much headway against the 'wind', kicking up a froth at the fantails, if the dio was longer, the wake would dissipate quickly from the heavier sieas and not be visible, as it is shown, the dio ends right aft of the carrier. No two photos of ships in heavy seas are ever alike, and it depends muchly on their bow shapes, hull shapes and course or speed and then the prevailing winds. I have been at sea by the way, maybe not such rough ones, but all I can suggest is you try this.....its far harder than you think to create that effect and with each dio you learn, perhaps my next one will be more realistic, but judges at past local and regional contests thought these were awesome and that little dio has won many accolades. There are far more experienced and far better modellers out there than I, and I would encourage these good folks to wite in their articles,---'how-they-did-it--' pieces, submit these for publication and put themselves out there for the benefit of all. Prior to that article in PSM, no one else to my knowledge had done this before in a ship model publication....and it takes a lot of time effort and courage to produce an article like this, and others. I would invite anyone to take what I have written (now a few years ago), and improve upon it with good constructive criticsm and helpfull notes. The first thing you have to do, Kelvin, is do small easy little seascapes with one ship like we all do, and gradually progress and EXPERIMENT; that dio was a total experiment and fun to do and thats what this hobby is all about. Do some dios and post them or send them to PSM of MSJ..... Ray D. I am currently working on the WSW 1/700 Strasbourg and wanted to see if anyone could provide me with information about the floatplane provided with the kit. What colors/markings would be appropriate for this plane circa 1940? Also, yesterday I had straightened the barrels on the main turrets before assembly using the boiling water method, painted and affixed the turrets onto the hull. But, I noticed this morning that one of the barrels appears to have warped just a little (but noticable). I could have sworn they were all straight yesterday. Now, what would be the best way to straighten out this one errant barrel? I can't remove the turret from the hull and all the barrels are cast as one piece with the turret body (and I don't want to damage/warp the other three barrels in the process of fixing the fourth). Any recommendations welcome!
