Al Ross -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Erwin Van Deynze Subject: Re: Anatomy of the Ship >> AFAIK Hood is to come out soon, and I would imagine titles such a Yamato and Victory will be likely to be follow. << Yamato has already been reprinted, last year, (proud owner of a copy, thanks to Caroline who kept mine in backorder for over a year) so I'll guess it is still available. Regarding AOTS HMS Hood, I've read somewhere that it would be a smaller or shorter revised edition of the original and it would be released in the modelling section of Brassey's booklist. Erwin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Kerry L. Jang" Subject: YAMATO PLATING & I-19 SUBMARINE. QUESTIONS FOR IJN EXPERTS Gentlemen, I have two questions I hope someone can help me with. 1. Does anyone know of a plan or drawing that shows the run of the armour belts on the YAMATO? I don't suppose a shell expansion drawing exists, but if anyone knows of some cross sections that show the in-out pattern of the belts, pelase let me know. Skulski's book has a midship frame drawing where I can deduce the number of paltes and the in-out pattern, but I would like a few more datum points to plate my hull. 2. After 6 years on the shelf, I'm back to work on my Scale Shipyard 1:48 I-19 (after filing out all those limber holes I went crazy and shelved the project until I could recover). There are a few areas on the plans and drawings I have that have confused me: a) The Aft Crane Boom. The drawings I have conflict. Some show the recess for this crane to lie within the confines of the wood planked area (parallel to the wood palnked area). ----------------- <-- wood deck edge XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX <-- recess for crane Some show the crane recess that cuts across the wood deck edge at a shallow angle. X --- X--------- X X (OK, the angle is a bit steep here but you get the idea.....). My original thought was that plans showing this arrangements are showing in plan view the crane deployed and slightly swung over...?! b) The hangar on the I-19 is set into the deck and faired over with the conning tower. I have yet to find a photo or drawing shwoing which way the hangar door opens! On the I-400, the doors swing open to one side. I think the I-19 doors must open upwards, as there is no room to open to the side. Any thoughts? c) Flood port openings in the bottom of the hull. There are several large rectangular openings in the bottom hull. I imagine that there openings could be blocked off with doors? Anybody know? d) Anybody know of any clear drawings showing the weld lines on the sub's hull. I ask this as the Scale Shipyard guys told me ages ago that they had the most accrurate weld lines. Most of mine got sanded off wheil cleaning up the hull and I need to repalce them. Now, its not that I don't beleive the Scale Shipyard, but some details of their drawings don't match photos of the actual sub. In this case, the I-19 at different times in her career (see hangar fairings) Thanks for any help! Kerry Jang -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Erwin Van Deynze Subject: Some Samek questions Hi, On a visit to my hobbystore, the shopkeeper, who knows I'm also into ships, asked me to take a look at a kit from Samek (Prinz Eugen). He usually doesn't have ships in his line-up, specializing in armour and planes, but wants to take some ship kits in stock too. Anyway he asked me if I could comment on the quality, if it was worth the investment. To be honest, I hadn't seen a resin ship kit in the flesh before, but when he opened the box, I saw an absolute beauty ! Quality was so good, the casting so fine and bubble-free, I could only say it sure was a fine kit. Seeing it made me think twice to my aversion to 1/700 and the high prices of the resin kits, so I'm pretty much thinking of taking a go at the resin models. Now to my questions, is this an one-off from Samek, or is this quality consistent, secondly is there somewhere on the web an on-line catalogue of the range, and what is a good kit to start with resin? For the last I'll probably buy one of WEM's Flowers at this years IPMS UK Nationals, but from there on???? Erwin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: joe.sus@att.net Subject: Chicago naval stuff For those of you who are going to the IPMS convention in Chicago, here are some of the naval exhibits in or near town. Two of the subs are a day trip away, but if you're driving here anyway, they could be a side trip en route. USS Silversides, Muskegon, Michigan open 10AM to 5:30 PM Eastern time. USCGC McLane(W 146) and LST 393 are also there, as well as a small museum. website:www.silversides.org USS Cobia, Manitowoc, Wisconsin open 9AM to 6PM Central time. website:wimaritimemuseum.org U-505 Our local U boat is at the Museum of Science & Industry, at 57th St & the lake front. Open 9:30 to 5:30. There is a Navy exhibit and "Ships thru the Ages" in the museum. Besides the U-boat tour, the sub is also visible from the outside, along the SE side of the building. Admission is pricey: $9.00, plus $7.75 for underground parking. If you don't mind walking, just to the west is the U of Chicago neighborhood with cheap street parking, plus several used book stores (with some military-industrial complex content) within a mile along 57th st. At Meigs Field, (a small lake front airport around 12th St and Lake Shore Dr) there is a 1/48 model of one of the paddlewheel aircraft carriers in the terminal building lobby. Since both Chicago locations are at the lake front, it's best to get there as early as possible, from the traffic and parking standpoints. If there's any interest, we might be able to arrange a car pool to Meigs field and the U-boat. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: R C Marelius Subject: Re: Appropiate models for a 12 year old Last Christmas I gave my 10 year old nephew a Revell 1/720 Enterprise, and it seemed to go over well. He had expressed an interest in carriers to his mom, and she had helped him build a couple of simpler kits before, so that helped. With my help, we were able to knock it out in about 7-8 hours, which was about all he could stand. While it may be a little complex for a starter kit, the advantages of the Enterprise kit is that with 2 cans of spray paint (Testors, a light gray for the hull, island and airplanes; dark gray for the deck) it can be mostly assembled unpainted, then painted (outside, of course!) prior to putting on the deck, and it looks good for that level of workmanship. It can also be made waterline, with the lower hull left unglued and removable for those bedsheet battles. The main drawback seemed to be that the elevators dont have much bonding area if they aren't assembled flush with the deck, so they tend to break off easily during stormy UNREPs, and watch those loose aircraft in the carpet with your bare feet. Also, it is not a Tamiya shake the box kit, so some help is needed in parts clean up to ensure a reasonable fit. Overall, it seemed to be a hit - I ran into him and his parents a couple times on the Hornet during the SMMLCon last April, so something stuck there. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Richard Eaton" Subject: Mystery PT 815 Hey gang, Delurking here with a mystery. If this has been discussed before forgive me. I picked up a large box by Wasan Plastic Model Co of the 1/72 Japanese PT 815 for an extremely reasonable price today at the local shop. For the life of me it sure looks like the old Tamiya kit. Has anyone else seen this or heard if the molds changed hands? Interestingly the hull has a Trumpeter marking. The kit comes with motor installed and ready to go. The instructions and detail level sure look like Tamiya to me. If this is the Tamiya mold we have a real bargain on our hands as I paid $18.00 US retail for this kit. This after lusting after the Tamiya for all these years! Thanks, and Regards, Richard -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Masashi Ito Subject: Re: Great news from "Seals Models"??? >> To those of you who are not frequent visitors to Steelnavy.com let me relay a message posted there recently. A gentleman describing himself as a representative of Foresight Inc. (a producers of "Seals Models" series) has anounced that they will release 1/700 plastic injection model of "Izumo" of Tsushima fame. I do sicerely hope that it is not a hoax. << Thank you for the wonderful information! I am pretty much excited by it, and let us hope the company continues releasing more ships in the era! Well, if they have a computer with internet they could try Phoenix Model Company and look up Lindberg, Revell, Revell Germany. Or you try Polar Lights they have been reissuing the old Aurora Monster figures.I don't know if they live in a city or a rural area so the distance to hobby shop could be short or long. Or try ordering Squadron Mail Catalogue they sometimes have discounts. Craig -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: " Kjetil Lindahl" Subject: Rigging wire The best rigging material i have ever used is something i found in the raiload section of a hobby shop. It is piano wire 0,1 mm x 300 mm and is manufactured by a company called Haberl & Pabst in Germany. This stuff is hardened steel strong enough to support its own weight so you don`t have to tighten it, just cut to the right lenght and glue it in place. It produces very even and realistic sagging lines with no kinks and is very strong. But I am having trouble finding it here in Norway. Does anybody know any mail order supplier abroad who stock this stuff. We were delayed slightly by our computer crash of June 30th...... << Belay that - it should have read MAY 30th. What color were UK, German and Japanese destroyer decks in WW II? Before I got started, I heard wind of Skywave's pending release of said cruiser, and now having just recently received and started the excellent Skywave Maya, I no longer have any need of the Aoshima kit. I know that it is far inferior to the Skywave kit, so am only asking for $5 plus shipping. It is complete and unstarted, with all the sprues intact. Could be perfect for sparking an interest in ship models in a younger person... It is a Russian destroyer named "Courageous", and appears to be a post-WW 2 version of the old WW2 Soviet Plan 7 destroyers, sometimes referred to as Gnevnyi class. These may have been used by the Soviets and Chinese from the late 1940s through possibly the 1960s. It has the all gun and torpedo armament, and somewhat modified postwar bridge structure. It is a very nice model, even better than Trumpeter's last 1/200 releases. They are rapidly approaching Tamiya quality, and the price, at $22.00, is a real bargain. No word yet on the Chinese 'Brand X' 1/350 Arizona...we are told mid to late July. I have a few 1/700 scale Dragon/DML 7019 Charles F Adams we recently found...$18.00.
