You'd think that if someone was going to plagiarize it they'd at least change the name, say to Despatch #8! << Actually, there really was a Despatch #8-- it was a 96' wood hulled tug, also based in the bay area. I understand that the Sirmar set is less extensive (and less costly) than those fabulous-looking Parkins sets. I tried Pacific Front, WEM, Floating Drydock and The Dromedary, and none of them list the Sirmar 1/72 fittings.... I'm going to be building my Corvette as an RC model, and I'm also afraid the Parkins sets will introduce too much topside weight. I'd like something better than stock kit parts, especially for the bridge area and the weapons, and I'd like to see what the Sirmar set includes. TIA! I can then scale mine out correctly. On a related topic, does anybody have a photo or drawing showing how the wings folded on the OS2U Kingfisher, float equipped version? Cheers Rob -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "chenyangzhang" Subject: Kelly Hi Einar If you want to model the Kelly as sunk you'll need to either track down a Matchbox kit and add Oerlikon platforms or modify the White Ensign kit by adding the 4 inch HA gun and Oerlikons. The WEM kit represents Kelly from completion until 9th May 1940. Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Jim Warsher Subject: RN WW2 1/700 decals Anyone have any advice regarding decals for RN WW2 ships in 1/700? I've got four projects waiting but can't see spending the time creating a detailed models if there's no prospect of finishing them properly. Thanks in advance for any suggestions/tips/hints/advice. Jim -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "R N Pearson" Subject: Re: Wet Queen and RCN gunshield artwork >>> Is this some sort of bad New Zealander joke? <<< >> You should see the cartoon she had on her forward gun house: a "Wet-ass" Queen fallen in a puddle... << Which brings us back to my original post on 'Wet Ass Queen"... I have done up the artwork for Wetaskiwin's and other RCN Flower's gunshield artwork (cartoon. . . harrumph). All of these will be offered as ALPS decals for the Revell Flower as soon as I get the proper scsi connector - why is it you can have a dozen of them, but never the one you need, and all the shops have to special order them - to get it added to my scsi chain. Those I have prepared so far are - Arvida (burly sailor holding a u-boat) - Drumheller (devil drumming) - Shawinigan (golden female harp) - Shediac (cat reaching into a goldfish bowl to get the U-Fish) - Snowberry (Donald Duck on a cloud holding a depth charge) - Wetaskiwin (Queen on her backside in a puddle) The first five can be seen at the URL below, while I am still looking for a photo of Wetaskiwin with lengthened focsle so I can do an illustration of her. Other interesting gunshield artwork includes: Atholl - butt view of a dragon (thpeak the name with a lithp) Baddeck - five aces Orillia - a gorilla holding a DC over its head Mayflower - Daisy Mae from L'il Abner Moose Jaw - a snorting moose chasing Hitler Regards, Bob Pearson View my corvette illustrations at http://members.nbci.com/profileart/non-av/index.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Marc Flake Subject: Revell's S-Boat For those who are interested, Squadron has the Revell S-Boat available as a pre-order for a little less than $17. For a peak of the box top go to: http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=rm5028 Marc -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Chris Drage" Subject: David Parkins GLS parts Hi All, Having read on the list that the only parts of the Revell Flower used with the DP detailing sets are: >> ....all you use of the kit is the hull, rudder and stack (and that is wrapped with a photo etch piece)." << This is only partly true. Naturally it depends on which of the super detailing kits you purchase! I purchased the lot!!! Yes, the kit box is now a hundred times heavier and wallet a hundred time lighter...... and is it worth it? Take it from me these sets are SUPER detailed! I am even taking the plunge and getting a temperature controlled soldering iron, the right flux and solder to do the job 'properly' (wish me luck). Even with ALL the DP kits you are still required to use a lot more of the original Revell parts than outlined the above. For example, the whole 'internal' structure of the bridge is used with the DP bridge kit. There are numerous small parts from the kit used here and there also. To anyone who wants the ultimate ship kit - go for it! I did one up as HMCS BONAVENTURE and am looking for another hull replacement. RD Bean, Canada. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Chris Preston" Subject: Re: HMCS WETASKIWIN Hi Everyone, After seeing the "quip" about a bad New Zealand joke, I just had to respond, but couldn't think of an appropriately funny response, so......Actually, it originated north of the 49th Parallel, in the province of Alberta, and about 70 km south of Edmonton. The corvette HMCS WETASKIWIN was named after the town of Wetaskiwin, Alberta, and was commissioned into the RCN on 17 DEC., 1940, in Esquimalt, B.C. Soon after, she became the "Wet Ass Queen". Her "Gun-shield Graffiti" shows an angry young lady, wearing a crown and holding a Scepter (?), and sitting in a puddle, with a wet a--! Hence the nickname "Wet Ass Queen", which was probably much easier to pronounce, after sinking a few pints during a good "run ashore". So, it's a Canuk joke, and not from the South Pacific. To change the subject just a little, but still on the Corvette theme, Bob Pearson was asking about a photo of the WETASKIWIN, with a long foc's'le. There is a photo of the port side of her on P.88, of "The Ships of Canada's Naval Forces 1910-1981" by Ken Macpherson and John Burgess. The photo is after her refit from Dec. 1943, to March 1944, during which she received her foc's'le extension, and shows her in what looks like a two or three-tone colour scheme with a white hull, and light blue, grey, or blue and green panels. She also has had her gun-shield graffiti replaced with a set of rocket rails, ands has a green (?) Maple Leaf on the funnel. I know Trumpeter from China has produced a lot, but I don't know what Banner has done. Thanks, Art Nicholson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Sanartjam@aol.com Subject: Re: HP French Cruiser Kits Hi SMML, Has anyone seen the HP Models kits of the French cruisers of the La Galissoniere class? I have seen a listing for the name ship and for Jean de Vienne, Montcalm, Gloire, and Georges Leygues. The WSW kit of the Georges Leygues is excellent but it represents the ship not as built or as in 1943 but in 1945-46, and I also like these ships as built. Thanks, Art Nicholson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Poore, Devin" Subject: Boat Questions Anyone know if the USS Juneau (CL-52) was carrying boats in her mid-ships area (the area just forward of the boat crane and aft of the forward stack) during November of '42? From photos I can only discern the two on either side hoisted from the davits. I 'believe' that there were no boats there, but can't confirm. Thanks, Devin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Zeljko Hanich Subject: Tamiya DD445 Fletcher for sale $15.00 Hi, I am selling several kits of DD445 Fletcher (Tamiya 1/350 , kit 78012). All kits are brand new, inner plastic begs are sealed and boxes are in mint condition. I ask $15.00 for each (or the same value in other currency) + postage cost. Please, contact me directly to my address: hanich@zg.tel.hr Thanks, Zeljko -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Randy Short Subject: Books and Credit cards In late July or early August we will have Alan Raven's third volume of Royal Navy Camouflage at the usual $16. August should see Classic Warships Benson/Gleaves book and the Witchita book. Check the website for info updates. And lastly I found a reliable source for some excellent paint jars. They are 2oz and will keep Humbrol paints from drying out. This is the only jar that I've ever found that will keep Humbrols intact. The size is very handy too, with no shoulders, but straight sides. My test bottles have had Humbrols in them for 4 years now, and I haven't lost a drop of solvent from evaporating out. We will retail these jars as well as sell them to our dealers.
