[...] Questions - mini review of this kit from anybody who has built it? << I have said kit, built as San Jacinto CG56. It certainly looks like a VLS Ticonderoga, sitting on my mantel. I haven't checked my references for precise accuracy, that's not why I build. It would certainly be easier to build than resin for a first-timer. (I've done many resin add-ons, and have several BWN unbuilt kits...) I have the Gold Medal Models PE set for it, purchased after I finished, and at some point plan to retrofit most of it. Although 1/350 is a scale which crys out for PE, I'm not sure I'd recommend it for a first-time kit builder. Your mileage may vary. I'd recommend one of the basic ship modeling books to go with, e.g. the Mike Ashey one I have and somebody else's that came out recently. (?). I learned some things, and found other habits I do not wish to acquire. :-) Hope this helps. (striving to avoid TLAs, oops) Fido (Or possibly Allan Plumb, but how could you tell? As I recall, the ship was at anchor when a storm came up, caused the ship to drag anchor, and drove it into the bridge. That was a great discussion item in 1972 when I was attending Destroyer School in Newport. Thanks, Lou -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Ron Schmitt" Subject: Re. An open letter to Bob Steinbrunn I came back from my weekly Mah Jong club to find my little boy Ronnie curled up on the floor in a fetal position with his thumb in his mouth muttering over and over again "I'm not worthy" and strange words like "Bofors" and "Rafts with provisions" Then I saw the open issue of FSM and I began to understand. I bought Ron a Martin guitar but he never sounded like Chet Atkins. I bought him a Mustang but he never drove like Carrol Shelby. He just started on a Commanders "Salt Lake City" and was running around with his fist pumping and saying "YESSS, I did it-I fit the barrels to the gun houses!!" what ever that meant. I guess his third grade teacher was correct in her assesment when she wrote in his report card these fateful words. HIGH POTENTIAL-LOW ACHEIVEMENT. Bob, your mother must be very proud of you. I have to go now, Ronnie is banging his head against the wall and I have to go and try to expain that sometimes life is just not fair. Maybe if I tell him how nice the fingerpainting on his "San Francisco" looks he will cheer up. Ned -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Loren Perry Subject: Re: Renwal George Washington SSBN pin-up >> It is absolutely true. Wasn't much to look at, but it was there. It was raised line relief on the bulkhead, as I recall it was in the mess area. Oh how I wish I still had that model. Between the pin-up and the double bulkheads separating the reactor compartment, this must be one of the rarest kits today. << The engraved pin-ups were actually located on the aft side of the lowermost crew's quarters' forward bulkhead, near the bottom of the ship. One had to get down low and look up and forward to see them, but they were there. These pin-ups appeared only on the original issue of the USS George Washington (SSBN-598.) There were three images in all: a full-length reclining female nude, a frontal view of a nude female torso, and a full portrait of a woman's face. All were basic outlines measuring about 1/8 inch on a side, surrounded by rectangular frames and were barely visible unless one knew where to look and the lighting was at the right angle. I spotted them back in the 1970's when I assembled one for a Navy Recruiting exhibit in Orlando, Florida. As I was cleaning up flash and other molding flaws, I noticed the faint engraved lines and prepared to sand them off until I realized that the lines displayed a definite pattern. A magnifying glass revealed the awful truth - Renwal toolmakers were leading our young sons astray with soft-core porn engineered right into their kits! Evidently, someone higher up in the Renwal chain of command felt that way because a few years later, the kit was re-released with the crew's bulkhead showing signs of a crude cover-up; a sharp tool had been used to obliterate the pin-ups and a series of random pinpricks now adorned that part. I couldn't let the Renwal efforts go unrecognized, so I carefully painted the three pictures on my model in full color. BTW, some other engraved Renwal surprises in that amazing kit included detailed binding on the covers of books in the ship's bookshelves, toilet paper hanging from rolls in the crew's head, slabs of meat hanging in the galley freezer, and a reasonably accurate representation of the INSIDE of the nuclear reactor vessel. A most educational model kit. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: "Michael Petersen" Subject: D&S Enterprise If anyone knows of anyplace selling the reprint, I'd like to get one. The reason for the separation of the Coast Guard from the rest of the military lies in its law enforcement duties. The US Constitution forbids the Army or Navy from enforcing civilian law except in times of national emergency or war. Since the Coast Guard it the primary agent of maritime law enforcement in US territorial (and in certain cases extra-territorial) waters it can not be part of the DoD. When first formed it was part of the Department of the Treasury since one of its main components was the former Revenue Cutter Service. In 1967 it became part of the Department of Transportation which had just been created. I appreciate it very much. From the pictures of subchasers I've seen so far it looks like there has been quite a diversity when comes to their appearances. I've noticed different armament arrangements, boat and life rafts stored in different places, with radar or without, with ASW projectiles or without, different number or depth charges and diverse lay-outs of the ammo boxes around the aft 20mm gun platform. And especially those SC's converted into a gun boats (PGM) look very interesting indeed. Little boats with a lot of attitude.:) I would really like to cover a lot of them so people can see how they differ among themselves. I hope I can find enough sources and spare time to accomplish this task. Keith, I hope the model of KIDD didn't really have that effect on you, but thanks for the kind words. Don't be in awe of my talent, though, it's more the time invested in the model than talent. Besides, I'm in awe of so many other modelers. Yep, I have my heroes, too: Al Ross II (could I sit down and design a BlueJacket kit of an 80' ELCO PT boat or the CVE GAMBIER BAY? Don't think so..), Loren Perry, Don Preul, many folks whom I met at the Nautical Research Guild converence in Hampton, Virginia, Gary Kingzett (whose gigantic paws almost crushed my right hand in a vice-like grip), Steve Wiper (what a nice series of monographs!), the good folks who publish PSM, FSM, Model Ship Journal, the Nautical Research Journal, Seaway's Ships in Scale, SteelNavy.com, Modelwarships.com, SMML, and so on. It's a very nice community, model ship building, and I really haven't met anyone I haven't found to be likable and helpful. So, all of you reading this can just pat your own selves on the back. I laughed over Ned Barnett's and Bradford Chaucer's replies and appreciate the sentiments (Bob Steinbrunn "Memorial" issue of FineScale Modeler, indeed!), but there are so many other modelers out there who are very talented who deserve your attention more. Enough already! (grin) Besides, as Kerry Jang knows, what I'm MOST proud of are my two special girls we went to China for. Our first (Margaret) was nine months old when we brought her home just after I started building KIDD. Our second (Olivia) was 28 months old when she came home with us just as I was trying desperately to finish the model up. Somehow the model seemed less important than providing love, home, education, and perhaps most importantly, enough food. These are "needs", models are just "wants". And if you think *I'm* a proud daddy, you should see a photo of Kerry's daughter, Rachael Jang! And some of you do aircraft as well as ships so maybe someone here knows. The recent discussion of the GEORGE WASHINGTON sub model reminds me of another model kit that made the news. When (one of) the first F-117 Stealth Fighter kits was released someone supposedly asked at a Pentagon briefing if the kit was acurate. Someone, supposedly the Sec.Defence, was said to answer something like the following. "The Stealth Fighter doesn't exist, and it doesn't look like that, either". Attached below is a reply I received from the Radar Officer of VFN-101 regarding the trailer. Hope this helps. Steve Pelham, NH >> Dear Steve, Your question about a radar maintenance trailer or van on the flight deck of the Enterprise in the '45 era may be referring to a small gas-driven electric generator that was used on the flight and hanger decks to power the F6F radar system for maintenance and preflight checks. We called them "PutPuts" from the sound they generated. In the time we spent off Iwo Jima and Okinawa our carrier skipper was very conscious of the fire hazard the hot running putputs might cause while degassing aircraft if hit by a kamikaze, so he ordered our shutdown of maintenance while defueling aircraft. This somewhat slowed a very hardworking radar maintenance crew and affected our great radar readiness numbers. In hindsight, it was a great decision I believe, when I saw what happened to the USS Franklin and Bunker Hill - devastated with burning aircraft. I don't recall any specific details of the output of the putputs, but they were a great way to service the AN/APS-6 night fighter radars. Arnie, you might supply more specific detail.
