I HAVE BUILT A NUMBER OF MODEL CARS (PLEASE FORGIVE ME FOR THAT), ON WHICH I USED TESTOR'S PAINT AND GLOSS COAT. DEFINITELY SOME YELLOWING OCCURED. DULL-COAT ON MY SHIP AND AIRCRAFT (OOPS) HAS NEVER YELLOWED. DAVID IN DIXIE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Doug Wilde" Subject: French torpedo boats In a previous volume a correspondent asked about French torpedo boats. I've found a 1907 paper that was presented at The Congress of Naval Architecture held in Bordeaux, France, June 25, 26, and 27, 1907. Proceedings from that Congress may be fruitful. Please let us know. The paper in question was "The Subsurface Torped-Boat" by W. I. Babcock. This design actually is a proto-SWATH, but instead of being barbell in cross-section, more like an over/under shotgun. Engines and forward firing torpedo tube are in the lower hull, the crew completely abandoning the surface hull during combat. A huge table in the paper "Torpedo-Boat Design", 1897, includes a number of French TBs. I list them below by name/number, date of construction, and builder. Perhaps this will aid your search for information. Aluminum (second class), 1894, Yarrow & Co. No. 126, 127, and 128, 1890, Normand. No. 149, 1892, Normand. Sunderland, 1890, Doxford & Sons. Aquilon, 1895, Normand. Ariel, 1895, Normand. Filibustier, 1894, Doxford & Sons. Lancier, 1893, Normand. Eclair, Orage, and Kabyle, 1892, Forges et Chantier de la Mediterranee, La Seyne. Chevalier, 1894, Normand. Forban, 1894, Normand. Mousquetaire, 1893, Forges et Chantier de la Mediteranee, Le Havre. Good luck. Consult a Walthers catalog (HO). I do not know if all types are available, the sheet I have is for Clapboard but I know there are others available. The only ship out of about 50 that ever yellowed was in the sun at the local IPMS show for several hours, I suspect that is what caused the colour shift. Keep your models out of sunlight, direct or otherwise! As far as adding a few drops of blue to dullcote in order to cancel out the yellow, this works perfectly in photography, where blue is the complimentary colour of yellow when printing colour prints. Adding blue to dullcoat and going back over any kits that have gone yellow should take it out. However, I've never tried this and it would take some trial and error to get the amount of blue correct..... Rob -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: John Maze Subject: Re: 1/100 Sea King >> Tamiya did the 1/100 Sea King a long while ago, it hasn't been seen in NA for many years. Revell Germany did some as well at a later date, and again they are long gone. However, recently I was in Buffalo and came across a couple that were from Japan in the black and white Tamiya boxes with YEN price tags. It seems that they are still available in Japan... << I checked HLJ and Rainbow Ten, and they don't even list them, which makes me doubt they are, or recently have been, available in Japan. Though, it might not hurt to send an inquiry to HLJ (Hobby Link Japan). JohnM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: WRPRESSINC@aol.com Subject: Re: RN Destroyer Pendant Numbers Around the late nineteen sixties there was a person who tried to compile a complete list of pendant numbers for RN destroyers up to the end of WW One. I have forgotten his name and he is probably dead by now, however after several years of effort he gave up after having compiled a substantial but incomplete list. I seem to remember seeing his work over a period of time, but I had only a small interest in it. Where the list is now I have no idea. One of the problems that he faced was the lack of official lists of numbers, coupled with the fact that in World War One, the older destroyers sometimes had up to three different numbers. I was forced to listen on a couple of occasions to his difficulties in researching this subject. About this period or soon after, I came across a file in the Public Record Office that gave a listing of some of the destroyers along with Pendant Numbers. I think that this file was dated about 1916. The file itself was tied up in a bundle with many other files, and the title listed in the index was the file that was on the top of the pile. The other files in the bundle in several cases had no relation to the listed one, which means that anybody looking for Pendant Numbers in the index would never find the file in question except by accident. God bless civil servants. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: PSM-25 is in the mail! >> Plastic Ship Modeler is still the only magazine in the world devoted exclusively to static models of powered ships, both warships and commercial vessels. It will be called the Enterprise Hangar, after the WWII carrier, and will primarily be about Naval aviation in the Second World War. I'm stuck, though, trying to find M-60 machineguns in this scale. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I thought I'd look for a UH-1 "Huey" helicopter model, as they used them as door guns, but haven't been able to find any kits with M-60s. Please, Please, Please, someone let me know where I can find these!!! Today the Ft.Worth IPMS modelers had their SuperCon contest. Mark Flake won a gold medal in 1/700 class with a very nice High Molds USS Maryland. Oh how i wish I could do 700 scale cage masts like that. I was also pleased to hand him a number of medals for his fine WWI aircraft. Great work Mark! The boys did well too. Not to be out done, Ed Grune swept the 1/350 catagory. The two judges with me were blown away by Ed's PT 109 (White Ensign)We gave it the gold. The closer you look the more you see. Ed's Silver medal was for his USS Alkabuka (sp?) fleet tug. Fine work. The bronze medal was for Eds colorful Brooklayn Tug. The Banner/Trumpeter Arizona kits were very popular sellers today, (I got mine!) nine out of ten for sale at the show were snaped up early. Maybe we can see a few at next years show. On to Austin in a few weeks, Goodnight all, C.W.
