Can anyone help? Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Teliczan Tom Civ 15 SVS/SVF Subject: M-60s in 1/72 To Matthew Prager - Yes, the Hueys did have M-60s for door guns; early on they were "strapped" & later pedestal-mounted. Am not sure, but i believe the early Hasegawa UH-60, AF Rescue version, had a couple of troopers & a '60 or two included. Contact me off-line & will check & see if i still have same for you hidden away in closet. Later, Tomt -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Leslie Brown" Subject: Re: HMS Albion There were some 1:600 scale plans of HMS Albion as a Commando Carrier published in Military Modelling magazine back in the 1970's. These are not very detailed but do include some approximate hull lines so could be useful as a start. Contact me off line if you would like a photocopy. Regards Les Brown -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Robert Lockie" Subject: Bookshops in Oxford The following was sent to me by Nick Balmer a while ago, and I actually got the opportunity to visit it a few months ago. From London, take the A40 junction to Oxford from the M40 (I think it is Junction 8). Stay on that road and the Headington roundabout is (as I recall) the first one you reach. There was a reasonable collection of books (although not a lot of naval stuff) but also a stock of model railway and other modelling bits like paint and Evergreen styrene.. Nick also mentioned a shop called Blackwells in the centre of Oxford, but the city centre is now even more traffic-unfriendly than it was in 1994 (last time I drove into it). Unfortunately I do not have any information on model shops but you may find something to amuse you in the book emporia. I think it is called "Motorbooks". It is on the Headington Roundabout where the A40 hits the Oxford Ring Road, as you approach Oxford from the south you come up past the park and ride on your left. Then you get a set of traffic lights. About 500 yards afterwards, as you reach the roundabout on the ring road, you see on the left a 1930s black and white "half timbered" building which contains a MacDonalds. This has a turn to the left into a concrete slip road which runs into a side round with an arcade of shops. The slip road follows the outline of the roundabout. The last shop is Motorbooks. Park with one set of wheels on the verge like everybody else. When you have finished, if you follow the slip road around past the roundabout as it heads south west along the ring road, and you can turn back onto the Ring road at the traffic lights either way so that you can easily get back onto the A40 at the Headington Roundabout. A note to the readers of this site: From time to time there is strong discussion about having kits which represent the Washington Treaty "never builts." I can only remind you that Mr. Bartel had in the past produced such kits. If Mike gets back into modelling those ships, I would ask that you all cast you vote with your purchases. This can only HELP the shipmodelling craft. No, I don't derive financial gain from touting Mr. Bartel's products. But even if I did, the value of Mr. Bartel's products stand without need for any endorsement. Respectfully, MJBurmaster -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Doug Wilde" Subject: Re: JN PT Boats Dave, Is the NavIntel on that CD-ROM (on Japanese PT boats) the NavTech MisJapan reports. While trying to find copies of the NavTech MisEu reports I discovered the Navy produced a similar series on Japanese naval technology. Apparently a microfilmed version is available. I wonder if the CD you purchased contains the same material? What is the quality of the images and/or drawings? Was the text simply scanned? Are you sure about the URL you provided? I tried it and ran into the Great Wall of Chinese. The "English" page was unavailable. I thought it was important to let people know that Model Ship Journal, of which I am a contributor, has coverage of not only the static scale ship model market and industry, but due to Victor Baca's passion for RC scale warships, that is also included in his publication. I have offered to contribute not only book, video, and kit reviews, but also small pictorial articles with the best photo coverage I can possibly muster, covering historic warships of all nationalities. I am glad to hear that you are now improving the photographic reproduction quality in your own publication and look forward to viewing your latest efforts. As I stated in my previous post, there is always something good about a little competition. It makes all pay a little more attention to the details. It is healthy for all of us, and our customers are the true benefactors. The Arizona arrived today, in good condition (thanks AAA Hobbies). I've already talked to Tom Dougherty about his new Arizona brass - but I'm wondering what else is out there to add further to a kit that needs some help. Anybody got more brass, resin, etc., for this ship in 1/350? I've heard rumors about WEM Kingfishers? How about the "Old Battleship" brass set? Finally, is there anything out there that would turn the Arizona (in 1941 trim) into a the Pennsylvania in her late-war configuration? I'm not rich, but I'd enjoy doing this one right. Any of you out there got something you'd like to sell me? Come on Seattle, organise a car pool or two and join us up in the great white north (you'll be home by midnight!)....Anyone interested, please send me an email.... regards Boatbldr -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "WEM" Subject: FOTS and musical things Hi John >> There was some talk of an informal get-together during the day on Friday at FOTS. Any further news on that front. I presume everyone might get thirsty around lunchtime << ....especially you! >> so it might be nice to have a communal quench. << OK I am going to take the lead in this. We will all meet on Friday, at 1.30 outside the entrance to HMS WARRIOR (right by the main gate).. make sure you get yourself a guide.. this makes a wonderful souvenir and it includes extensive mapping through the naval base, indicating the bus routes inside the base, as well as a programme of events for each day, so no excuse for not finding Warrior! We will wait for folks until 1.45 (don't be shy now!) and then head for the nearest "pub" that they set up in the old stores for a drop of good stuff (Victory Ale.... if I remember, it was about 7%... yum!!!!) I'm sure we can find some of that fizzy lager stuff for Mike Dunn ;^)) John Snyder, at least, will be wearing his SMMLlie shirt, so we should be an easily seen.. and heard.. bunch of reprobates! >> the way C $ J I will not be bringing any guitars so I hope you have a spare. << Well... I have a steel strung acoustic, a classical, as well as a semi-acoustic and electric bass.. John has the "Big" Martin and "Little" Martin (my fave!), both six strings, together with a 12 string. However, JB has a folk guitar to spare, and between John and I, we have an assortment of harmonicas, whistles, dulcimers, and a violin... oh, and a bowed psaltery and mandolin!! Just let us know what you prefer to twiddle on. >> I'll be the one wearing the kilt with nothing worn under it. << .. and I'm not going there!!!! We are hosting an online build of the Tamiya 1/350 Bismarck using the Gold Medal Models detail set. The plan is to have a new installment every week or so until the project is complete. The address is: http://www.rollmodels.net/reviews/Bismarck/overview.htm Thank you very much, Brent http://www.rollmodels.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Victor M. Baca" Subject: Re: PSM-25 is in the mail >> Model Ship Journal covers working models (starting in issue "zero" ) as well as static models << I'd much rather be talking about ships, but here's some clarification for SMMLies who may not be familiar with Model Ship Journal. We cover primarily static models (heavy into warships) and include research material such as plans and prototype photo features. These are always geared to existing kits and hulls or contain enough info to allow the modeler to scratchbuild a small scale model from our pages. Model Ship Journal covers radio control models only if they could compete toe-to-toe with a static scale model given the same subject. Our coverage is primarily aimed at reasonably equal amounts of plastic (styrene kits), resin and scratchbuilt replicas of powered vessels. By powered vessel I emphasize that we cover only those ships not propelled by sail alone. Anything with sails would need a screw or paddlewheel before we would consider placing it in our pages. Basically, Model Ship Journal reflects it's readership and their wants/needs. Our primary subscribers are you guys who participate in SMML and that is the course I've steered the magazine toward as it's evolved. We also have a healthy number of readers who are closet tugboat and working ship (Coast Guard, freighters, auxiliary ships etc.) enthusiasts when they need a break from navy gray. Finally, I'm a seasoned maritime photographer as well as a ship modeler and strive to make the images in MSJ as crystal clear and pleasingly sharp as my capabilities will allow. I do not compete with any other magazine per se as Ships In Scale and Plastic Ship Modeler are doing their part to benefit the ship modeler. My main competition is myself and that last issue, which always sits on my desk reminding me that, next time, it'll be even better. May your models gather no dust, Victor M.
