Any of you out there got something you'd like to sell me? << In my article I just wrote and sent in to Model Ship Journal, I have mentioned a few options open to the readers/model builders. After a conversation with Tom Harrison of Tom's Modelworks, I put in this pending article mention of the fact that TMW will offer several update kits in the very near future. Also in this article, I show an image of the Gold Medal Model's excellent new set of photo etch for this kit. This set also includes many parts for a conversion to the 1942 Pennsylvania. We should all see some great products from both manufacturers. This article will be in the next Model Ship Journal, Vol. 2, No. 3, due out real soon. For more info on MSJ, see their web site @ www.modelshipjournal.com Thanks, Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "John W. Wressell" Subject: USS Brooklyn As I recall a new resin model of the USS Brooklyn was coming out this year. Does anyone recall who is making it and where it will be sold? Thanks, John Wressell -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "larsenal" Subject: Marines Edition Dear Chris, The book you refer to is out of print now. I'll try to have a look at the Museum bookstore that is well stocked ( too much ? ), and from wich I found another OOP Marines edition book. I've already talked to Tom Dougherty about his new Arizona brass - but I'm wondering what else is out there to add further to a kit that needs some help. Anybody got more brass, resin, etc., for this ship in 1/350? I've heard rumors about WEM Kingfishers? How about the "Old Battleship" brass set? Finally, is there anything out there that would turn the Arizona (in 1941 trim) into a the Pennsylvania in her late-war configuration? << I usually lurk and learn but, it seems to me the first we heard about the Banner Arizona was from Loren Perry who had been approached by the manufacturer (at that time, unknown as Loren had been sworn to secrecy?) and was about to produce a PE set to make at least two versions (1941 and 1930's) and, I think, also to produce the Pennsylvania. We haven't heard any more from Loren since people started reporting that they had bought the kit - don't know if he went ahead or the project fell through. I am waiting until the furor settles to decide if I will buy this kit but on some other kit subjects, I know that Loren and Tom seem to almost complement each other and it is can worth while to get both PE sets. Yes, carronades are to be found with the Royal Cypher cast on the upper part of the barrel, but not always. The most certain way of knowing whether a gun/carronade saw RN service was the presence of the 'broad arrow' mark and a register number and the individual weight of the piece all chiselled into the surface. There are 68 Pdr 95 Cwt guns in Australia which have been cast without the cypher, but these are very late castings (1860/1861). A large number of carronades were used by merchant shipping and bought directly from foundries and would not have any markings except for the makers name, makers serial number, year of casting, and size of the piece (e.g. 12 P for 12 pounder). If there was a way to convert this kit to a 1941 or a late war Pennsy, it would be worth buying anohter kit and having a side by side. I AM ABOUT TO EMBARK ON TEACHING MY SIX YEAR OLD GRANDSON TO BUILD KITS. HOW DOES ONE FORTIFY ONESELF FOR THIS VENTURE? I've already talked to Tom Dougherty about his new Arizona brass << I assume you mean Tom Harrison of Tom's Model works >> - but I'm wondering what else is out there << There are presently 2 sets of Brass, Tom's new set which I will be reviewing for the SteelNavy site in a few days and the GMM set which I reviewed earlier for SteelNavy. >> to add further to a kit that needs some help. Anybody got more brass, resin, etc., for this ship in 1/350? << Those two are specific for the Banner/Trumpeter kit. The other 1/350 battleship sets are generic and may have useful parts but no guarantee And more importantly no real savings You will need one or the other of the Tom's ($20) or GMM set ($40) and perhaps a set of watertight doors and hatches. A set of WEM kingfishers would also help as the kit planes are misshapen. >> How about the "Old Battleship" brass set? << Wrong scale if you are talking about the GMM set for the Revell kit. Tom does sell the brass from his 1941 resin Arizona kit separately but there is no guarantee that it will work exactly with the Banner kit, beside it doesn't really add anything over his Banner specific set. Also Tom's set comes with a sheet of resin chocks, watertight raised deck hatches small deck lockers and a few other small resin parts that are missing from the kit. The resin parts are a real gem. I will be doing a review of the Tom's set within the next few days and will discuss the differences between the two kits. >> Finally, is there anything out there that would turn the Arizona (in 1941 trim) into a the Pennsylvania in her late-war configuration? << In short no. there are many differences between the two ships as of 12-7-41. "Rumor" has it that a retrofit kit may be in the works, so I would hold my horses on that one for the present. Regards, Bradford Chaucer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Devin J. Poore" Subject: Juneau gun question Another question concerning my ongoing project. In this picture http://users.rcn.com/devinj/juneau.jpg), notice that the three 5-inch mounts have very dark gray or black barrels and blast bags. However, the "waist" mount on the port side seems to have larger blast bags, and they and the barrels appear to be in a light gray. What would account for these differences? Possibly maintenance on the centerline mounts, oiling the barrels, etc? Appreciate any input. Thanks, Devin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: Banner Arizona >> I just bought the Banner Arizona ($24.00) and am very pleased with it. Definitely not the highest quality molds I have ever seen, but this kit has a lot of potential. I also bought a Tom's brass railing set with ladders, and also their early battleship set. << You actually should buy Tom's specific set for the Banner Arizona. The rails are specifically set up for each location, and all of the parts are exact for this kit while the Early Battleship set is rather generic >> The kits catapults, boat, and aircraft cranes will look so much better with these brass replacements. (BTW That set also includes the cagemasts for backdating the ship.) << Far more than merely adding cage masts will be needed to backdate to the 1921 fit. >> Quickly scanning the kit and test fitting the decks shows that the main decks are mis-aligned at the bulkheads (where the casement guns are placed). << I presume that you mean the upper deck not the 3 section main deck The main decks seemed to fit quite well, though there might have been some misalignment of the scribing. Also the 3 sections are thinner than the molded in sections making it difficult to achieve a smooth transition. >> Plus, I don't like those holes for the portholes. In scale a person could crawl through those portholes. I think I'll be replacing those bulkheads with Evergreen styrene, and making a shallow drill mark for the portholes. << There is also that ugly seam to contend with. The wedding cake tier approach; a carryover from the Revell kit was a big mistake. Also the casemate 5 inchers may be somewhat mislocated. I am planning to completely replace the casemate sidewalls with evergreen stock. >> That will also keep the porthole sizes consistent with the hull. However, in test fitting the other separate deck parts, the little foredeck insert fits snugly, as does the aft deck where the aircraft catapult is. << Yes as I commented above, the decks fit the hull quite well but may be more difficult to keep flat and on level from section to section. Given that plus the problem with the raised plank lines has lead me to do a replacement for the deck. >> Speaking of aircraft, the Kingfishers will need a some work too, or just replace them with WEM castings. << That seems to be the consensus Regards, Bradford Chaucer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: Cage masts >> Mike Quan and I were discussing the cage masts on Marc Flake's USS Maryland (Very nice job on her, Marc. And a nice hob of hiding that seam in the cage mast - I won't tell anybody where it is). The masts were supposed to be parabolic, but the ones in the kit rolled into a truncated cone. Do any of the single-piece etched cage masts roll into a parabolic format? << No, it is not geometrically possible to do so with the conic section that the PE is provided in. The parabolic profile results from giving the individual stringers a twist around the base axis. I think that Rusty once described a technique for fabricating as cage mast from brass wire. His technique would probably result in a more correct profile. Perhaps he can repost it. >> I know that someone made some two-part masts that joined in the middle to make the waist. << As I remember it was BWN those while somewhat more correct gave an angular profile, not the parabolic profile. A note to the readers of this site: From time to time there is strong discussion about having kits which represent the Washington Treaty "never builts." I can only remind you that Mr. Bartel had in the past produced such kits. If Mike gets back into modelling those ships, I would ask that you all cast you vote with your purchases. This can only HELP the shipmodelling craft. No, I don't derive financial gain from touting Mr. Bartel's products. But even if I did, the value of Mr. Bartel's products stand without need for any endorsement. << Thanks very much for the kind words, Mr. B! If there's anyone who wants the 1:700 Algerie, you can always let me know via email, and I will put your name on a list. Send me your name, address, phone and email address, and how many kits you think you will want. The estimated price range at the moment is $60-$70, and I hope to have it available within the next six months. I will be including all parts to do the ship in any one of two or three different distinct fits, which is the reason for the higher cost. The kits will ONLY be available through IHP, so getting on this list is a good idea. You can also follow the progress of the kit's release at the IHP website. Also, please encourage anyone you know who wants this kit (who may not have email access) to follow this procedure. It will give me a good idea of how many kits to order. I have no plans to reissue any of the cancelled ship kits. I am making the move towards producing only 'built' subjects under the IHP label. However, there has been a development on one of my 'cancelled' ship kits (a certain large USN subject) that will please everyone looking for this particular subject.
