Everything but the fine detail is in place and this morning I gave them both a coat of the light grey floquil primer and they both look nice. Seams are gone, surfaces are smooth, etc and with the thin coating of light color paint the details really pop out. But if I go on to add historically accurate paint schemes the ships will be much darker and it will be harder to really see and appreciate the ships, their lines and details (that's why they call it camoflage, right?). So my thought is to finish them both in a monotone light grey that optimizes the ability to see the form and lines of the ships, do a sort of diorama and mount them onto a sheet of dark reflective glass as a design study of two navies and two solutions. Any thoughts? And not that I've ever built for competition but how would judges feel about this? Tom K -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Mitsuaki Kubota Subject: WW II British carrier flight deck Folks, I have some questions about WW II British carriers. Did any kind of coverings exist on their flight deck? (Corticene, Semtex etc...) Or bare steel metal? If it was bare steel, did any "non slip paints" applied? Also, did "Eye Bolt" fitted to their flight deck? As far as I research some on deck photos, I couldn't find any of them nor fixing wire between aircrsft and flight deck. Good suggestions are welcome! Best regards, Mitsuaki Kubota http://www.hig.tocolo.or.jp/hmdock/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Harold Stockton" Subject: Soviet Submarine Models in 1/400 scale I just recently found a Spanish model shop on the net and they had these four Soviet submarines listed on their website at: http://www.ambbit.es/bumslot/navales.htm This company has quite a few other military subjects that are not currently available any where else, so you might want to check out their other selections. These submarine kits are made in the Ukraine by AER and should be quite good quality. I recently saw on a Polish model shop's website that there are four or five WW-II German submarine kits that are also available in 1/400. And, if memory serves me right, there is also some WW-II British submarine kits in this same scale available in Poland. All of the below listed kits are listed at around 6.88 Euros, or $ 6.30. I saw this on e-bay today. The item is number 1629158646. Good luck. Anyone got any hints on how to simulate coils of rope in 1:350? I'm thinking about the sort of coils that would be 'hanging' from the lifeboat davits. Haven't been able to find any aftermarket parts - not something readily photo-etchable I guess.... I dont live in Boston, further south but its hard to believe that they hassled the people who owned boats. Im quite sure that my small town police force is worse than the BPD! Godspeed, Shahriar -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Poutre, Joseph A" Subject: Re: US Navy Declares War against Boston Police! >> Just some interesting stuff.... Sunday the USS CONSTITUTION was performing a turn around cruise as Cmdr. Foster (Boston SmmlieCon 2000 attendees may remember him) was turning over command to his sucessor. As the ship proceeded to fire a salute, it was discovered too late that someone had left the Tampion in the starboard saluting cannon. The Tampion hit, and holed, an escorting policeboats' bow, just above the waterline at a range of approx 100 yds. << Reminds me of my summer as maintenance worker at Ft. William Henry. One of the demos is the firing of a cannon. One tour was running late, and there were two guides detailed with the procedure. After the cannon fired, the nearby phone/power wires were singing and bouncing far more than usual. Wondering happened, one of the guests remarked "You shoot ramrod!" (That's a quote.) Well, it was fired over a full parking lot and toward a miniature golf course. I helped look, and had horrible thoughts about where it went. It actually managed to spin right over a car and ended up under the front bumper (the side _away_ from the cannon) without hitting anyone or anything. Needless to say, when I got "promoted" to tour guide, the ramrod, and other into-the-barrel implements, _never_ left my hand from the time I picked it up to use it until the time I put it down. Then there was the time another guard forgot to clear the barrel of his musket, which was fired toward the Lake George tour boats. And the triple-strength powder load for the cannon on my last tour... Joe Poutre -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Ken Goldman" Subject: Re: US Navy Declares War against Boston Police! Question: unless the offending saluting gun is a breech loader, which Constitution would not have had originally, how exactly does one load a muzzle-loading cannon without first removing the tampion? We are not big on saving ships, unlike our overseas counter parts, we only save a little bit from each ship or just whatever someone can save from the ship before she gets taken to the scrappers! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: lionyg@singnet.com.sg Subject: Shops in Mobile, Alabama? Near HMS Illustrious and the RAF display. (What I seem to recall as the Small Ships canteen area from when I was in the RN). There will be a number of first class C/F (Coastal Forces) models on display as well as interesting veterans to meet. For those of you that purchased my first ever book, "The Fairmile "D" Motor Torpedo Boat" in the Anatomy of the ship series, I have taken the opportunity to have the original dust jacket painting by Geoff Hunt, printed in a limited addition. (1000 only). They will be on sale at the stand for the first time. (Price about £4:00). Profits will go to the C/F H.T. I hope to attend the Do in Southampton in the evening. I will make the above stand my contact point as I have a number of stands to liase with. Looking foreword to meeting you all.
