You can receive a free color poster of 12 emblems (Scheer, Spee, Deutschland, Lützow, Blücher, Hipper, Prinz Eugen, 5X, Schlesien, Hessen, Bremse, and Brummer) from me by e mail. Ulrich H. H. Mispelkamp Subject: Re: Graf Spee Badge Steve: You are right - but just a little off in your timing. The KM did remove the coat of arms from their ships very early during WWII. In addition, the eagle with a swastika stern emblem was also removed. However, in the case of the Graf Spee it seems very likely that her crew simply painted over the coat of arms, see the photo on page 35 of Breyer's "Pocket Battleship Admiral Graf Spee". Also, there is a photo of the Graf Spee in Montevado that clearly depicts her colourless shield - it was published in the old Warship profile on the Graf Spee (no. 4). Don't forget, the Graf Spee left Germany before the war began and I doubt that anyone would have wanted to tip off Polish or British intelligence that Hitler was definitely serious about starting a shooting war later that year. As for the stern emblem, there is a picture in Koop's volume on the Deutschland class ships (top of page 205) that clearly suggests that it was not removed either. Unfortunately, the photos in the books by Breyer and Koop are not dated, but since the one in the Breyer book shows in her wartime camo, with the dummy superfiring "B" turret and false second funnel, I think we can say it is pretty positive proof. As for the colours of the shield - lets just say that I do not intend to start another "colour" thread today!!! PS It's great to have SMML back:))))))) Happy ship modeling. Peter K. H. Mispelkamp Hi Peter, Ahhhh we're still touring the UK for another 2 weeks ;-)). So SMML will still be on a reduced schedule until we get back home. Regards, Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: 3.7cm SKC30 gun >> Does anyone have any photos/drawings of the 3.7cm SKC30U gun they'd like to share, or know where I can get some good detailed info on. I have the left side and top views as found in "Anatomy of the Ship - Type VII U-boat", but need the right side for my project. Thanks. << Doug, Ironically, you are working on a similar quest as I. I have found the same views on the same mount, but with the shield. I am also looking for drawings on the twin 20mm and single 40mm, so if you or any other SMML'ies happen to have, or know about the existence of such German KM mounts, please speak up! Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: NEVENGER@aol.com Subject: any news on ICM ships I was wondering if there was any new info on when the ICM Hood or Japanese cruisers will be out??? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Franz Aigner GmbH" Subject: Degaussing cables Degaussing cables were meant to protect against magnetic mines. Did they work against magnetic torpedos, too? Seriously wondering, Richard -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Harold Stockton" Subject: Re: AM-241 Re: Dirk Emmermacher" and USS Hilarity, AM-241 A number of the Admiralty class minesweepers were initially laid down for transfer to the RN but before they were commissioned the USN retained them for its own use. If you check out the hull numbers on the Mine warfare site you will notice wuite a few hull numbers missing. I have contacted the site's Webmaster with the appropriate missing information, but as yet he has not updated the list of the missing hull numbers. Concering Dirk's question about the Measure that the Hilarity was finished in, she was pained in a modified Measure 3 Light Gray System for maximum concealment of type and course against surface detection by submarines. As the available photographs show her lightest color to be Haze Grey (5-H), this would make the Measure to be 32. If her lighter color would have been Ocean Grey (5-0), this would have made it Measure 31. The darker color being Black (BK). Both of these modified Measure 3 schemes were heavily influenced by the RN Admiralty "A" pattern.
