Owens Gary Kingzett Larry Ouellette John Frohock If you know of any more to add the list, please do so. Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Pletscher-Lenz-Schneider" Subject: Missing SMML member Does anybody know the whereabouts of Dave Krakow? I tried to contact him, but couldn't come through. Falk Pletscher -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: FLEET REVIEW As a sad person who is travelling on Thursday to the airshow thats now cancelled (so now plans a zoological tour than a military one) & last time i tried to go, it was flooded out..picture a B-1 with its nose wheel just about underwater! then you got the 75th anniversary & then had arranged to fly back, dump by trash at the office & dash down to the first of the open days...well thats all now down the gurgler! But also as a holder of a cruise ticket for the fleet review, Vagabon cruises told me that their still might be a "fleet review" of sorts.. Nothing is confirmed yet, but maybe it might still be the patrol boats & mine sweepers & as orginally planned the Tall Ships might still do their parade thru the harbour to take the Salute. Its sad they did cancel it (mumbles a few choice words about terrorists) as it would have been a proud day for the last of the DDG's here, as HMAS Brisbane would have been the according to stories, the head ship in the parade..before she is decommissioned & most likley sent to a watery grave for the divers & fish to enjoy..so for those Sydney siders, just keep an eye on the papers, who knows what may happen, but it wouldnt be as good as it was supposed to be (more curses to terrorists) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Mike Schubert Subject: Who would like to see Allied Coastal Forces - VOLUME 3? Yes pleeeeeease. That includes volume 1 and 2 that I missed out on (much to my chagrin) as well. I have had to make do with the articles & plans that were printed in the Airfix and Military Modelling magazines way back when. Tony can be quite hard to reach at times and seems to disappear for days and then return. This might be one of those times. He used to have his phone number listed somewhere under the contact us section. You might want to see if it is still listed and call him. Many thanks for the many answers I've received about the travel my friend Pierre Marchal plans to make later this year. (He's the guy who made the USS Missouri in a recent Model Ship Journal). Best regards, Jacques Druel L'Arsenal -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: annobon4@aol.com Subject: Seaview and Spindrift Hi Guys I have some news concerning the SSRN Seaview and Spindrift models. These are the old Aurora kits and will be reissued under the Polar Lights Logo instead of the reborned Aurora company. What happened is this. The Grandson of one of the 3 orginial founders of Aurora wanted to bring it back. But suffers from medical problems. This has prevented the rebirth of Aurora. Also for many years it's been thought that for many years molds were destroyed by a train accident to or by Monogram after Aurora closed it's doors in 1977. Not nessicary I don't know how much was kept by the guys grandpa but he kept some molds for his self. Also 3 molds in 1/350 were made to do the Titanic and her 2 sisters were made. Yet not issued. The Seaview and the Flyning Sub are to come out in March 2002. Price unknown and this news is available at the Starship Modeler website. He lives on Staten Island and I haven't heard from him since the 8th. Hopefully, the phone lines are out, he is out of town on business or vacation or he is just really busy. He ordered a few things, we exchanged several emails but he hasn't followed up since the 8th, and considering his proximity to WTC I am beginning to worry about his safety. This is NOT a Restricted File. Denis K -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: andy vu Subject: Konishi Kits Dear SMML fellows: I thank you all, especially Mike Dassele and Alan McGivern, for the information concerning the Konishi kits. The only things I knew about the kits were the models that Alan put on the Gallery at the Steel Navy website; they are really astounding. Maybe Alan will show us some of them at the IPMS National in Oklahoma City. There must be many SMML members interested in these Konishi kits. Keep on modelling Andy Vu -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: HGYL@aol.com Subject: Re: J CLASS YACHTS J class yachts were only single masted. Abe Taubman has plans of several of them in his catalogue from which I have built, successfully, models of "Endeavour" and "Rainbow". Ian Dear's book "Enterprise to Endeavour" tells the story of the whole series and is fascinating reading. All three of the surviving J class, "Endeavour II", "Shamrock V" and "Velsheda" (which oddly never raced in the America's cup) were at Cowes for the America's cup celebrations this past August. It's a shame that they did not come into Portsmouth as part of the Festival of the Sea, they are all three magnificently restored. "Endeavour II" and "Shamrock V" are generally to be seen at Newport RI during the summer months. Harold Lincoln -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: HGYL@aol.com Subject: Re: ALLIED COASTAL FORCES Re John Lambert's message about Volume 3 of Allied Coastal forces and republication of the first two, I for one would be interested. Harold Lincoln -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: "Denis Keegan" Subject: Vol 3 Allied Coastal Forces I doubt if the announcement of the publication of ANY book would be the occasion for such rejoicing as this. The reprinting of Vols 1 and 2 will only add the icing to the cake. I know personaly of at least 8 people who would love to get the whole set. Please John ...Just DO It -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: Steve Sobieralski Subject: Re: Allied Coastal Forces - VOLUME 3 Count me in. Steve Sobieralski -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Why no AOTS Arizona? I was wondering why the NIP has never commissioned an Anatomy of the Ship book on the USS Arizona? If ever there was a potential big seller that would be it. They could easily sell thousands to modelers alone. There is no shortage of plan drawings, information, photos or historical facts on the Pennsylvania class. Being an illustrator, I understand the enormous amount of time it would take to produce such a book, but I can't help but think it would be one of the best selling AOTS books ever. I mean the market and demand is there, so why hasn't a book on the subject ever been done? Just wondering. The miltary is always making changes to the paint it uses. Craig -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21) From: "John W. Wressell" Subject: Re: J Class plans Re Graeme Martins inquiry on J Class boats. The J's were raced in the 1930's and he could get plans from either the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine or the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, UK. The original America's Cup yachts, which were schooners in the 1850's, could be gotten from the National Maritime Museum. Another source would be Taubman Plans Service International in Jersey City, NJ, USA. I believe all three of these sources have Websites. John, In response to your request: >> In an effort to raise enthusiasm would members please give me an idea of those who would be interested if Al Ross and I were persuaded to complete the task. I will be driving I-95 from Jacksonville though Washington DC on my way to Pittsburgh. I was wondering if any of you could point me out any real big hobby stories that have lots of Warship stuff on my travels. Warship Models Underway www.warshipmodelsunderway.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Performance insurance, consider it In light of the events of the week, we (IPMS Metro Okla. City and IPMS/USA) decided to invest in performance insurance for the 2003 IPMS/USA Nationals in Oklahoma City. For those of you who aren't aware of what performance insurance is, it's insurance that would protect the host chapter and IPMS/USA from financial liability if the Nationals are canceled or drastically cut back due to circumstances beyond our control. There's nothing new about performance insurance. It has been used in the past for IPMS Nationals and will no doubt be mandatory from now on. The guys in Orlando purchased the insurance just in case a hurricane decided to blow through. Even if this occurred a month or so before their event, it would no doubt cause a ton of cancellations in the hotel that they could be held liable for under their respective contracts. The guys in VA Beach also have this insurance from I've been told for the very same reasons. I wasn't sure if we needed this insurance for our event (not many earthquakes or hurricanes here) but after the bombing here in Oklahoma City and the WTC attack, the decision became very easy to make. Fire, earthquake, flood, hurricanes, tornadoes and now terrorism could cause the host chapter and IPMS/USA to take a tremendous financial hit if we aren't prepared. While the cost of the insurance isn't cheap, it's FAR cheaper than the potential disaster we would be liable for if we didn't have it. I'm posting this because I've been getting a LOT of emails wanting to know how we're protecting ourselves (and IPMS/USA) if something like the Sept. 11 attack occurred a month or so before a National Convention. We are now financially prepared for the worst, but we will never recover emotionally from Sept. 11. Life, business and the nationals must go on or the bastards win. If your club is considering hosting a large event, it could be worth the money for the peace of mind this policy can provide. The price for this insurance goes up and down depending on the liability of the purchaser. Check with your local insurance agent for pricing.
