Theisen Al Ross If you know of any more to add the list, please do so. Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: ZMzimmerman@cs.com Subject: Allied Coastal Forces Vol. 3 I will gladly buy a copy, even better if one and two are reprinted. Michael Zimmerman -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: SantMin@aol.com Subject: Re: hobby shop >> I will be driving I-95 from Jacksonville though Washington DC on my way to Pittsburgh << I assume you will be using the Washington beltway I-495, not driving right through Washington. The next exit north from where I-95 hits 495 is Braddock Road (used to be exit 5 but they just changed them, I think it's now 55 or 54 but there's still a sign that says "old exit 5"). There a little mall right there on Braddock road and the exit ramp. About a block up the road beside the mall is Granddad's hobby shop. It's a general hobby shop but he does have one isle of ship stuff and a lot of Gold Medal Models brass. By the way, there's a neat eating place in that mall called Kilroy's, tons of old WWI and WWI posters all over the walls and good food too. Cheers. Bob Santos -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject: Submarine periscope I would appreciate any leads to model fittings vendors who might carry the projecting (extended ) portion of a submarine's periscope. I want one for a project I am working on, but can't seem to find suitable detail information to make one. Scale is not all that critical, as I can scale a purchased one to fit my needs. Thank you. Franklyn -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Kdg345@aol.com Subject: USS Yancey AKA-93 I am building a 1/96 scratch model of the USS Yancey AKA-93. I have lots of plans but I would like to locate a much smaller model if any one knows where I can find one. In the 70s I had a model but lost it somewhere. I want to use this to guide me in the details. My current concern is how far up on the hull to paint the red bottom. I did find the line where the black paint goes on the hull - it was listed on the plans as something like "Load level" and I was able to confirm this measurement by more than one photo (black & white) but can't locate the beginning of the red paint. Ken Groom -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Doug Wilde" Subject: J boat plans Plans for the Herreshoff designs would be available from the Hart Museum at MIT. Expect to pay a pretty penny. The Smithsonian also may have some lines. Check their catalog. Uffa Fox produced a series of book in the mid-1930s that reviewed the work of many contemporary designers, both in the US and Europe. Line drawings and photographs as well as detailed rigging drawings in the back for selected designs. Search the LOC catalog for Uffa Fox and obtain copies on interlibrary loan. Uffa was invited to Germany to give a talk in 1936 or 1937. His recounting of that trip (in one of these books) is most interesting, with sticky etiquette questions such as whether someone starts his lecture with "Heil Hitler" or not. Doug Wilde -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: AAA Hobby Subject: Re: Why no AOTS Arizona? Rusty, I haven't heard Steve say anything about it, but we have been shipped several copies of the new Arizona book put out by the memorial people, but it is being distributed by Classic Warships. If this is anything like the last two new issues we just got in the shop today, it will be terrific. BTW, Steve, we have to reorder both Benson & Wichita books already!! I esp. enjoyed the Benson/Gleaves book with all the **DIFFERENT** camo patterns you were able to find! YES Peter Chant Plymouth -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: annobon4@aol.com Subject: Re: Seaview and Spindrift Hi Guys A correction is due on Seaview and Spindrift models. They are part of the Irwin Allen model set. Irwin Allen produced several tv shows on fantasy and scifi back in the 60's. Seaview is a sub from Voyage to the bottom of the Sea and the Spindrift is a orbital airliner from Land of the Giants. 30 yrs has gone by and I confused the name Spindrift with the Flyning Sub. But the Seaview and Spindrift will supposely come out in March,2002. What I finally decided on, however, was a suggestion I got from an aircraft message board. I had asked there, figuring the raised panel lines on aircraft were about what I was attempting to replicate. << Very nice technique. One small correction- while we ship modellers are trying to have a raised line to replicate a weld bead, the aircraft guys generally revile raised lines, and are looking for ways to make them into recessed lines, which more closely resemble the panel construction on aircraft. Tom -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Hughes Family" Subject: Re: Looking for real big hobby stores on my way RD: I can't speak about stores on the way up from Jacksonville but I live in Pittsburgh and the best store IMO in the Pittsburgh area is A.B. Charles, 3213 West Liberty Avenue, Dormont PA, (412) 561-3068, a suburb south of Pittsburgh. They have a wide range of ships, not just your battleships and aircraft carriers. Although they didn't have many resin kits last time I was there. Hope this helps. Jeff Hughes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Infomation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Vincent Mccullough" Subject: Re: Performance Insurance I'll second Randy's comments on performance insurance. As co-chair of the NRG 2001 conference, which is coming up in two weeks, I can tell you I wouldn't be developing ulcers if we had it now. We DO have liability insurance. That's something new that the NRG began providing for the conference hosts last year. But I can tell you, we will be looking at performance insurances at the next board of directors meeting. Other things to keep in mind: make sure that EVERY ONE of your contracts for hotels, transportation, entertainment, etc have a force majeure clause, that allows you to terminate a contract without penalty in the event of natural disaster, war or terrorism. Our hotel contract has one. I remember reading it and thinking "that's something that we'll never need to worry about." Guess what? The good news is that we are moving forward with the conference, and won't be exercising the clause. But I'm glad its there anyway. I'll see some of you in a few weeks! God bless America!
