He was bumped from SMML a couple of weeks before the events of the 11th September due to bounces from his AOL account, so it's possible he has moved?? If ANYONE can help with getting in contact with Dave, it would be most appreciated. Here's more SMMLies "checking in" from the East Coast: Rod Dauteuil, Massachusetts If you know of any more to add the list, please do so. Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Lars Scharff" Subject: Re: HMS Enterprise and other odd British cruisers Hi Lawrence, there exist to my knowledge no kits of any C-, D-, E- or Cavendish-Class in 1/700, except of ORP Dragon (ex HMS Dragon). HP-Models produce a kit of her, but it is not very accurate and detailed. I would not recommend it (I bought it five years ago). I have an acticle about a conversion of IJN Tenryu by Hasegawa to HMS Delhi, but it contains no drawings. For drawings and photos I recommend British Cruisers of WWII by Raven and Roberts. I have drawings of the following ships: HMS Caledon (1917), HMS Ceres (1936), HMS Coventry (1936), HMS Calcutta (1939), HMS Danae (1936), HMS Delhi (1919), HMS Delhi (1942), HMS Frobisher (1942), HMS Effingham (1925 and 1939, only profile), HMS Emerald (as built, only profile), HMS Emerald (after 1934) and HMS Enterprise (after 1935, only profile). I can mail you them, if you need them. They are also on my own wishlist. One of my projects is to use a card kit of ORP Dragon (JSC) to built some of C- and D-class, e.g. HMS Caledon in 1941. I copied it from 1/400 to 1/700 and I will built it directly from card or use it as template for plastic sheets. HtH! v/r, Tomt. (Tom Teliczan) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: David Fisher Subject: Capstans How were naval and CG capstans of the 1850's constructed? Were they entirely of wood with metal bands and upright "ribs"? If they included metal were they iron are were some parts brass? Dave Fisher -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: TechnoInfidel@webtv.net (John Collins) Subject: Coastal Forces Books Greetings: I, too, would be interested in all three of the Coastal Forces books. Several lists ago, someone posted a small review of a book about the Italian Navy in World War II. I apparently deleted when I should have saved. Would who ever posted the message, please repost or send the title, author, etc. to me off-list? Thanks, John Collins Atlanta, GA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Mike Leonard" Subject: Imex Catalog I spotted a new Imex-Eastern Express catalog in a local hobby shop today. It previewed the following tantalizing subjects in 1/350 scale: Imperial Russian battleships "Borodino"and "Peresvet", the early Soviet battleship "Gangut", and four Soviet submarine types: Project 665, 670, 670M, and 945. It does have a website www.courierpostonline.com/battleship so that if any one's interested you'll be able to find it.They haven't released it yet but it comes out in November. Craig -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Keith Bender" Subject: USS Hornet CV 8 Hi SMMLies, Need some input on the Hornet. Aft end below the flightdeck there was a catwalk. In the mid ship area the catwalk had a small platform hanging lower then the catwalk itself. I need to know some of the items that are on this platform. For one I notice there is a stern light. But what is the large round shape object ? Looks almost like some sort of reel but I can't tell. Any help is always greatly appreciated, Keith -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: stillmo@mb.sympatico.ca Subject: Re: Enterprise photo CD review Mr. Peter Chow, please email me at stillmo@mb.sympatico.ca regarding photos of modern warship. BTW for newcomers to this fine list, remember that Kurt Greiner of SEAPHOTO has superb deatil shots, detail sets of, modern warships that he has labored at for many many years now. Lots of photos exist, its just finding the person or persons that have them. God Bless the ships of the modern US Navy and the brave crews that are sailing into harms way. Ray D. RDBean -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Subject: Warship Pictorials #12 & #14 >> For the cost of about $28 bucks (American) I just got more than a $150 worth of photos of good quality in Wiper's new booklets. AND, he even included some plans of both the Gleaves class DDs & the Wichita CA! Thanks Steve. Don't stop! << Thanks Bert! Actually, if you were to go by the prices of the photos available from the Floating Drydock, which is the least expensive source, then for the 261 photos in both books combined, the cost to you would be about $912.00. I also think that many of the photos in my books are NOT available from most of the retail photo sources. The Floating Drydock will charge approx. $3.50 per photo in a large order. The Nat. Archives, or the Naval Historical Center will charge about $20.00 to $25.00 per photo. So lets see, 261 photos at a max cost of $25.00 per = $6525.00. WOW! The Imperial War Museum in the UK wants a £65 per photo royalty. That's about $98.00 each to us Yanks. You do the math! Now, do any of you still want to know why there have be so few pictorials on British Naval vessels? One more little thing. If there are 50 or more pages between the covers, it is a book, soft cover, hard cover, whatever! They must be popular, because I shipped over 3200 in the last 10 days! That is a record for me. I hope all you that have gotten them, enjoy looking thru them as much as I do in their research and construction. Marc Flake -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Marc Flake Subject: Revell PT 212 I've seen the Revell kit for PT 212 on eBay several times over the past two weeks. The highest price I saw one sell for was about $60. I remember building this kit as a youngster, only then it was boxed as McHale's Navy PT 73. There's a fair picture of a built up model on eBay right now. It's a Higgins boat with two twin .50 caliber gun turrets just behind the bridge and four roll-off torpedoes. I think there are three 20mms, too, but I can't quite see (or remember) what's on the fantail. I've got a couple of questions: First, does anyone know what scale this is or how it stands up against the PT 109 kit? And, second, is there anyone out there with some swing with Revell to find out the status of the mold and the possibility of reissuing it? Marc Flake -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: PT Dockyard Subject: Re: Higgens 69' Al, If you and John can't find it, who can????? The Ian Allen Book on British Warships in World War 2 has the only shot of this I have seen. I called UNO a few years ago and it sounds like if they have drawings, they are the full size ones.! I can always hope... Dave at the P.T Dockyard -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "JediCornholio" Subject: Re: SS Orina The SS Oriana kit is no longer owned by Revell, but Modelcraft. The scale is 1/500, it's highly detailed, and it is equipped with a motor supplied by Modelcraft. Thanks, Will -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: Randy Short Subject: authors I too need to contact Peter C. Smith and David Wragg. No luck through the publishers. Help! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: "David Clark" Subject: FLOWER CORVETTE CREW I prefer to populate my models, be they vehicles, aircraft or vessels and I thought that more than 15 crew would necessary to give an impression of a Flower corvette under way or in action. However, I now realise that I have no idea how many crew would be visible at action stations, for example, and where would they be placed. I am currently reading Monsarrat's Three Corvettes and he mentions being in command of five ratings on the 2pdr when in anti-aircraft actions stations. I have also located a book corvette oral history but haven't read it yet. It does have some interesting photos of crew sleeping/sunbathing on deck and enjoying a soak in a makeshift swimming pool Any suggestions as to how many crew would be visible and where they would be located under different conditions?
