I thought I included Peter Chows email address with the posted review. His address is: meterman@mediaone.net Rusty White 2003 IPMS/USA National Convention Chairman OKC IN 2003! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject: Re: Submarine periscope Thanks to the SMML people who responded to my inquiry about submarine periscope above-the-surfave details, It is appreciated. Now another request for information. I am looking for straight brass rod in two sizes, .010" and .025, for stanchions and railings for a model I am finishing. Can anyone suggest some sources of supply? Hobby shops and hardware stores do not carry these items. Franklyn Brown (Boston) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: ALROSS2@aol.com Subject: Re: Revell PT 212 >> I've seen the Revell kit for PT 212 on eBay several times over the past two weeks... I've got a couple of questions: First, does anyone know what scale this is or how it stands up against the PT 109 kit? And, second, is there anyone out there with some swing with Revell to find out the status of the mold and the possibility of reissuing it? << This 50+ year old kit is roughly 1/104 scale and does not depict any particular HIGGINS, especially not a 200 series boat, despite being released over the years as 207, 209, 211, and 212. The hull is vaguely similar to a HIGGINS but has major inaccuracies such as a concave bottom, wildly curved chine, and a skeg. The cockpit is approximately that of a 460 series boat, although the raised portion between the turrets didn't exist. Basically, if you want to produce an accurate model from this kit, you will need to perform major surgery. Photos of the 200 series boats can be found in the following books: Chun, Victor. American PT Boats in World War II. Connelly, T. Garth. PT Boats In Action. Friedman, Norman. U.S. Small Combatants - An Illustrated Design History. Johnson, Frank. United States PT Boats of World War II in Action. Polmar, Norman and Samuel L. Morison. PT Boats at War. The Johnson book is out of print, but the other four are available. There is a drawing of PT 209 in the Friedman book. He would probably like matches for both white and gray schemes. He is working on his latest pattern for a future release of the Oregon in 1/350 resin. This should be a beauty, as his first kit, the Greek armored cruiser Averof, was superb. Anyone with information is encouraged to e-mail Yiannis at: sagiadin@otenet.gr Thank you, Bill Gruner Pacific Front Hobbies -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Mike Settle Subject: Re: SS Orina >> The SS Oriana kit is no longer owned by Revell, but Modelcraft. The scale is 1/500, it's highly detailed, and it is equipped with a motor supplied by Modelcraft. A review can be found at: http://www.debrisfield.com/Products/kits/mcoriana/mcoriana.htm << Thanks for the info, Stevo. I found one currently on ebay, but at $16.99 plus $6.00 shipping, I think I will pass based on Modelcraft's suggested retail of $20.00. By the way, that website is excellent. Subject: Crew members on an open deck, Flower-K's I can tell you only from my experiences serving on US DD's and DE's. 20 MM guns had 1 gunner, and 1 loader/ammo handler each. 40's had 1 pointer, 1 trainer, one loader/barrel side. plus ammo handlers, 3-4. Secondary batteries also had a gun fire director in a mount in open elevated tubs. They also had phone talkers, and an Officer. I suppose open 3" & 5" mounts would also have about the same amount of crew. We also had a number of men to operate the "K" guns and DC racks, as well as "Hedge hog" throwers if equipped. By the time I served, 1952-on, we had very little use for any but our 5"s. We would do shore bombardment until we ran out of ammo, then plane guard until we ran out of "bug juice" and spam. Long ago and far away. I have yet to reply to some.. but the information is much appreciated!!!!! Of course if there is more.... cheers. NEXT does anyone know of the Revell Graf Spee kit? and does anyone know of one for sale? am asking on behalf of a buddy in the states whose dad is after one. I didn't even know Revell did one or had done one.. was it any good? regards Simon Wolff -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Operation Center ZAHNARZTPRAXIS 736TLV" Subject: Bismarck colours I am building a BISMARCK in 1/100 and try to find out the real comouflage pattern she had during her last days. Most sources describe, that the black and white stripes and the swastikas on deck have been painted over in Grimstadfjord 21 May 1940. The only thing that would have been kept was the painted white bow wave. I have contact with an officer (now a retired Navy captain) that was aboard PRINZ EUGEN during operation RHEINUEBUNG. He wrote me in a letter, that also the bow wave was painted over. Who knows more? Sincerely Roger Harr SWITZERLAND -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: PT191@aol.com Subject: 1/72 0.5 Vickers gun Hello, Does anyone have a 1:72 scale twin 0.5 inch Vickers gun they'd be willing to part with? If so, please contact me at SC699@aol.com or at Timothy.G.Connelly@Travelers.com. Thank you. T.
