The Italeri 1/720 or Fujimi 1/700 kits are much nicer - each with their own quirks, but head and shoulders better than the Matchbox kit. I prefer the Italeri. Rick -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Ed Grune Subject: Source of Brass Wire Franklyn asked about a source of brass wire. Franklyn - Go to a full-service railroad hobby store and check there. If not in stock - ask them if they can order some from the Walthers Catalog. I looked it up in the online catalog at www.walthers.com and they showed some in sizes 0.006 up to 0.028. They list your 0.010, the closest they stock on your 0.025 is 0.022 or 0.028. I was assured by Robert Jamison the historian at the Independence Seaport Museum that they matched the color from actual paint that was underneath dozen of layers on the ship http://seaport.philly.com/library/index.html I was building the Glencoe Oregon and found much help as far as colors from Bob Santos and Gary Kingzett, members of the SMML: http://smmlonline.com/archives/VOL0912.txt Kevin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Ed Grune Subject: Why re-invent the wheel? Its good to see the List is back to a regular schedule. So tell us Lorna, how was the wedding? The purpose of this post is two-fold. The year 2002 is the centennial year of the US Destroyer Force. The USS Bainbridge (DD-1) was commissioned in November of 1902. First off - I'd like to challenge any SMMLie who may be planning on going to the 2002 IPMS National Convention in Virginia Beach to bring and enter a DD-1 Bainbridge. I have my BWN Bainbridge out and am slowly working on it. Gulfstream made a Bainbridge also. Maybe we can persuade Steve Wiper to re-release it under the Classic Warships brand. Come on! The more the merrier! Secondly; the North Cental Texas chapter of IPMS (IPMS/NCT) has selected as their group entry theme for 2002 - fittingly - "100 Years of the US Destroyer". We're planning on doing almost every class from the Bainbridge to the Zumwalt - in 1:700 scale. Many of the North Texas SMMLies, including Mike Quan, Marc Flake, Mike Zimmerman, and myself are already onboard. One of the local marketeers for Lockheed-Martin is doing the Bath Ironworks/Lockheed Martin version of the DD-21 Zumwalt. (He said that he'd do the Litton/Raytheon version if time permits - or if they win the contract). We already have the hull for a 1:700 scale Bainbridge scratchbuilt. One of our members (an armor guy) is an ex-patriate Canadian - and he's signed up to do a Lend-Lease destroyer - HMCS Niagara. IPMS/NCT has even licensed the use of the Tin Can Sailors centennial logo. I've been able to round-up some of our aircraft, armor, and figure modelers and convert them into ship modelers for the year. If anyone else out there would like to get onboard with us, contact me off-list. I have the power to confer honorary Texan status on those who participate. (Last year's armor group entry was by 38 Texans and a geek from South Dakota!). If you can't partipate but perhaps you might have a few CW or Kobu-Hiryu destroyer kits you would want to sell for the cause - let me know too.
