Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Walt Gay" Subject: Re: ABC TV visits the Australian Battle Group >> Mid September the Australian Broadcasting Corporation visited a meeting of the Australian Battle Group in Canberra. This is the bunch of weirdos who arm their 1/144 scale models with C02 powered cannon and shoot at each other's ships till someone sinks. << Richard, What kind of projectiles do they fire, and how do they reload, how are the guns aimed?? Walt -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: VONJERSEY@aol.com Subject: Re: FLOWER CORVETTE CREW How is The Three Corvetts???? I loved The Cruel Sea. Ken Auslander -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Fernando, Yohan" Subject: USS Oklahoma MS 1 or MS 5? I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a chance that the Oklahoma was in MS 5 (with the false bow wave) like the Nevada on Dec. 7, 1941? She's listed as being in MS 1 according to the Ship Camouflage page, but all the photos I've seen during/after the attack don't really seem to show whether or not it might have been MS 5 (mostly because they were taken after the ship capsized). Is there conclusive proof that it was MS 1 or is it assumed it was MS 1 since most of the battleline (with the exception of the Nevada) was in MS 1? (I'm looking for a reason here, no matter how small, do depict the Oklahoma in MS 5, if you can't tell already...) Thanks, Yohan Fernando -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Ed Grune Subject: Tamiya Round-bridge FLETCHER => Square-bridge Along with buying the Tamiya kit, pick up a Skywave Callaghan. This kit is the amalgam of the old Pitroad "two-fer-one" Fletcher plus all the new parts that will make the kit up into almost anything from round-bridge to post-war FRAM/DDR. This also contains a weapons sprue that will fill most of your needs. Second: what sort of square-bridge are you building? Mid-war - with the twin 40s fore, and waist, a Late-war/Emergency AA fit with twin 40s fore and quad 40s elsewhere, or a post-war fit with 3"/50s. Check your plans closely. You'll need to do a bit of cutting and gluing as you move some deck support structures around to match the weapons layout. The gun tubs you need are included in the weapons sprue, but structures like the clipping shacks and director tower will need to be scratchbuilt or cut from donors. References, WOW - Bob Steinbrunn's #1 recommendation and now mine too; the Floating Drydock's Fletcher-class Plan Book. Jam packed with drawings and photos of everything you wanted to know about a war-time Fletcher AOTS - The Sullivans. Very good also. Takes the USS The Sullivans from as-built, through the Emergency AA fit to Postwar layout If you want in on the IPMS-NCT 2002 Destroyer Group Project - the Square-bridge as-built, Emergency AA Fit, and DDR/FRAM models are available. DAVID P.S. ALWAYS GLAD TO BE OF HELP -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: HAZEGRAYADM@aol.com Subject: Re: Mr. Wakefield on the 1/700 Fletcher Derek: The most glaring need to improve the Tamiya DD kit is in the 5" turrets. Get yourself a copy of a Matchbox Fletcher and steal the main turrets from that kit; they are accurate all the way down to the offset barrels and the knuckled roof on the 51 & 55 mounts. Cut off the depth charge racks and replace with brass. The rest is a matter of choice (Square or round bridge, etc.). The Tamiya kit, other than the above, seems pretty nice to me. Bert McDowell -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Stephen Allen Subject: Revell Elco and ACF Vol 3 Thank you to all the SMMLies who took the time to share their knowledge about Revell's Elco both on and off list. I now know which HR Product's weapons I need to order for a mid/late war boat and what to scratchbuild. I have begun removing the deck planking and relocating the forward 0.50 cal mg tub. Speaking of which, are there any recommendations for replacement 0.50 cal M2s in 1/72 scale to form the basis of new twin mounts? Aires make resin guns, and Aeroclub make white metal replacements - which is better quality, or is there a better alternative? And count me in for ACF Vol 3 - Vol 2 has been tremendously helpful for this current project. Steve -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Duane Fowler Subject: Re: Iowa Class helipad markings By the late 1980s all of the Iowa class BBs had their helicopter deck markings standardized although there were several small changes along the way. They all had the circle in the center with a single stripe through the center front to rear. The white line around the edge of the deck changed a few times from ship to ship. The pattern that you have mentioned and that is supplied in the decals with the 1/350 Tamiya NJ kit is from the early 80s. To mercilessly beat my own drum, in my 1/350 Modern Iowa Class decal set instructions I have illustrated the paterns for all three ships from 1985 on. The decal set includes enough stripes to make any of the patterns. It also includes the bridge rubbons and awards, turret markings, and other details for all four BBs during their final deployments in the early 1990s. At the moment, I have from several sources a lot of input, but no common opinion about the camouflage of BISMARCK during her last days. It would be helpful, if you could add your sources, when you give me an information. I will will make a summary a soon I see clear. The APMA site has received one of its regular updates with more shots of members models, club display days and reference material. For background, APMA has been running for some 26 years, reliably publishes a magazine 4 times a year. The site address is http://apma.org.au The sort of things you'll find at the site include:- o full online searchable magazine index for 25 years (as reviewed in August Internet Modeller. http://www.internetmodeler.com/2001/august/contents.htm) o all magazines available on backorder for the price of a Big Mac (hey it's international currency). Or better still take out a membership. (the latest mag features A-I Destroyers, HMS Onslow, and there's a steady stream of shippy stuff in back issues). o message board facility, specifically useful for questions on Australian modelling subjects, suppliers etc. o reference facilities including walk-arounds o members models photo section. o and we're PayPal enabled which means you can safely pay by credit card. Take advantage of the weak Aussie $ ($1 AUD buys $2 American Dollars or 3 British Pounds!!!) and either join or order some back issues. Or just have a browse. They are: 1.) 1/350 Toms Modelworks early battleship photoetched brass detail set (#3502); 2.) Matchbox (Revell) 1/720 USS Arizona battleship with Tom's Modelworks early battleship photoetched brass detail set (#720) 3.) Revell of Germany/Monogram/Aurora 1/230 USS Skipjack nuclear submarine.
