You can find a link to his website on the home page at: http://www.SteelNavy.com Feel free to chime in here, Steve.... Hi all, You can also find a link to Classic Warships on the SMML site as well. Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Devin J. Poore" Subject: GI Joe I was just walking though the local toy store, and noticed a G.I. Joe figure labeled Pearl Harbor Battleship Row Defender. The sailor has a water cooled .50 cal naval mount packaged with him. Has anyone else seen this that is able to comment on the accuracy of the mount? I'll be attempting to build these mounts from scratch in the future in 1/350th scale, and if this toy is reasonably accurate, it might be worth having for a 3D blueprint. Many thanks to respondents. I am also interested in the thread about 30 cal. This is close to 16473 gloss a/c grey or matt 36440 for scale effect. Auxiliary vessels had black hulls with grey 501-105 approx=FS16270 primer grey and white trim. In the 60s the fleet warships including the remaining tribals wore grey 1-2 (501-109) versions of which are still in use today .The FS match appears to be 16118. I prefer a 1:1 of humbrol 23 duck egg blue and 16473. grey Another current reference has 5 parts of 36440 +1 USSR interior Blue green +3 parts white OR a Pollyscale Pale Blue Grey 30 parts with 1 part of Penn state Central green in acrylic. While appearing very green in overcast conditions the color appears much lighter in bright sunlight. I believe there is at least one colour picture of a late scheme tribal on the Naval Museum of Manitoba website on Canadian naval history Regards Ian -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "David Clark" Subject: MONSARRAT & FLOWER CORVETTE CREW >> How is The Three Corvetts???? I loved The Cruel Sea. << Ken It's many years since I first read Monsarrat and I think his writing has improved with my age. The stories in Three Corvettes combine historical accuracy, a great sense of humour and the art of story telling. The Cassell Military Paperbacks version includes Three Corvettes, I Was There, A Ship to Remember, 'HMS Marlborough Will Enter Harbour', It Was Cruel and The Ship That Died of Shame. I have extracted the following information about crew on deck in different situations: "When 'Anti-aircraft stations' was sounded I put my tin hat on, and climbed up through the dusk to the after gun turret . . . the gun's crew stood silent . . . five young man, steel-helmeted and closely wrapped against the cold . . ." (Monsarrat 2000: 53) "Leaning against the rail by the ensign-staff, I can see the thrower-crews standing by waiting for their orders; farther aft there is a group of spare numbers - off-watch stokers and communications ratings - ready to bear a hand in reloading. Farthest aft of all, I can just make out the Seaman-Torpedoman bending over his depth-charge rails . . ." (Monsarrat 2000: 57) "Strange people come to the surface when 'Action-stations' is sounded - stokers I had no idea were on board, rare faces that never otherwise see the light of day." (Monsarrat 2000: 57) " . . . ratings having no conceivable connection with look-out duties - such as coders and stewards - might be observed scanning the horizon or the sky with professional zeal. But . . . we made the precaution official and doubled the aircraft look-outs all round the ship." (Monsarrat 2000: 97-98) "My place of duty was the now the anti-aircraft gun-turret aft, where there was newly installed a four-barrelled 0.5 inch pom-pom . . . The gun's crew of five was there almost as soon as I was." (Monsarrat 2000: 299) Regards David -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Darren Subject: Re: Canadian Tribal colours Peter, In the early 50's the RCN was using Light Sea Grey, which Humbrol makes, for it's upperworks. The current colour is 501-109, which doesn't mean a whole lot, I know, but I have come up with a mix using Model Master if you want it. (I've posted it before, it is a light grey-green). The problem is, I'm not sure when this colour was introduced. Photos seem to point to it's use as early as '59, but it's impossible to be sure. I'll ask around and see if anyone knows. Darren Scannell -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: cwjerden Subject: Fighting toy boats... Hello all, I'am just now catching up on my mail. I vol 1373 I see a question on R/C combat. Although it lives in many incarnations, R/C combat is a hobby that will amaze your freinds, absorb your time and confound your spouse. The hobby/obsession has been around for over 20 years. Think of it as the first "BattleBots". While the Allied/Axis angle is played up in spirited fun, combat is not about good-vs-evil, it is more like a final exam. A well thought out design, good building and able ship handling score you high marks. Weakness in any of these areas will cause you damage, mistakes will send you swimming. A web site I like is from Chris Pearce, here in Ft. Worth Texas. His site has intresting tours, hints and suggestions. That web adress... http://homepages.waymark.net/~pearce ...and my favorite starting point for new folks... http://homepages.waymark,net/~pearce/tactics/foochan.html ...An interesting, helpful and very ireverent look at this insanity. One last thing, the boats DO SINK! However a well built ship should last 12 to 15 years and over 100 sinkings. BTW the number of fiberglass hulss to be had in 1/144 now is amazing. Most of them will make a fine starting point for a large scale display model. My Z-37 hull is looking good for that kind of project now. Yall have a great day. Peter, A very friendly attaché at the Canadian Consulate in Canberra had their colour question answered for me by the Defence Force Historical Branch. The RCN continued to use the old two tone colours on major warships until the late 1950s. The St.Laurents, bar a couple, all came out in the then new colour. The Canadians used their own numbering system, then incorporated them into a Standard (1-GP-12C) and finally abandoned that and had the Federal Standards Board incorporate their colours as new ones in FS595. The two tone scheme was I-9 Hull and superstructure & upperworks I-6. I-9 became 501-102 and is now FS16099. I-6 became 501-105 and is now FS26329. The current colour was 501-109 and is now FS16480. Decks until recently were 501-102/FS16099. They now look to be the standard US Navy deck paint which both the RN & RAN use ie: FS36076. Xtracolour have this as a gloss paint which survives quite well with a spray of ModelMaster Flat Clear. It matches the RN well. We were on Northumberland this afternoon and matched it to her newly painted deck. We were on some visiting Canadians in June & I took a sample of Light Admiralty Grey on to compare it. Very close if not the same colour. Interestingly the guy showing us around had a connection with their colour. His father was involved in the selection of it. The story was that ships were coming into port after an exercise & an Admiral commented that the British Frigates were missing. They weren't, in the early morning light they faded out until they were closer inshore. The Dark/Light RCN colour scheme stood out like a sore thumb. The British were in their new LAG colour. After experimentation, the RCN came up with its new colour. However, the Light Grey was still used as an upperworks colour until recently for non combatants. I'll send you a colour photo I have of some Auxiliaries in this scheme with black hulls & light grey superstructure. How true is this? I asked which ships and he told me that some did. Well most of the interwar classes wouldn't have them because they were built in as garage style on the superstrutures to be next to the amidship catapaults, looking thru my library and found nothing. Once the hangar hatch slid forward the stern crane was used to lift them up. Any one know?
