The original Navy specs for my WW 1 110 Foot WW 1 submarine Chaser model allow either Lewis or Colt 30 caliber machine guns. They do not mention Brownings at all. Remember, this is the 1917/1918 era. I cobbled something from Bluejacket (in Maine) that looks something like the Colt, but would like to find two correct units if I could, either Lewis or Colt. The whole question of machine guns seems rather academic anyway, as they also had a 3" deck gun with about a 3 mile range, but the U-Boats had a 4" deck gun, therefore the U-Boat could stay out of the Chaser's range and still pound the Chaser. At these distances, what is the role of a 30 cal machine gun? It was unlikely that a U-Boat would be "surprised" on the surface and have to slug it out with a Chaser with deck guns. The main effort of the Chasers developed to be to use hydrophones to detect a submerged U-Boat and attack it with depth charges, not to come to blows with it. The chasers had a top speed of around 18 knots, so the term "Chaser" seems inappropriate. They were a pet project of then Ass't Secretary of the Navy Franklin Roosevelt. " 'nuff said"? Launched in 46, comm in 47. She had 4x4.5 guns although X was removed for a double squid A/S mortar. She was broken up in 1959. Any ideas guys? Note the masts are all grey. Depending on the year you choose, it may or may not have the mast in black. http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/ships/destroyers/obrien/ob-ras.jpg Timothy J. I saw the Tribal and City Classes in our normal lovely bright sun, not the pale Pommy imitation. Our's tends to bleach colours out. I always think it is better to look at a colour in miserable overcast conditions to compare. However, I don't intend to go to Melbourne or England to check out colours. Do they have a sun in Canada? All I can remember from when I lived there is the wind, cold and snow, but pretty in Autumn. Anyone else out there I can upset? Ms. 5 is not an overall measure, just the bow wave. There were even options to that bow wave. Some were just a white outline crest, while others had that crest in white and the body of the wave painted in with Ocean Gray (5-O). << Wellllll, close. The Ships-2 instructions for Measure 5 did NOT specify the use of 5-O Ocean Gray for the body of the wave. Following is the Ships-2 specification: "Painted Bow Wave. "The pattern drawn to scale of the painted bow wave are shown in Plates 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8, respectively, for battleships, aircraft carriers, heavy cruisers, light cruisers, and destroyers. The upper edge of the bow wave is painted white; the dark body of the bow wave is painted a dark blue or a dark gray. In case the bow wave is painted on a ship which is painted dark gray, asin Measure 1, the bow wave painting merely amounts to outlining the upper edge of the wave in white." Note that the instructions specified only a "dark blue or a dark gray" for the body of the wave, not 5-O Ocean Gray.
