Hi, The new 1/350 ships from ICM have been pushed back to at least early to mid 2002. We just have to patient until then. Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: nd.ward@virgin.net Subject: Japanese Cruisers For those of you patiently waiting for the ICM models (when, whenever, if......), why don't you try your hand at a 1/250 Takao, or a 1/200 Hood, Nagato or Shokaku? Try a card model!! Digital Navy will sell you a CD holding the Takao, which you print out using your trusty ink jet printer and away you go. Best thing is.. if you make a mistake just print another page...no one need know! I'm not saying give up the plastic ( or resin), but give it a try. Postage and Packing is cheaper as well!!! Even better, visit the Digital Navy website, and download a few freebies to cut your teeth on. ( No connection with DN, just a satisfied customer) Dave Ward -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "RAY MEHLBERGER" Subject: New Arizona kit Guyz! I see a new BANNER brand 1/350th scale, injection molded, Arizona kit has appeared on the shelves at my local shop. What can any of you tell me about the quality of it?? Regards, Ray Mehlberger -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: andrew jones Subject: HMS Ariadne I hope i spelt it correctly as i left the instruction sheet at home..well anyhow im building the WW2 fast mine layer Ariadne (Matchbox). I have the book that i got from WEM on the ship & gives a great colour reference on the sides, but the decking colour is lacking. I figure that it had a blue main deck, but what about on the 2nd deck was it the same for horizontal surfaces, but what about when the mouve or pink comes along the side of the ship did it also run along the horizontal surface as well? I can figure that the horizontal of the gun's would be the pink or mouve or grey etc. Thanks Andrew Oz -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Subject: A Volume IV now? Hi All I have just read Al's message about his thoughts on the WW I era C/F volume. Mine are similar, there was not a great deal to choose from. I would go as far as to say that the RN in WW II, was still using many of the same designs. Some will be included in Volume III anyway as they were based upon craft of the previous conflict. It would seem that the RN had to relearn all the lessons of the earlier time, anyway. As of today we DO NOT have any contract for Volume III, although I have provided a provisional synopsis. I am still undertaking research and I have (well my partner, following my instructions) has already scribed a chapter on an interim report (1944-5) that examines the efficiency of RN Coastal Forces in WW II. (From a report I uncovered at the PRO (Public Record Office). Another chapter, now part done, provides the RN trials of HMS Tarret, a steel motor yacht with diesel engines that the Admiralty considered might be a useful A/S asset. Tarret completed in the summer of 1939, and the theory was sound. Unfortunately the new power units were not and her 115 ft length (same as the later Fairmile "D") and max speed of around 28 knots (about the same again) was never solved. Can anyone tell me where I can find G/A drawings of this little known subject please. (The archives at Newcastle do NOT have them). However - a follow on thought! Just like Al. I would consider a volume 4 that covered the RN's post war designs. (I have ALL the G/A drawings already). Vosper's 358, Bolds, Gays, etc. Why not tell Conway of your wants. Yours "Aye" John -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: andrew jones Subject: depth charges I am planing (well hoping) to make a 3D diarama of a WW2 Japanese sub chaser depth charging a Gato class sub (1/700)....now the APMA ship modellers know what im planning for end of year comp!, well anyhow.. i have gotten a few good shots what the water explosions above water would be & that i'd make out plaster or putty, but what about under the water..maybe tissues or cotton balls..any thoughts -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Devin J. Poore" Subject: USS Hornet I'm going to be in San Francisco November 10-17th. I know about all the sites to see ship and hobby shop related. My question is are there any days in particular to try for, or to avoid, when going to visit the USS Hornet in Alameda? Are there days when they have limited tours, or days with access to compartments that you can't normally get into? I'd really like to be able to get down into the ship. Here in New York they've got the Intrepid locked up pretty tight, the hanger deck and above is about it as far as seeing anything. Thanks, Devin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Axel Wolters" Subject: Disappearing of our hobby Hi all, referring to the comment of Eduardo from Brazil, I must say, that in Germany there also seems to be a fade out-effect. I am member of a 30 person modellers club (ships, planes, cars, military, figures), we have a meeting every second saturday afternoon and we organize a modelling exhibition each November with approx. 500 visitors. To the exhibitions always come fathers with their boys, who seem to be interested in our hobby. We invite them, to come to our monthly meetings , some come one or two times and then they dont come anymore. Our so called "Modellbau-Team" (Modelling-team) is free for joining us, no membership costs and so on. Everybody is invited to share our hobby. But maybe people fear, to get trapped in a club with rules and so on. The toy shops are reducing their kit departments and all say, that young people prefer buying Video games and such stuff. Where does our hobby go? With fading sales, the kit manufacturers are not willing to pay much money for new tools, because they loose money. We have to think bout ways to make our hobby more attractive to the young. I am 42 years old and began modelling at the age of 11. My interest faded for approx. 5-7 years but grew bigger by joining the modellers-team. So, to all modelling fathers: please show your kids the joy of our hobby. Axel Wolters Moenchengladbach Germany -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Darshan Ward" Subject: What planes in the FAA? Somebody mentioned the other day about the need to relieve themselves every once in a while with the odd quickie plane or two in between ships. Well I must say I do have to agree with that. Ships seem to take up a whole lot of time and there's all the research to do, reading up, dating photographs, detailing with all the little extra bits aand pieces, and then you get to the PE and that has to be put right and so on ........!!! Planes just come out of a box and that's all there is to it! I dont have any reference to do, finished. Never did care too much for wingy things but where they were ship-borne I can allow. So I have a few too, in my closet, and I prefer to just stick to FAA or even RNAS. Apart from the old reliables like swordfish, seafire, seahawk and the like can anyone recommend anything in particular in 1/48. Would very much like to know which PHANTOM variants were carried in the Ark Royal, Which Bucaneer types were seaborne, and which other european or american made types have been in use since say late 60's to present; Oh and who makes a good kit? Thanks to all, and best wishes. Hi Darsham, Try the following sites for FAA/RNAS infomation: APMA: http://apma.org.au - We have a few FAA models in the galleries, plus plenty of infomation on FAA aircraft in our backissues - all of which are available. IPMS(USA) FAA SIG: http://www.faasig.org/ - Highly recommended for all things FAA WW1 Modelling list: http://www.wwi-models.org/ - Excellant resource for WW1 modelling - in fact you may find a few familiar names there as well ;-) FAA Museum - Yeovilton: http://www.fleetairarm.com/ - If you ever get a chance to go here, I highly recommend it. RAN FAA Museum - Nowra, NSW: http://www.museum-of-flight.org.au/ - Another museum which is worth the while to visit.
