Thanks John Fail -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Rod Dauteuil Subject: Italeri USS Harry Truman/Carrier Collection If this topic has been covered before, my apologies. However, I just bought the Italeri CVN USS Harry Truman. I was afraid that it would just be a re-pop of their usual Nimitz class kit, but such is not the case. I was pleasantly surprised to see the airwing, which includes F14's and F18's (which I think it has for some time), but no SH60's. Moreover, there is a separate sprue with all the current fittings such as the solid radar tower, CIWS, and different sponsons. In fact, I think the hull has even been retooled. I'll have to compare it with an older version to be certain. Good decals, sharp detail, all typical of an Italeri kit. In a related subject, I'm on an ambitious project to build one of each modern carrier, from the Forrestal through the Reagan, of course all in the 1/720. Has anybody tried to convert a USS Kitty Hawk or some other modern CV into the USS JFK? I figure the hull and deck would be the best starting point, with a scratchbuilt or kitbashed island. Any thoughts or suggestions? Rod -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Albert Choy Subject: Re: Dumas SUBMARINE I have built the sub kit. Its a good functional boat that you can add super details too if you choose. I made a few functional changes (brass control vanes, rudder and props - the kit comes with plastic parts). It's a fun boat to operate. As a dynamic diver, its technical requirements are pretty simple and cheap. I have since seen the kit advertised for as low as $129. My 3yr is fascinated by sub's open water operations. The seal for the water tight hull compartment is simple and can be a bit messy - notwithstanding, there have been no water leaks. The little guy is now quite interested in my other boats (I have a 8' model of the Titanic under construction - steam & electric propulsion, fog horn, smoke generators, ventilators, and to correct a latent defect, a hidden bow thruster). Baca" Subject: Pearl Harbor Gem >> A quick note on two great books that I found at Barnes & Nobel recently. First one is a great book by Ernest Arroyo, titled "Pearl Harbor". This is a large format book loaded with lots of good quality photos and sells for only $20.00. << On Steve's recommendation a couple of weeks ago, I picked up a copy of Arroyo's book at Barnes and Noble. WOW! is all I can say about it. The photos are unique and very nicely reproduced in this gem of a book. Lots of great stuff here for the researcher. B&N had a good sized stack of them. Have agood one, Victor Baca -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: annobon4@aol.com Subject: USS New Jersey museum Hi Guys Last Friday I went on a tour the Battleship New Jersey BB-62 Museum. I hope to share this with you all. The museum is a work in process with new areas opening up. You travel in a tour group and not by yourself. The tour goes 1 deck below the main deck with 2 decks above the main deck. The 16 inch guns aren't open but they do show a display of their layout. You get to look into a twin 5 inch 38 gun mount. Also as we all know the NJ was built with 10 twin 5 inch guns .Where mounts #5 and 6 were removed with the area was plated over and then covered with teak wood. The outline for those mounts are still visible in the deck.. You get to go to the bridge and interesting the bridge has the armored conning in it near the front wall with the windows. On models the distance looks like 4 or 5 feet to the windows. It's only 1 foot. You get to see the ward room, officers quarters, enlisted quarters, CIC, Flag quarters and Captain's quarters. The ward room lounge is being used for handicapped people to sit in and watch a large screen tv for a tour of the ship as they would have a terrible time going up and down ladders, thru hatchs. I have a question. Since the NJ has armored conning close to the windows, did the Missouri and Wisconsin which were built with the square bridge orginially as Iowa and New Jersey weren't improve on this by making the distance bigger? Also the teak wood in the deck was cut to 2 by 4's size of varing lenghts. Craig -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: RAN Colours, DD-21, JSF RAN Colours: They were looking at a style of blue, i have seen a Fremantle class patrol boat going thru SYdney Harbour from the office window in a sort of intermediate blue & i heard of another patrol boat in Darwin or WA was in a different colour & there was talk of maybe trying that out on a FFG DD-21: There has been talk of the DD-21 being passed over for some time. The Arleigh's will be extended for some time till a new class takes over. As for easiest model you can try to build an arsenal ship, all that was going to be was a lookalike tanker with a DD-21 style bridge & something like 150 - 200 vertical launching bays for the missiles & no guns. JSF: well at least the new JSf looks like a plane so congrats to L-martin x-35 team, now just to see how long till it gets in the front service with any infighting, squabling or techno problems. Bad luck to Boeing, but nice to see someone else win for a change & finally the US forces can mix & match weapons, cuz i saw in some military mag or was told by some navy person that Airforce sidewinders cant be used on navy machines & vise-versa, thats how different each section wanted to be! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: GGeGratz@aol.com Subject: Novgorod colors Some time ago, in the yahoo ironclads group, the comments about Novgorod painting scheme are that she was grey painted for the most time of her life. It was based in photos, some displayed there. L. Sto. R.N.V.R." Might that example be interpreted as "Acting Leading Stoker, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve"? Therefore anyone who would like a set can send me a self addressed envelope, plus either $1 in cash or an IRC to cover return postage. Others are in the works along with pennant numbers.
