Lee" Subject: Book query I have a brief query. Could anyone tell me which ships are represented in the following volume: BRITISH WARSHIPS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR By John Roberts I notice it has recently been reprinted and was curious as to its contents? Specifically what, if any, cruisers are detailed. I figure the hull and deck would be the best starting point, with a scratchbuilt or kitbashed island. << Were I you I'd consider starting from the Italeri USS America kit. The JFK, while having some significant differences, is probably closer to the America than any other carrier that's been kitted. Its island might also be a closer starting point for JFK, although you'll most likely have to throw away much of the aft half of the kit island since JFK's is much cleaner-looking than America's cluttered island. I've struggled with the Italeri kit that purports to be the Kitty Hawk and I still have no idea just what that kit might be useful for, as it looks nothing like any carrier I've ever seen. I'd also suggest picking up two things: a copy of Bert Kinzey's Detail and Scale book about the JFK, and one of Monogram's 1/800 kits of the JFK (released at various times as Kitty Hawk, Constellation and JFK). Although it's a very simple model it does capture the basic look of the JFK quite well, and it can guide you along. Also, do yourself a favor (not only for the JFK, but also for the Truman kit) and get the updated Gold Medal Models photoetched set for the supercarrier kits. I got one several months back, and was almost dumbstruck by how much in the way of goodies you get, applicable towards just about any carrier you care to build. Someday when I'm independently wealthy and have the money and time to toss towards such subjects, I'd love to do masters and produce a conversion kit to build the JFK from the 1/720 Italeri kits. I've wanted to do CV-67 for a long time. That and an update set for the Revell Enterprise, among other things. Someday, perhaps. I would be interested in joining, and I think there are more SMMLies who would be interested. Speaking from experience, as I was a Junior Stoker R.N.V.R. with London Division 1955-56 when I was called up for N/S. No medals for me though. (Later). Doesn't stop me from collecting them, but I will need to prove a lot of actuaries wrong by living well beyond the average in order to get them finished. I can still convince myself that I am a modeller and not a collector because I always open the boxes and only buy subjects I would like to build, not those which are just rare (and sometimes terrible models). Robert Lockie Swindon UK -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "hjbosma" Subject: crew Hello everybody, I have a somewhat strange problem: I am looking for a crew! I am building a kind of diorama depicting the "Soleil Royal" entering the port of St Rochelle (Or whatever port of France) I need citizens and crew in the scale 1:87, 1: 96 or 1: 100. Not necessarily in the period costumes but at least suitable for conversion to that period. Any idea where I can find them????? Welcome every suggestion, plastic, white metal??? Thanks Hans Bosma -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: CAPTNWED@aol.com Subject: Hornet CV8 Hi All I recently found a BWN USS Hornet, CV8, at a Garage/Estate sale. I have checked the contents and everything seems to be present. I would sure appreciate any information about this kit. Is there anything that I need to address before starting this kit. Positive comments? Negative comments etc? Is there any recommended reference? I have Friedmans carrier book, The USS Hornet CV12 by Chuck Self. (Which has a small coverage of CV8) and the Encyclopedia of the Worlds Fighting Ships (Although the color plate may be suspect regarding detail placement) Any information you might be able to give will be deeply appreciated. TIA John -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Ives100@aol.com Subject: Re: US submarine paint schemes >> Still thinking of building my 1/700 sub kits in 3D diorama,so many kits at home which ones the build for end of year comps arrggh so many ideas & thoughts, now going thru some web sites for the under the waterline, some show black hulls & some show dull red hulls..my hunch would be dull red hulls. & as for colour scheme there is the 2 tone blue with black & also pale blue with black top sides & there was overall black..so remember im building the Gato which could double as the Balao & maybe the trench class << The hulls of WWII US submarines were black below the waterline. The red is incorrect. The all black topside was early in the war, after 1944 there was a light gray fading to dark gray fading to black (Bow to stern) and a dark gray to darker gray to black (MS32). Decks and othe topside surfaces were black. There was no blue. If you are using the Skywave 1/700, there is a photoetch set that adds to the kits immensely. You need to rshape the conning tower at the front and lose the pyramid -like steps on the side of the conning tower. You will need to more drastically reshape and cut down the conning tower for Balao or Tench classes. Also there is a good close-up photo of a 3"23cal in the book "Pearl Harbor: The Original Photographs" D. Goldstein (p.23). I have seen several auxiliaries (early war) equipped with this mount. Jerry Phillips -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Subject: WSW A-001 Handelsschiffset / Merchant Ship Set Hi Some days ago a listmember asks for the new Merchant Ship Set from WSW. The set includes a oiler, a freighter and two harbor tugs. These are not german types as I hoped too and are not really new, except the tugs. The Oiler and the Freighter are two of the first models from DOC-Models now named WSW. I think that now all DOC models are again available from WSW. The Oiler is the french Salome. There is no difference to the DOC model (I have both). The number of pieces and the layout has not changed. The same is with the Freighter. It is the british Nora, a small freighter. But this time the airvents are molded with the hull. How can this be done? So you don't have to think much about their position. Both models are not so detailed as the newest kits from WSW, but for me it is ok, because there are not many civil kits around in 1/700. The small tugs are new, identical and molded in one piece, no additional parts for them. The plan is simple with oiler and tanker on one side. There is no text with additional information, though it was in the kits from DOC. I hope this helps and if more information is wanted, contact me offlist. I expect test shots in December. Check the Website for information on each SIMS kit. Three different kits will be done, each with around 100 parts, in a total of five different fits. This should be the definitive SIMS kit in 1:700 scale. You won't be disappointed with this one! Reservations are being accepted now, and NNT will be stocking the kits for you folks in Europe. The 1:700 KIROV(1980) just needs brass and decal designs and it is scheduled for production in the Spring. I haven't forgotten the ALGERIE and EMILE BERTIN. The latter must be totally redone, thanks to a major brain cramp I had when designing the old one five years ago. The masters for the 1:700 British WW1 subject are complete, but I don't know exactly when I'll work them into the schedule. Next project is the complete and total reworking of the LE HARDI destroyer master for metal production, greater accuracy and more completeness. Two versions, the LE HARDI as designed and the MAMELUK in 1941 are planned at this moment. The product listing on the Website is firm, but when production will actually occur of each item is subject to revision, as are some prices of forthcoming kits.
