This is enormous and will probably give you what you want << Yes, in fact the unpainted sets are much less expensive. Three that have great figures for our needs are #16326 120 working figures, #16325 120 railroad figures, and #16335 30 warehouse handlers and drivers. Quite a few figures in all these sets are easily made into sailors. For the civilian dock figures you can use the same sets plus #16337 120 Passenger figures and #16343 130 standing pedestrians. Cheers, Bob Santos -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Francisco Javier Chaves Salarrullana" Subject: Life expectancy, unbulit models, available storage space and shelf for built models... Hello all. Bob said: >> I simply went on the Internet (http://www.liveforever.com) and adjusted my life expectancy to 175 years. (grin) << And I say: HEEEEEEELP! I think adjusting my life expectancy to 250 years or more wouldn't do anything, as decals would be brown-yellow, I'd have a huge collection of "classic" paint tinlets added to the always growing unbuilt kit collection (with the ever growing "catalog news" for all the years ... of course), expanded to "classic" space ships, thousands of self made paint chips of all makes, etc, etc... And I still had very little free time to build anything, maybe two or three models a year. Add to it the free space needed to keep them free of sunlight, humidity, sudden temp changes. By then in cubic feet, or cubic meters instead of feet or meters of shelves (now we have another dimension). And we will start adding notes to those finished kits, just as "finished in Aug 2018 after five years of research, one of planning, two and a half looking for that P.E., and three months of bench work. Paint trials were ended satisfactorily with no yellowing appreciable in a two year period...." That may indicate a new shelf for built models plus wall space for that plate. And it's true, beacuse these days I'm cleaning my shelves thinking about moveng maybe next year, and I'm petrified. I'm thinking about selling (cleaning) part of those kits I'm sure I will never put together, and that now they stand just like a brick wall, carefully piled. I really enjoy this hobby and do my best to promote it where I live, but sometimes I need to refresh. these days I'm building an old linberg 1/300 U.S.S. DeLong DDE (now painting), and a Heller 1/400 Graff Spee (Also painting after a year or so in "dry dock") plus several 1/72 planes. Must say that I manage to finish about five models per year, so... Regards from windy Zaragoza. P.S.: Does anybody knows an aircraft model list where I can send a message to sell my "cleaned" airplanes? Thanks. P.P.S.: Yesterday I got an old Airfix 1/600 Scharnhorst -(8-) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Boatbldr Subject: Warning - Preiser Figures Just a friendly word of warning about Preiser. I have had some stuff on order with them for many months now and have yet to see it. I have queried the hobby store owner (and a number of others to confirm the story wasn't false) and Preiser supposedly has a "we will send it when we send it" customer service attitude. One store owner remembers a year long response time once to fulfill an order. When they asked Preiser why they had this attitude towards fulfilling orders at a trade show, they apparently just shrugged their shoulders. If your local store doesn't actually stock it, you may wait a long, long, long time. In their favour though - they are Styrene (not vinyl), so it doesn't decompose on you while you are working with it, and they have many scales to choose from. regards Boatbldr -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Jim Kloek" Subject: 1/700 Nagato Pavel, I have built the resin Nagato, and it is a beautiful kit. I used the GMM photoetch fret for IJN battleships. There are photos of it in the Model Gallery of the STeelnavy site, and you can get a good look at what the built up model looks like. I have not seen the new Aoshima kit in person, but in pictures of the unbuilt parts I have seen on the web, it looks to be very similar to the resin kit. It may well be a bargain, but you won't be disappointed with the resin kit. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: annobon4@aol.com Subject: 1/700 Iowa class BB Hi Guys Thru Pacific Front Hobbies link to Pitroad Skywave I looked around for the new biggie coming from. A guy said he noticed something before on their website but it's in Japanesee. Well it's # is M-16 (Modern Series)-1/700 scale 1980's IOWA class battleship. I wonder how much this monster will cost? Just look at those 1/700 scale Kitty Hawk Carriers by Fujimi they're about $90.00 each USD. Thought I'd share this with you. Budzbon's "Soviet Navy at War: 1941-1945" has an interesting picture of TK106, a G5 which mounted a Katyusha rocket launcher. I just happen to have one in 1/72 scale and thought about modeling this boat. Can anyone on the list provide any information sources concerning the G5, particularly those with the rocket launchers installed? Budzbon mentions that the torpedo wells were plated over, but no other details. Matt Prager -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Chris & Lulu Langtree" Subject: Nagato and French books Hi Pavel I have the re-tooled Aoshima Nagato and very impressive it is too. I compared it with the photos of the parts in review of the Hi-Mold Nagato (www.steelnavy.com) and it seemed to hold its own very well. I would say that there is very little to choose between them and it comes down to taste and inclination. In my own personal opinion I would not spend the money on the Hi-Mold kit with the Aoshima version available. The differences just do not justify the extra expense when a fine model can be created from the Aoshima kit as well. Toms do an excellent photo-etch set for Japanese battleships (No.2) which includes parts for the Nagato and you would need this for both the Hi-Mold and the Aoshima kit. The French book on Dunkerque and Strasbourg is available from Marines Editions. It is soft cover and can be bought individually (260 FFr) or as part of a boxed set with books on Jean Bart and Richelieu (498.53 FFr). These are reprints of the old Robert Dumas series. Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Infomation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Subject: A birds eye review Hi You all I have just returned from the IPMS at Telford, where I met a small number of fellow smellies, including Les Brown and those on the White Ensign stand. On display at the Revelle stand was the much requested German S-100 Schnellboot or E-Boat kit. A first off prototype put together in Korea, and a look see at the mouldings on a sprue. These were indeed very fine still on their runners and moulded in a metallic black plastic. I would bet that the mould was chrome plated. The completed prototype sample was spinning slowly on a display stand. The detail was very sharp. It was almost as though it were finished as a cast resin kit. I forgot to take a picture, but on first viewing it is first class, a great step in the right direction. My only, small criticism is that the moulded guard rails are a tad too thick. The moulded 2 cm gun barrels are very well done though. The best yet though, the price. I was shown the printed price list and it is an unbelievable £13.99. Buy as many as you can as I bet in a years time the price will increase - upwards. I assume that it will be ready for distribution by Christmas, in time for those stockings. No doubt other smellies will report in. (But you saw it here first) Yours "Aye" John Lambert -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Vern Wilson" Subject: Books for sale Hello all, I some books for sale.
