I'm thinking about using my inkjet printer to do them. I have an Epson Stylus Color 670 printer, it can print at high resolutions, I'm very satisfied with it's output on high quality paper, but I don't know if it will work at all with blank decal sheets. Blank decal sheets are expensive, and I can find them only on the internet (no local stores carrying them). And worse: I have found no on-line store that guarantees that their decal sheets will work properly with inkjet printers, so I'm afraid to "blindly" buy those expensive sheets, and them noticing that they are not compatible with my printer. So, any tips, stores and/or brand recomendations would be very welcome! Thanks a lot! Eduardo -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject: Paint adherence to brass This is a request for help in making model paint adhere to brass. I am working with 0.010" and with 0.025" brass rod stock (that's about .3 and .6 mm to you in the more progressive countries). Would using fine sandpaper to roughen the surface be of any help? Would this cause a problem when soldering prior to painting? Any and all comments will be appreciated. Thank you. At the moment I have both the Aoshima and the High Mold Kit I am trying to swapp my High mold kit for a high mold Yamashiro or Fuso. (I pay the expenses of sending them over) Because there is no other high quality plastic kit available of those ships. So my advice is: Buy Aoshima! All the best Hans -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: US Submarine Paint Schemes >> The hulls of WWII US submarines were black below the waterline. The red is incorrect. << Ah, be careful of generalizations. There is a fine coluor photo of a US fleet boat being launched in the new book, "Battlestations!", which shows her painted in Measure 9, overall black--and she has a red underwater hull. Does anyone know of the eventual release date of these? << While I can't tell you the date of the release of these paints, I CAN comment on the report in FSM in which Testors claims these paints were developed in consultation with Snyder & Short. The "consultation" consisted of Testors contacting Randy Short to inform him that they were going to release a line of paints based on the S&S chips. That's not consultation in my book, and I will be forwarding a letter of clarification to FSM in that regard. It was simply a large company telling a small firm what whas going to happen. This situation is similar to Model Expo's line of paints, which they developed after buying one each of our paint chip sets and informing us that they were going to do so. To give credit to Model Expo, they later also added our paint chip sets to their stock. The ONLY line of paints developed in consultation with, and direct involvement of, Snyder & Short is the White Ensign Models "Colourcoats" line. Budzbon's "Soviet Navy at War: 1941-1945" has an interesting picture of TK106, a G5 which mounted a Katyusha rocket launcher. I just happen to have one in 1/72 scale and thought about modeling this boat. Can anyone on the list provide any information sources concerning the G5, particularly those with the rocket launchers installed? Budzbon mentions that the torpedo wells were plated over, but no other details. << Matt, Go to a web site www.armybooks.com and search thru it for the different publishers carried and you will find a really good book on the G5 torpedo boats. This is one of the best books out of Russia I have ever seen, and I have seen a few. All the drawings contained within are some of the best around and the photo reproduction is overall good, which is amazing for a Russian book. Cost was about $12 plus $12 for shipping, so you may want to look thru the web site and add other items to make that $12 shipping more economical. Good luck, Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Jana & Pavel" Subject: Matsu, Nagato and French Books Dear SMML'ies, Thank you to all that responded to my questions, both on and off line. I now know where to buy the reference books on the Dunkerque and Strasbourg. I will also be going with the Aoshima kits. Regards Pavel -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Stephen Long" Subject: Trumpeter 1/350 USS Enterprise At the IPMS show in Telford held last weekend, White Ensign was displaying 2, 1/350 USS Enterprise kits from Trumpeter, one appeared to be the same as the Tamiya kit, the other showed the Enterprise with the 'Beehive' radar. Does anyone know the origin of these kits? Are they Chinese versions of the Tamiya kits? Has anyone reviewed the kits? Steve -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Bruno Gire" Subject: Trumpeter kits Hi all! I'd like to get the impression from those who obtained a Trumpeter kit. I've read all the very promising comm. in this list, but last week I first discovered the Trumpeter 1/500 USS Nimitz kit in my local shop. I've been allowed to open the box to have a look inside, but the least I can say is I've been very disappointed. The motor is in place (no interesting work to do there), but first I've been disappointed by the injected moldings: parts are thick (especially the planes wings), lack of details, not as numerous as one would expect from a kit this scale, etc... Looking at the parts and at the assembly leaflet, I found them even far inferior to the Italeri 1/720 kits for more than twice the price. Are the comming Trumpeter better? Photos of the Sovremenny show a far better work, so I suspect the Nimitz is an older one? Is that true for the other 1/500 kits? Could I have a quick list of good (detailed) kits and the other ones which are definitely not worth their price? It is a very nice kit, especially considering its age. The kit is full-hulled and very complete. The only addition needed is the ship's railings. HTH, Tomt. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: ALROSS2@aol.com Subject: Re: Soviet G5 Torpedo Boats >> Matthew Prager wrote about the Soviet G-5 torpedo-boats that carried a Katyushka M-8 or M-13 rocket launchers << In "Warship" bound volume 2, Przemyslaw Budzbon published an article on the G-5 MTB that mentions several rocket launcher configurations. According to the article, TKA 86 was the first G-5 armed with missiles. A twelve-missile rail for ROFS-82 missiles was mounted in 1942. In 1943, about 20 G-5s were configured with one launcher consisting of six double rails for the ROFS 132 missile. He notes "...Twelve missiles could be carried and there is no evidence of the carriage of reloads nor of the possibility of reloading at sea. The launchers were fixed in traverse and therefore aimed by handling the whole boat, while the angle was adjusted by a hand operated device..." (p. 240). There is a profile drawing of the latter configuration that suggests the torpedo troughs were not covered. Howeveer, an angular "turret" with a scarf ring was mounted over the forward end of the troughs, covering the warheads. There is a short article on the G-5 with a profile of a rocket-armed version in (what I think is) the August 1986 issue of "Modelist Constructor", a Russian-language model magazine. The Polish-language "Modelarz" magazine ran several articles on Soviet MTBs during the mid to late 1980s and may have covered the G-5. One issue I have (4/86) contains an article with very detailed drawings of the D-3 type MTB. Another article on the G-5 appears in the German-language "Modelbau Heute", 4/76. I only have one page, but it has a general arrangement plan of what appears to be a series 11 G-5, along with a couple photos of a nicely-done model. It would appear the message is if you can find them in stock somewhere, then snap them up. They are invariably stocked by model railway type shops - it goes hand in hand with all the other accessories for model railways. Sydney (Australia) has a small selection available at www.hobbyco.com.au I've just noticed. 1:50 and 1:100. Postage SHOULD be cheap as they're not exactly bulky! As good as it is--and it's good--it's going to get better. Peter Hall has one in hand now and will have a dedicated photoetch set "by Christmas." You'll want to add this! We also saw the Revell 1/72 S-100 on display at Telford, and heartily concur with John Lambert's comments; it's a beauty! Revell is saying January for release. In the meantime, they'll be sending a test shot to Peter Hall and we'll have a photoetch set ready and waiting for it. We've already taken reservations for 2 sets....
