"As built" would be fun, with those tall radio aerial masts. I asked IS if I could purchase extra 6" casemates, but didn't get a reply. I guess I'll have to carve or cast my own copies. (For that model only!) It couldn't hurt to ask them yourself, though. As for SMML posting being in down in number, I noticed that, too, but these things are cyclical. Joe Poutre -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Ken Goldman" Subject: Re: wooden decks There are many techniques for making decks that range from actually laminating strips of wood to using prescribed Evergreen plastic sheet (if you can find the appropriate - or very close - spacing) and applying them atop the model deck. Unfortunately, in 1:700 and 1"350 scales, the added deck height can be a problem, then again you have to remove and reapply any other molded deck detailing. What I did on my Revell Olympia was to carefully sand the plastic deck with #80 sandpaper parallel to the ship's centerline. The resulting scratches nicely simulated planking. To pull this off successfully, be prepared to make an assortment of sanding tools to fit the nooks and crannies by gluing bits of sandpaper onto wood sticks or scrap metal. Old metal garden rake tines that have broken off make excellent sanding sticks with sandpaper attached with rubber cement. Even with this technique, one will likely have to repair or replace some other detailing. Once I had sanded the deck, I painted it overall with a light maple syrup color (tan) and then dry brushed and rubbed it with RLM gray and a bit more of the tan color until I got the effect I wanted. A little burnt umber in the mix will give some darker streaks. Note that this does take a bit of practice to get it right. Complete with lines and body plan, general arrangement drawing, table of offsets, lots and lots of photos and a list of bibliography and other sources available. For anyone wanting to build a model I would say that it is all there. I will forward all informatoion to my friend´s father-in-law and we´ll see what comes out of this ;-) I guess that Mr. Kayser´s tip re the Scheurer/Struver card-kit will lead to some serious scratchbuilding on my part :) Cutting p/e: Those of you that are familiar with ´The Small Shop´s Hold&Fold-tool might be interested to hear that he now offers a cutting set made from three anodized aluminum ´cutting plates´ and a clear acrylic holder which helps keeping the parts trapped that you want to cut/separate. No more feeding the carpet monster, I´m afraid ;-) I bought mine direct from Pete two weeks ago for around six or seven bucks and really wouldn´t wanna miss it anymore. If anyone´s interested, mail me direct and I´ll send you a scan of the description/instructions. Turned barrels for 1/350th/1/700th scale guns Does anyone make those? I faintly recall reading something to that accord in SMML 2xx/3xx/4xx or something but can´t for the life of me find it again. Would be interested to hear if someone does those and whether anyone has used them, if available. Hi you all I have decided that I'm getting old! I have just spent almost a week drawing the Mark V** destroyer rangefinder, as found aboard our "O" and "P" class DD's. Working all hours. I completed it last Monday, then checked. I had drawn exactly the same thing, from the same originals over four years ago. Anyone like to buy a virgin original on draughting film? Now the serious bit. Do any of you vast and knowledgeable crowd know where I can find shipbuilders drawings of HMS Walney (ex USS Sebago) one of the Ex-American Coastguard cutters, lost in November 1942, or G/A drawings of any of the Colony class American built frigates. As a final shot. Nothing has been heard from Conway yet about C/F Volume 3. John Lambert -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: ZMzimmerman@cs.com Subject: Graf Zeppelin and Aquila My personal opinion is their affect would have been minor at best, except for giving the British a chance to sink a carrier. The airgroups would have been to small with little ability to absorb combat or operational attrition. Also by that time the US, British and Japanese fleets had 20 years to develop skills and doctrine. They each might have executed one good operation before being lost or bottled up in port but I doubt more than that given how those fleets where used. Michael Zimmerman -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Kevin Surjan" Subject: Painting PE Hello all, A simple question I suppose but if a ship is painted in say Measure 31 or 32 how would you paint the PE railings. Would you still paint them all one colour (say grey) or would you follow the pattern. John -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: AAA Hobby Subject: Oklahoma Planes In April 1941, OKLAHOMA was part of BatDiv2, and as such was assigned aircraft from VO-2., specifically 3 OS2U-1 Kingfishers. At Pearl harbor, she had transferred to BatDiv1 and VO-1. Being listed third in each division, her aircraft numbers would have been: 1-O-7 1-O-8 1-O-9 On 30DEC40, BuAer ordered the repainting of all ship based aircraft into an overall Nonspectacular Light Gray (A/N 602 ... now known as Lt Gull Gray FS36440) scheme. This was changed on August 20, 1941 to the more familiar Blue-Gray over Gray scheme for CARRIER aircraft only. On October 13, 1941, the new scheme was ordered applied to all fleet aircraft, afloat and ashore. In Sept. 1941, the appropriate scheme would be overall NS Light Gray, with 6 prewar star roundels, 3" white serials and "NAVY" on the tail, and the 18" side numerals in white, with the ships name in 4" letters behind (tailward) of the aftermost numeral. Photos of this scheme must be extremely rare, as the vaunted "Battleship and Cruiser Aircraft..." did not vield a single photo of a Kingfisher in the overall gray scheme, but it does show several SOCs in the sceme giving an idea of the look. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Friedrich Kappes Subject: Kamoi, Japenese aircraft tender When looked Kamoi like on these drawings? http://picpage7.tripod.com/kamoi.html Friedrich The FriedrichFiles http://www.geocities.com/friedkappes/flagship.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at: http://smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at: http://apma.org.au/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
