It is so seldom that we see a new large-scale surface ship. Has anyone bought or built one of these? I know that the Burza was based on a French contre-torpellier (sp?). I have been impressed with their models of the Grom and Blyskiwica, so I am looking forward to buying and building these two as well. John Emery -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Joel Labow Subject: The Mk 32 AWTT as Potato Projector Back in the late 60s in Newport, RI in a ship in my squadron one of the wardroom stewards fell into the habit of using an empty tube in the triple AWTT mount to keep his ready supply of potatos (the mount being situated right outboard of the WR pantry). Unaware of these creative stowage arrangements, when it came time for the monthly preventive maintenance check on the mount the torpedoman duly did his thing, culminating with firing a 1500 psi air slug from the 'empty' tube. As you may imagine, the sack of potatoes emerged at high velocity and, being the vegetable equivalent of old-fashioned grapeshot, laid waste to an office on the adjacent pier. The PMS cards were duly modified to include a bore check of the tube before firing an air slug and the TM became a local hero for his devastating assault on the 'shore duty puke' community. And for those of you who know the difference between a sea story and a fairy tale, this one is no s#*t! Joel Labow -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Floyd Whitney Subject: Re: F1M2 (Pete) Japanese Floatplane Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War by Rene J. Francillon has a good section on this aircraft, complete with some photos. It may still be available from the USNI Press. Otherwise, a good university library or a used bookseller may have it. Floyd Whitney Chapel Hill, NC -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Chris & Lulu Langtree" Subject: F1M2 Hi Evangelos If you can get hold of the Bunrin-Do Co Publication Famous Airplanes of the World (Hannants did stock it) No. 47, Imperial Japanese Navy Reconnassance Seaplanes. Text is in Japanese but there are a lot of photos of F1M2s together with colour profiles and a good set of plans which also show the internal structure of the plane. Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: SantMin@aol.com Subject: Re: USS OREGON One more of my comments on this kit is shot down!!!! I got an email from Yiannis Sagiadinos, the gentleman who makes this wonderful kit, and he told me he is correcting the upside down pilot house and will send me a new one. YOU CANNOT ASK FOR MORE THAN THAT !! The corrected one should be in all new kits. Cheers, Bob Santos -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Shirley Sachsen Subject: BB Oregon >> I would certainly recommend contacting the National Maritime Museum library in San Francisco, given that Oregon was built there. They should have photos, and perhaps other archival documents. << not only that, they have PLANS. they acquired the entire plan collection of Union Iron Works. I had the privilege of a tour of the facility during a maritime museum conference. they keep the plans in the original tubes on the original racks and only unroll them when there is a specific request. some of the sheets are over 20' long. needless to say, my archival professionalism was sorely tested in that library as I wanted to get my grubby mitts on the collections I saw there... s -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Matthew Prager" Subject: RG 1/72 S-100 Schnellboot Does anyone have any info on the availability of the Revell-Germany 1/72 S-100 Schnellboot kit? John, Actually, this response is largely about colour as I don't know anything about the Heller kit of Illustrious and how to model it... On the colour of the flight deck, I also prefer the grey-green rather than the dark grey. In discussions with Randy Short last year he mentioned that the evidence for a dark grey flight deck circa Taranto comes from veterans' recollections. This must be quite solid. On the other hand, the Warship Profile published in the 1970s shows the flight deck as dark grey-green at Taranto - perhaps it was painted this colour earlier in 1940? I dunno. Re the earlier message on more information in general about Illustrious, her sisters and her half-sisters, I believe that Alan Raven via WR Press was planning a book specifically on the class. He is the man with all the answers, or at least all the answers accessible to systematic reseach. I don't whether that project is still going ahead as the class is well-covered in his RN series. There's always room for more detail, though! For example, he drops a cryptic hint way back in SMML655 about Indomitable in 1945. Although there is no official documentation, the ship was for a while painted partially in USN colours with a mixture of yellow and white flight deck markings (depending on function). Chris Burton -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Lkjohnson214@aol.com Subject: Re: F1M1 Pete Hi Your best bet, if you can find it is the Osprey publication "Imperial Japanese Navy Aces" by Henry Sakaida. There is a 1/72 scale side profile in color of an F1M1 from HIJMS CHITOSE. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Ken Goldman" Subject: Re: FIM2 (PETE) Japanese floatplane A great place to start when researching Japanese aircraft is JAPANESE AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE & CHARACTERISTICS by Edward T. Regards Les Brown -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: Richard Sweeney Subject: Skytrex Meridian Line Hello, I have seen The Skytrex "U.S.S. Constitution", and the "H.M.S. Victory" built up and they are absolutely Beautiful. It must be remembered that the "U.S.S. Constitution" represents her configuration up too her Battle with "H.M.S. Java", also you would have to remove her stern lantern, as She never carried one. But I'm sure that she could be updated to her current configuration, and with a couple of 1/700th scale modern destroyers...Well... I can also picture a great model of the Portsmouth Dockyard, with "H.M.S. Victory" as the center piece, of course you would need to build a lower hull for her as she's in drydock. You might also take into consideration that they also offer the Spanish Man-of-War "Santisima Trinidad", Who can resist a Man-of-War of 130 guns?? I would recommend these beautiful ship kits to anyone. My two cents worth. Richard Sweeney -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: GKingzett@aol.com Subject: Re: USS Oregon John Snyder suggested any person looking for good info on the Oregon contact the National Maritime Museum in San Francisco. They do have a model of Oregon on display there, but they didn't have any other detailed information when I tried there several years ago. But, excellent drawings including hull lines and enlarged details are available. Union Iron Works in San Francisco built the Oregon. Union Iron Works was later acquired by and became part of Bethlehem Shipbuilding. Ultimately Bethlehem's archival material including drawings and photos were donated to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where they are in storage, uncataloged, I believe. So, original drawings and builders data are at MIT. Ed Neubauer researched all this some 40 years ago. He got his hands on the pertinent information directly from Bethlehem and produced a set of excellent drawings of the Oregon, specifically for model building. Ed is the curator of the Oregon Maritime Center and Museum, 113 Naito Parkway, Portland, OR. The drawings are available from them at very reasonable cost. For anyone who wants to build an Oregon, or wants to improve the Glencoe model, or just look at some good draftsmanship, I recommend these drawings most highly. I think Tom's Model Works used these drawings as the basis for their Oregon photo etch, also. All of them looked a bit like kit-bashed from the old Skywave kit of the German Narvik-Class destroyers and didn't show much details. But this was some time ago, and I might be wrong. Thanks to EVERYONE who went to the new site for all the kind words. A few folks complained about not being able to view some the pages with Netscape. My web master told me that since the site was built with the newest version program on the market, you will need to upgrade your browser (whatever that is) to the latest version. Most of the problems were with Netscape users. He experienced the same problems using an older Netscape version. When he moved to a different computer and loaded the latest version of Netscape, the site worked well. Hope this helps, and thanks for the suggestions. Anyway, everything works perfectly on my computer using Internet Explorer, so I hope this clears everything up. Rusty White Flagship Models Inc.
