Regards D.P -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Dave Judy Subject: Re: resin ship questions Gene, Call Don Preul, the last time I talked to him, he was thinking just that! I saw his 1/192 Baltimore hull.........Big!.......Expensive, but with his talent, worth it!! Dave Judy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Pletscher-Lenz-Schneider" Subject: HMS CAMPBELTOWN If you are looking for a model of HMS Campbeltown in her fitting for the St. Nazaire raid, there was a 1/700 model from Doc-Model which is now re-released by WSW or B-Resina (just don't know exactly which one of them did the Campbeltown). Falk Pletscher -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Rick Heinbaugh Subject: Re: HMS Vega Reference Material John Collins is looking for materials about V & W class boats. He was the Man 'o War #2 and March's British Destroyer books. Another great book is "V and W Class Destroyers 1917 - 1945" by Antony Preston, MacDonald, 1971. It is a hard-back book, primarily text, with 3 or 4 dozen photos smaller than those presented in Raven & Roberts book. And a book that sounds good but is nearly useless to the modeler is "The British Destroyer" by T.D. Manning, Putnam, 1961. It has a paragraph on each class and a single photo of a member of almost every class. :-) Rick -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Sanartjam@aol.com Subject: Re: North Cape December 1943 - HMS Jamaica As for HMS Jamaica, Skytrex has just come out with another Colony- (or Fiji-) class cruiser, the Kenya, in 1/700 scale. Speaking of which, has anyone seen this kit of the Kenya? Does anyone know if it's an early Kenya (which might facilitate doing an early Fiji, Trinidad or Mauritius!) or a later one? Art Nicholson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Sanartjam@aol.com Subject: Re: North Cape December 1943 - HMS Norfolk As for HMS Norfolk at North Cape, has anyone looked into the possibility of converting the Hi-Mold or WEM kits of the 1942 Sussex into a mid-war HMS Norfolk? At first glance, they don't look too different. According to Alan Raven's book on RN camouflage in 1942, the Norfolk sure had an interesting camo pattern in '42. I know Skytrex makes a 1/700 Norfolk, but it's more of an early-war fit. Art Nicholson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Pwesty" Subject: Trumpeter Does anyone know if Trumpeter models has a web site? Thanks -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: MMclau1079@aol.com Subject: Re: HMS. Vega Hi John, In regards to your question on additional books on this class of destroyers, check on the Advanced Book Exchange (abe.com) and you will find several copies of Anthony Preston's book entitled "V & W" class destroyers. Regards, Miles F. McLaughlin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: MMclau1079@aol.com Subject: Australian Warships Hi, Can anyone comment on the quality and detail of the ship illustrations and photographs from Ross Gillett's book entitled "Australian & New Zealand Warships 1914-1945"? Thanks, Miles Hi Miles, The range and scope of the photos is pretty damm good. With the exception of some wartime shots, the photos are very clear. Unfortunately they leave you wanting more of the same ;-) I HIGHLY recommend it. Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Darren Subject: Glue tip Demo >> I was fortunate to have a method for obtaining very small quantities of cyanoacrylate from a tube demonstrated to me by Darren Scannell at the UK IPMS Nats last year. << I have demonstrated this technique to several SMML members now and most have responded with near awe. The technique is extremely simple, and produces fantastic control to where CA is applied. Most of you will not have seen anything like it before. I have been asked to produce packs for sale, but I prefer that modelers be empowered to make there own. There is a company that produces similar tips in the US, but I can't remember the name. For those of you who do not wish to try it on their own before then, I will demonstrate the process again at the 2002 US Nat's in Virginia, complete with samples to take home and play with. I hope some enterprising local Virginian SMMLie (or member of the USA IPMS) sets up a meeting where several of us can put on small demos and share our knowledge at the show. Regards, Darren Scannell Ontario, Canada -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "John Barnum" Subject: Z28 Camouflage scheme With the release of the Narvik Class destroyer (Z28) next year by Airfix, I would like to paint her in her camouflage scheme. I have found two pictures of her , one in the book by M.J. Whitley "German Destroyers of WW2" and the other in the book by Garzke and Dulin "Battleships of WW2 Axis and Neutral powers." The first shows the ship in Norway with a painted bow wave and a two tone bridge screen. The second shows her with the Tirpitz , but the photo of her is not to clear. Has any one out there have any info. Many Thanks Happy Holidays to you All John Barnum -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Infomation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Leslie Brown" Subject: Airfix 2002 Releases With all this talk about the forthcoming re-releases by Airfix of a number of their destroyers and, in particular, the mentions of HMS Campbeltown, I thought it might be appropriate to mention that the next update (due end of December/early January) of the UK IPMS Small Warships SIG website (www.brown.abelgratis.co.uk) will cover this particular vessel and two models of her (at least I hope they will be complete in time!). One model is of her in her 'two-funnel' configuration as during the raid on St Nazaire (using the Toms Modelworks 1:350 kit) and the other is of her carrying out convoy escort duties (with three and a half funnels - yes that is correct, the aft one having been reduced in height) just prior to this (using the B-Resina 1:700 scale kit of HMS Burwell). I still have my original Airfix 1:600 scale (priced at 38 pence!) and the Revell 1:240 scale kits to assemble once I have decided what arrangement/colour scheme to produce them in. One of these will certainly be as in USN service (i.e. USS Buchanan) just prior to hand over to the Royal Navy - hence my recent question on the listing regarding colour scheme.
