The technique is extremely simple, and produces fantastic control to where CA is applied. Most of you will not have seen anything like it before. I have been asked to produce packs for sale, but I prefer that modelers be empowered to make there own. There is a company that produces similar tips in the US, but I can't remember the name. << Is that basically the use of a sewing needle stuck into the end of a dowel, with the end of the eye cut off to achieve a small "Y: at the end of the needle?? Regards, Bradford Chaucer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Ken Goldman" Subject: St. Nazaire raid With all the recent talk of HMS Campbeltown and her "disguise" for the St. Nazaire raid, does anyone have or know where to find good drawings and photographs of what the drydock installation looked like before Campbeltown ran up on the gates? The photo taken after the ramming but before she exploded is all I have been able to find so far. I see these 2 Italian WWII ships for sale in the Squadron monthlys from time to time. I notice that they are offered with...or without PE. What is the quality/accuracy? Thanks in advance for any imput. Please respond to my e-mail address. Regards, Ray Mehlberger -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Michael London" Subject: Re: V&W Class Destroyers Further to recent postings regarding the excellent book by Antony Preston, "V and W Class Destroyers 1917-1945", it contains a number of plans useful to the model builder. Ships covered are BROKE (Shakespeare Class leader), VISCOUNT (Thornycroft 'V' Class), WOLFHOUND ('W' Class), and VETERAN (Modified 'W' Class), all as built. In addition there are basic plans showing WW 2 conversions of VANITY as a "Wair (AA escort), WIVERN as East Coast convoy escort, and an unnamed LRE (Long range escort). There is also some limited camo info. Michael London -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: NEVENGER@aol.com Subject: Trumpeter Say I was wondering if Trumpeter has a web site that the average person can go to??? Rich -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: future sub design yeah I couldn't picture a large boomer or attack class sub with a whale or shark tail, especially being chased by a future torpedo, maybe it will be more for recreational use or small subs like in Seaquest for the kid, who knows maybe next they will be experimenting with Gungdon (spelling?)Star wars 1 whilring tails or maybe looking at the "jet" funtion of a "Red October", but my opinion is that i think we wont see any design changes yet for propulsion for many many many years, maybe when the SMML reaches Volume 1,000,000 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: NEVENGER@aol.com Subject: 1/350 Essex (ICM or TRUMPETER) All I can say is if Trumpeter does good job on the Essex, Hornet, and Yorktown is that ICM has blown it on the carriers. In fact if Trumpeter does a good job on the flight deck, hull, and tower I will be OK with it. I am pretty sure if they screw up on the planes and guns I should be able to get good quality on these from a 2nd source as in some of the people on this posting. So any ideas when I can see these 1/350 Trumpeter aircraft carriers on the shelf??? Please understand that I have 2 of the ICM Konigs, but one can only wait so long (you try having the money just sitting on the shelf for over a year in an envelope titled ICM Hood). Rich -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Edd Pflum Subject: Re: E-6 Sets Bill wrote: >> don't understand why they discontinue these offerings. If there is not "much demand" for these kits then cut back in supply but not cut off. << Although not an "insider", I believe I can supply the answer. Kit producers do not have enough molding machines to have every kit in production continuously. The molds are "setup" in the molding machines and a run of, say 5,000 parts sets is made. (I have no idea what the actual numbers are, and I'm sure they vary.) If a kit is a slow seller, this stock lasts a long time. When it is gone, the manufacturer faces the decision of re-issuing or discontinuing the kit. On a slow seller, the capital costs of setup, production, boxes, decals, etc. (all up-front costs), will be a long time being recouped. New kits and better sellers offer a better investment, so production time is devoted to them. Later, if there is "pent-up" demand, the kit may be re-issued, or possibly the molds re-worked to a more marketable form. Usually, the molds, being a large investment, are stored, so there is always hope. IMO, nothing to write home about, but several friends have convinced me to put it up. As part of this there's a small blurb about which BATDIV each ship belonged to. While trying to get caught up in reading my SMMLs, I noticed someone here mentioned that the Oklahoma belonged to BATDIV1. Well, hmm, errr, uh, this is what I have (pulled off a factsheet from warships1.com). Is it correct before I put this thing up? BATDIV1: Arizona, Pennsylvania, Nevada BATDIV2: California, Tennessee, Oklahoma BATDIV4: Maryland, West Virginia If there's any webmasters here who have pages dedicated to these ships, let me know and I'll add them. The main links I've included thus far are to the official/crew association sites. The only two that don't have such a site are the Tennessee and California. Heh...guess it's time for me to start work on my unofficial California site I've been contemplating. Or, at least that's what everyone keeps telling me I should do. In addition, there's links to the DANFS entries for each ship. I'm trying to only include direct links to pages that feature each ship, which some webmasters may not like, but it's a way for visitors to direct access information on the ships they may be interested in. Right now I'm still fighting code bugs (the images don't line up properly per some friend's reports), so I have time to gather the link information. I recently ordered the Trumpeter 1:700 Arizona, figuring it might be better than the old Revell 1:720. Any opinions on this kit thus far? For that matter, is anyone producing any brass for the kit, or is it going to be "use the standard 1:700 fare" Regarding the recent discussions about the Oriskany; check out the Tonkin Gulf Yacht club site. The have a message board that some of the former crewmembers use for exchanging scuttlebutt. Some of them are keeping up with. http://www.geocities.com/~wdn/ Derek Wakefield -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at: http://smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at: http://apma.org.au/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
