Is there a PE kit for it? << If it's the kit I've seen on the shelves of late, it's as modernized. Revell/Ceji issued this kit in the mid/late-80s as the New Jersey and Iowa with extremely impressive and inspiring box art. (Also, wasn't our own Loren Perry involved in the updating for the kit? I seem to recall reading something in SSM about that.) The Revell Iowas (both modernized and WWII fit) are generally good kits, but they can be a bear to assemble -- the one-piece main deck can be awful flimsy, and I could never get the deck and superstructure to mate cleanly. It has more surface detail on bulkheads and stuff than the Tamiya kit. It seems to try to do more than the Tamiya, and as a result it requires more elbow grease. OTOH, you don't have to worry about the seams in the Tamiya three-piece deck, so it's a case of pick your poison. :) Revell issued a WWII version of the Iowa-class ships as the USS Missouri in the late 1980s. I had, and butchered, both. I liked the WWII version because the deck didn't have recesses for the 40mm and 20mm gun tubs -- the deck was basically clean, so you could build virtually any pre-'80s Iowa from it without doing lots of deck work. That's nice for geeks like me who love the '50s and '60s Navy. As for photo-etch, any of the 1:350 sets for modernized BB-61-class ships should work nicely. jodie -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Ken Goldman" Subject: Re: St. Nazaire Raid Thanks to all of you who responded to my request for photos of the St. Nazaire Raid. Yesterday, I went out and purchased ST. NAZAIRE COMMANDO. Especial thanks to Richard Prescott who turned me on to the website which has a photo of the briefing model in the Imperial War Museum. It's a good item to add to my list of reasons to return to London - not that I needed another excuse. Now I am that much closer to building a 1:350 diorama of Campbeltown just before she exploded. Visit http://www.paperlab.com/models.html http://www.paperlab.com/3d.html http://www.paperlab.com/store.html http://www.paperlab.com/archives.html click MODELS at side of screen The WW 2 Submarine Chaser model that attracted me is listed at $6.00 plus S&H for a CD for printing a cut-out (I think) of SC1029. I have absolutely no vested interest in this source or its product, I merely pass on a lead. I didn't get one, as my interest is focused on WW 1 Sub Chasers only. Franklyn -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Matthew Prager" Subject: USS MONITOR/CSS VIRGINIA I thought I'd take a brake from the normal "research a subject to death before you build it" mode and build something out of the box. The Lindberg Monitor/Virginia set seemed like a good candidate - nothing fancy, just build it for the enjoyment. WRONG!! I've already started working out what to change, what to add, etc. (although I am trying to restrain myself). I haven't built any American Civil War steam/sail vessels before, and I don't know how they preserved the hulls. Were they painted with red lead? Were they copper shealthed? I'm sure someone can help me out. I just would like to fairly accurate - not real nitpicky - but then again I could change... Is there a PE kit for it? << I have one of these on my "to be completed" pile. The kit portrays the ship as she appeared in the 1980s. It will take some effort to fix it up. The thing that really offended me was the very thick plastic sides on the superstructure. I still haven't come up with a way to thin them down to my satisfaction. I may end up trying to paint the tops as wood, and hide the seams. Some things are very nice, though. I particularly liked the deck. As for photoetch, I'm sure that GMM makes a set. David R. That is if your looking for accuracy. I had the Revell one years ago and thought it was OK till I got a Tamiya kit. Then I compared it to plans of the ship and found the Revell kit was not sized correctly in many areas. That's my two cents, Keith -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Clem Jensen" Subject: USS Ashville PG 84 Where can I get photographs of the Ashville class patrol boats F 84-88? In 1985 her heliopad markings were changed. Today the real ship as a museum has been made to represent her in final year of use. 1990. Speaking of the New Jersey Skywave has recently made a plastic 1/700 scale 1983 era kit of this ship and it's not listed for release in the states. It costs Y-3800. How much is that in USD and why isn't available here. It's number is M-16. If you look at Pacific front hobbies link to them you'll find it on the 2001 Tokyo Hobby Con. Any suggestions? Railings are the wrost in this regard. Are they painted grey like the rest of the ship, another color or left metallic? Fail" Subject: Nantucket Lightship and USCGC Eastwind Several years ago (at least 25-30) a plastic model of Nantucket Lightship was available. I think it was made by Lindberg or Monogram or possibly another manufacturer. It was about 14-15 inches long and was a really great model. I have been looking for this model for many years but it never seems to turn up on E-bay or others. Anybody out there got one (complete & unbuilt) in their closet for sale? Also looking for a Revell USCGC Eastwind (complete & unbuilt).
