It can be improved with a bit of work, but it is still very toylike. The good thing is you can replace the aircraft with the Tamiya 1/350 sets and the difference in scale is hardly noticeable. Stay away from the Arii 1/400 USN sets because they're very poor. Thick wings, oversize detail, etc. As far as the CG Cutter Eastwind goes, It was also released by Revell of Germany as the Burton Island, in the familiar aqua-blue box. Rod -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Bill Livingston" Subject: Re: AOTS books delayed - again Hi Keith, I spoke to Conway on the phone this morning and was informed their four samples of each had arrived and the balance would arrive on Tuesday. (See my earlier note on this a couple of days ago). I myself am driving down to pick up my copy of Hood on Monday (must be getting one of the samples). I suggest you phone Conway Maritime yourself. The printer in Spain story is accurate, but the rest of the information is out of date according to Komal Patel at Maritime Publishing. As I said, I spoke to her an hour or two ago... Bill -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Shirley Sachsen Subject: 1/400 Revell Enterprise what are the chances of this being a reissue of the ARII Enterprise? if not, if it is a retool, why oh why must manufacturers continue to release a one ship class? how do we convince them that a Forrestal, Nimitz, or--perish the thought--an ESSEX would be more appealing to more people? s -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Poutre, Joseph A" Subject: Re: 1/350 USS NEW JERSEY From: IAAFru2@aol.com >> Thanks to all who answered on the revel "New Jersey" it looks like I am going to be stuck with a "Turkey" as they say. I was looking for a W.W.II era 44-45 ship and not really interested in "modern". But since I already bought it off e-Bay I guess I have to keep it. Oh well Maybe someone knows of a conversion kit or an easy way to build W.W.II version? << The best "conversion kit" is to buy a Tamiya or Revell USS Missouri, plus Tom's Modelworks update set to backdate it to NJ's appearance. Maybe someone will accept a trade? I don't have one, or I might. Joe Poutre -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: donald p morgan Subject: 1/1200 scale Langley CV-1 Someone was asking about a 1/1200 scale Langley model. If the modeler in question doesn't mind working in soft metal, this model can be obtained from ALNAVCO P.O. Box 10 Belle Haven, VA 23306 Ask for model kit A517 in the "Superior" line. A year ago, this model was listed at $12.50 plus postage which as I recall runs about $5.00 Alnavco states their models are cast in "lead-free pewter" I have one in my collection, however, I chopped the flight deck to portray the Langley as the seaplane tender it was at the start of WW II.. Not a bad looking model as Superior models go, however nowhere near the level of detail obtainable in other model lines. Don Morgan San Antonio, Tx -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Mike Leonard" Subject: Re: Airfix Four Piper >> Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't this kit sold by Airfix as USS Buchanan orginally? << That would have been the bigger Revell kit (approx. 1/240 scale). It was marketed at least twice: as USS Buchanan and HMS Campbeltown. MWL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: JVT7532@aol.com Subject: Guess who I ran across today? Happy Holiday greetings to all. A quick note of interest. Today I was out doing my Christmas wreath laying at my sisters grave and had gone into the main office to ask them a question about a very fancy marker here in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia. Anyway to make a long story short I was invited later this month to a Champaign toast to Gen. Geo. Meade on his birthday December 31 at 1200 hr. this Civil war general is buried here along with over 32 other Civil war generals including the likes of Crawford & a CSA Gen. Pemberton. I took a walk over to see some of the graves and came across none other than the grave of Rear Admiral Dahlgren, he was not even listed on the page with these other General rank persons and I was a bit surprised to find it. The only reason I did so was that some U.S. Navy personnel from a ship named for him in 1963 I think, placed a beautiful large bronze plaque on a stone above his ground level stone. I will be sure to take my digital camera next time I go if anyone wants to see it or any of the others let me know. Bye for now and thanks for all the great sharing of information. Best regards, Jon -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Ed Grune Subject: Resin body filler Doug asked about resin auto body filler. Its a product called Bondo and it is a 2-part material. A similar material is sold as Evercoat. You can get it at an auto supply store like Pep Boys, Auto Zone, or O'Reilly's. A one pound can is something like 5 dollars - but will last a real long time. You can purchase more hardner seperately. It is a polyester resin in a can and a tube of catlyst/hardner. Mix the two together and spread it on. It has a short working time so I generally mix a dab the size of a quarter and work that. Since Bondo does harden quickly you can sand it smooth soon after application - although it does take a day or so to completely harden. It sands with wet-n-dry paper - although it does tend to clog the paper - even when sanding wet. I used Bondo to fill bubbles, cracks, and other imperfections in the hull of a Whaleback Great Lakes ore carrier I'm working on. I've also used it to fill pin-head size bubbles on the hulls of some commercial ship castings. Ed -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Joel Labow Subject: Turnbuckles Franklyn, The boatwain mate's dictum in the 60's was: If it moves salute it. If it doesn't move, pick it up. If you can't pick it up, paint it. The practical application of this was that deck gangs tried to paint brass and bronze fittings wherever possible so that they wouldn't have to polish them. A common shipboard evolution would be (a) the first lieutenant making his rounds pocketknife in hand looking for brass and bronze that had been painted over, followed by (b) a deck ape with a can of haze grey paint repainting same. In peacetime either shiny brass or haze grey would be correct. In the area of the quarterdeck most ships got the tender to make canvas wraps for the lifelines...these were typically painted white and the turnbuckles would definitely be polished. Joel Labow -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject: Paper models To Melvin Burmaster from Franklyn Brown See Mr. Urdofsky's comments in SMML journal number 1443. Now I am off the hook!!! Now you know how I feel. I am not into paper models, but began semi-scratch building a 1:48 WW 1 USN 110 ft. Submarine Chaser a couple of years ago and began researching it. In the process I acquired some highly skilled and thoroughly knowledgable gurus who are also professional model builders. It is one of them who referred me to the paper model website, which I passed on to SMML. These pros kindly took me under their collective wings and continually had me ripping out features which were either incorrectly done, or were out-and-out wrong. Then I had to re-do them the right way ( for which I am eternally grateful ). I am not a pro, and therefore nowhere as competent as they, but they had great patience and took pity on this poor klutz, and convinced me that I could at least do a "decent" job if I put myself to the task. Talk about gnashing of teeth, you are an amateur, Son !!!! I hope these generous mentors are right. But I do thank you for responding, as my entire professional career was one of sharing information, and getting others to do the same. You may have sensed that by some of the SMML threads that I have initiated. It is a procedure that benefits everyone. "A man's reach should exceed his grasp". Matt Prager -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: ALROSS2@aol.com Subject: Re: bubbly polyurethane resin hull >> using auto body filler. Can someone tell me what kind to look for, and will it work with the poly resin? << A lacquer-based automotive spot putty such as Nitro-Stan works well. It is about the consistency of toothpaste, spreads easily, dries quickly and hard, and wet-sands nicely. The heavier two-part autobody filler (bondo) is a polyester-based product that is less apt to fill tiny pin holes well. Al Ross -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: "Bruce Ross" Subject: Re: Turnbuckles Franklyn, Just a follow up to your post regarding turnbuckles. I didn't see the original so I'm not sure what timeframe you're looking at. On the DDG that I served on during the mid-70's the turnbuckles were polished every morning regardless of whether or not we were at sea. And as far as my aging memory goes all of the other DD's in the harbor were polishing every morning. So it's your model do as you please. Happy modeling, Bruce Ross -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "Bruce Ross" Subject: Re: bubbly polyurethane resin hull Doug what I have been using is by Bondo, No. 907 Glazing & Spot Putty. I have been picking up a 4.5oz tube at the local auto parts house. I'm using it on a resin hull that I poured and it seems to work pretty well. Bruce Ross Ft. I for one will be very interested in the kit when it comes out. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: "Melea/Mike Maynard" Subject: Turnbuckles and Eastwind Franklyn - regarding the appearance of turnbuckles...In the late 1960's I served on 3 pre WWII era CG cutters(steam powered no less). It was an unwritten rule (thought up by a BOATSWAINMATE no doubt) that life lines, turnbuckles and pelican hooks were to be kept free of paint. This was necessary so that life lines could be loosened or made taught for lowering a small boat or other deck type evolutions, impossible if the threaded portion was painted. The turnbuckles were a lovely shade of weathered "Green", a marlinspike could be inserted in the turnbuckles holes to loosen it. Speaking of applying paint on objects that require none, I was once awarded 2 extra hours (a "Duce", Bosun talk)of duty for getting a little paint on a water tight door gasket. To "Wheels" Fail, contact me off list, I might be persuaded to part with a re-issue Eastwind. Or, at least something close to it. The kit was modified from a japanese kit of the WW2 New Jersey with parts to build the Vietnam war version. Revell added parts (Harpoon and Tomahawk missile launchers, etc.) to build the 80's version. If the kit has remained the same, you might not have to modify it as much as you thought. This kit should be an impressive thing in 1/400. << I hate to burst your bubble, but don't expect a new kit. This is, according to my rep at MMD, simply a reissue of the old Aurora/Monogram kit. I am hoping to get something new out of it, a decent air wing would be nice. At least the 1/400 Arii air wing will be the same scale, but there still isn't a S-2/E-1 or A-3 included, and the Arii set does not have an A-4, and the Aurora airplanes are little better than the "blobs on a stick" I read elsewhere today.
