So if anyone knows of what ships were in the "E"'s taskforce there's another possibility. << The Enterprise and her task force was 8 hours out and did not get into Pearl till that night. I think they stayed outside till the morning of the 8th to enter and refuel, then they went back out that same day to search to the north west of Pearl. Do know that the Salt Lake City CA-25 was in group. rich -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Steve Sliwka" Subject: Wood/styrene glue & more card ??? Thinking about doing a ship out of wood in 1/192 scale (1"=16', easy for this draftsman), but I have a few questions. I have built many plastic kits and have considerable experience at scratchbuilding. The vessel I'm planning on doing would be about 48"/122cm long. I have a few options as to how to do this. First, everything from Evergreen styrene. The deck structures will be styrene regardless, no matter which method I choose. Second, the hull out of a solid wood block. Anyone have suggestions where to get wood if I go this route? The recent thread on card got me thinking. Is it possible to build framing for this hull out of card and enclose it in styrene? Thinking along the lines of plank-on-bulkhead. I prefer crosswise framing over longitudinal. Any suggestions on glue/epoxy preferences for gluing card to plastic or wood to plastic? Thanks! Best wishes in the New Year! Steve -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Ed Grune Subject: Revell USCGC Campbell Hello SMMLies everywhere. Happy New Year. A local hobby shop is managing an estate sale - selling off a late modeler's collection. I came across a early vintage Revell USCGC Campbell. There is a copyright date of 1956 molded on the side of the bridgehouse. Why did Revell always put that somewhere that shows? The kit is box-scale but based on the measurements and the description of the boat on the description it looks to be about 1:300 scale. It is molded in white, spar yellow, and gray. It doesnt't have the typical Revell flat keel, and the molded railings are almost passable as having canvas dashers installed. Is anyone familiar with this kit. Is it a fairly good WWII representation of the ship? It looks to be pretty builable - and a weaponry update using donated parts from the Tamiya Fletcher may just work without looking too out of scale. Any opinions? Ed Mansfield, TX Contact me off list for the email address of the hobby shop handling the sale. He has a number of collectable kits. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Pwesty" Subject: Iowa class battleship Does anyone know of any company that makes a upgrade kit that you could turn Tamiya USS-New Jersey(BB-62) into one the other Iowa class battleship that served during the late 80's and 90's. I can't stand NJ's ECM gear ( I think that is what it is) on her conning tower just plain looks ugley. Thanks -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Barry Fleet" Subject: Re: Hasagawa HMS Vanguard This may be the same Vanguard that I bought in the late 60's. At that time in the UK it was sold by Frog. The model was totally lacking in any detail and was more a toy as per Lindberg HMS Hood. A shame as this was a beautiful and powerful warship. Of course this could be another kit. Find the website very interesting and useful. I made plastic model warships for many years (60s) and even made the Heller Hood which, as was stated earlier, not a bad kit of the Hood in its 1941 configuration. I have recently started making kits again and am currently working on a Heller "Richelieu". Again not a bad kit at all especially if you don't want to pay a mortgage for a resin kit. As a quick question. What is the best thing to use for rigging these 1/400 kits. I bought fishing line but found that it won't straighten satisfactorily and remains curved. Is that the right scale if your placing them on a 1:350 ship? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "michael thrupp" Subject: Naval Big Gun reloading cycle? May I first wish everyone reading this a Happy New Year. I would be grateful if anyone outthere can set my mind at rest on the manner of naval big gun reloading. Do all or any capital main armament after firing a shell at, say an angle of 45 degrees, depress to a near-zero angle to reload i.e. have a shell (and where necessary, one or more bagged charges of propellant loaded by rammer), before re-elavating to the same angle to re-engage the same target, or could the barrel remain at the same angle (with perhaps a small increment of change to allow for a small change of range by the target?) This has been bothering me for some time. I look forward to any enlightenment. Thanks Mike Thrupp -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Schiefet@cs.com Subject: USS Boston >> I have a copy of the instructions of the old kit by Revell of the BOSTON. The last time I built the model was in the early 70s. Does anyone out there have any idea where I could get hold of the kit. Although it only has 54 parts I think it could be made in to a good model. << John, I have seen this model on e-bay and occasionally at flea markets and Train & Model meets. The problem with e-bay is you can get into a bidding war and shipping is often quite pricey. BTW, The USS Boston association is preparing a permanent exhibit aboard the USS Salem. It will be adjacent tot he model display room and the USS Newport News displays. Happy New Year to All. Steve Pelham, NH -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: Schiefet@cs.com Subject: Ship's entering PH after attack The Enterprise task force did not enter PH until Dec. 8, so it is unlikely it was any ship from that Task Force. According the tail gunner from 6-S-7, they were damn glad to be back aboard Enterprise after being fired upon by both sides that morning.
