Its listed here in Ontario at about three times the price of the sub, which I thought an excellent buy at 25.00CDN (and for which I traded a RUBIS, U-boat & Avro Clunk to my 7 year old, so closer to 45.00 before I actually start building) Is it a rescaled clone ? << In a word, NO! The ship bears no resemblance to the old Lindberg P.O.S. that used to float around at such great hobby outlets as Big Lots and K-B Toy Liquidators. Those kits were so bad that they stayed on the shelf at $10 for years! The new kit is similar to the Trumpeter Nimitz class. A little crude, but it is all there just waiting for the intrepid modeller to add the needed details. The scale was chosen to make them in about the same scale as the Revell carriers and Nimitz kits. These kits are, IMO, slightly better than the Nimitz kits. Silva should buy the plastic kit by Heller for the Victory. This is the best one available, and it is very big (1/100 scale). Best of all, ModelExpo is now selling it for only $69.00. Andy Vu -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Bruno Gire" Subject: Mystery battleship in hollywood movies Happy New Year to all! Maybe someone can answer the following enigma I've been looking for years. Alfred Hitchcock's 1942 movie "Saboteur" (a US propaganda remake of his former, British made film) ends with the "villain" trying to sabotage the launching of a new battleship, called "Alaska" in the movie. Hitchcock used -then censored- Navy footage, which shows a battleship being launched on a slip. >From the shape of the fore hull, one may suppose this is a North Carolina or a South Dakota class BB. Can anyone give me the name of the real battleship? Andrew Davis recent movie, "Perfect Murder", starring Michael Douglas, displays in Douglas' office a large B&W photograph showing the launching of another BB. This is obviously an hommage to Hitchcock, as the movie comes from the famous play "Dial M for Murder", which also came into a movie in the 50's by Sir Alfred, starring Grace Kelly. This time, the battleship shown may be an "Iowa", but which one? Bruno Gire Bordeaux, France -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Joel Labow Subject: HMS Victory and Mayflower in Plastic One way to achieve your goal would be to get the Heller Victory in 1/100 scale and the Revell Mayflower in 1/96. The Heller kit is available from Model Expo for ~$80...I don't know if the Revell Mayflower is still in production but one often sees it on eBay at reasonable prices. Joel Labow -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: BECJPARKER@aol.com Subject: Re: Soviet Destroyers WWII Just got a Trumpeter kit of a WWII Soviet Grodney Class destroyer. Does anyone know how the decks were finished, wood (painted or natural) or linoleum? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Darshan Ward" Subject: HMS Victory and Mayflower Michael De Silva asked about Airfix or Revell Victory etc. May I suggest/recomend the Heller Victory. An excellent representation albeit with the famous entry port anomaly. A great kit recently at a knockdown price from Model-Expo. Happy Modelling Michael....!!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "DUCKMAN" Subject: HMS VICTORY MICHAEL AND ALL, A SHIP LIKE THE VICTORY DESERVES TO BE DONE PROPERLY. TRY THE HELLER 1/100. MODEL EXPO HAS THE BEST PRICE. I STILL HAVE THE FLAG HOIST, WHICH I ADDED TO MINE, "ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY". IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, CONTACT ME OFF LIST. DAVID IN DIXIE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Victor M. Baca" Subject: Hull Lines >> Okay, I'm full of questions tonight. On the Floating Drydock page, in the plans section, they have Hull Line drawings. What exactly are these? << A full set of hull lines includes a Body Plan (The hull's shape if sliced along vertical sections running fore to aft), Half Breadths (the hull's shape along horizontal stations as if sliced lengthwise) and the Sheer Plan (The hull as seen from it's side or profile). Because most ships are mirror images port and starboard, the body plan is drawn showing the hull from amidships to bow on one side of the ship's vertical centerline and the ship's hull from amidships to stern jutting out from the other side of the centerline opposite of the forebody's sections. These sections are drawn as if "stacked," so the body lines can be seen as they relate to each other if you were looking straight down the ship from the bow and stern. On the Sheer Plan or side profile of the hull, Station lines are drawn vertically along the ship from stem to stern, showing the hull stations that correspond to the sections shown on the Body Plan. Horizontal lines, stacked vertically, running lengthwise show the positions of the hull shape as shown on the Half Breadth plan. Combined, all three show you the exact shape of the hull in all dimensions. A body plan alone is useful for plank on bulkhead models if they correspond to the stations shown on the General Arrangement plan's inboard or outboard profiles. Best bet for utmost accuracy is to have the complete Hull Lines plan so you can determine details such as the shape of the keel, its width and overall form, etc. If re-working a waterline model, the job is a lot simpler. You could re-build a model by the "eyeball" method, but for a really accurate hull, you need the Lines plan. For a surgical accuracy job as on a model kit, you could reduce the body plans to match the scale of the hull, make templates from the reduction and reshape an out-of-scale kit to conform to the shape of the templates. Good luck and enjoy the model. You can rotate the headstock to turn create tapers, a feature that makes gun barrel turning much easier. Sherline makes just about every attachment you could want, and their customer service is excellant.
