I have seen OD mentioned but the photographs I have seen look would make one think it is a deeper green. Any comment or suggestions on the correct paint to use? << The manual for the PBR MK2 identifies this paint as "Marine Green 23". Perhaps John or Randy could provide a correlation??? Al Ross -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: phalanx Yeah i agree with it would take about 20 on each side of say a building at various ranges to bring down say a jumbo or something large..& now they are realising the "vulnerability" of the Gun system. As i remember seeing some report some time ago, that the Phalanx would not really stop a missile, all it really does is hopefully explode the missile before it hits the ship, yet the fragments of a missile say the size of the Exocet would still carry forward & still damage a ship (so imagine what a russian anti ship large cruise missile would be like) & in one test a pice of missile carried thru into the ship & cut vital electrical cables (i think they used an old warship & a live missile or computer i can't quite recall), so imagine if you are in an old FFG, your phalanx takes out 1 exocet but the parts stil splinter the ship sending really nasty pieces of metal thru the bridge or the hanger (fuel!) ..could make one heck of a mess. And since the real power of the Phalanx is the depleted uranium 20mm shells, many countries have gone to the basic 20mm shells (australia got rid of their depleted uranium what the mid 90's or was it late 80's?) so without the uranium casing, it actually lowers the success rate of the Phalanx. Hence the replacement system called the RIM-116 RAM which uses a "naval" version of the stinger missile in a special mounting which it seems is not very successful so it maybe mounted in old Phalanx mounts with the gatling gun removed. And according to one US navy guy i talked once a few years ago when the US navy was here, he heard that the navy was thinking of maybe even doing away with Phalanx, RAM & just relay on the updated SM-2 Standard missiles, but he also said that he heard something about lasers but i think that could be still some way off (seeing that the 747 laser aircraft is still yet to fly & needs a 747 to house the laser..so is the US navy going to re-design a small carrier or maybe an ex tanker into a laser platform?) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Lester Abbey" Subject: Why I am a ship modeler Are there other types of Models? Lester Abbey Wellington NZ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Mark Brayshaw" Subject: Why I build ship models I thought about this for a while, actually, I've been 'between contracts' for the last three months and I've been using some of that time on scratch building a 1:600 modified leander class cruiser. Anyway, I came up with lots of justifications like "Men can't give birth, so we build things" etc etc (BTW I also restore Triumph sports cars) and then it hit me.... I don't have to justify or explain it, anyone who has to ask, just doesn't get it. regards Mark Brayshaw -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject: Fletcher Was wondering if anyone has done the 1/350 Tamiya FLETCHER as one of the few that had a catapult on them - seems to me it would be fairly easy using some PE. Not sure but I think it was they same type as on the cruisers (CLs?). If someone has done one I would sure like to see it - bet it would also get a few questionable looks at a show. For those who do not know what I am refering to there is a picture of the PRINGLE on Navsources webs site - go to: http://www.navsource.org/archives/05/0547703.jpg Thanks Mike NAVYDAZE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Richard Rathgeber Subject: Thanks I can't tell you (course that's just what I'm doing) how much I already enjoy this site. I've been making models of things all my short 53yrs and I find very few who truly are sympathetic. An ex-girl-friend gave me a Scientific Model of the Sovereign of the Seas and while going to medical school and having zilch for money I put it together. I haven't stopped since. I'm currently hoping to do a model of the USS Salem but it seems nearly impossible to lay my hands on a kit. I spoke with Steve Wiper who was super and I have been trying to track down one. If anyone out there has one which they would part with please let me know. Thanks again and drop me a line if you have time. P.S. Acetone is dangerous to the liver and other such organs and not merely due to the fire hazard. Rick Rathgeber -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Robert Lockie" Subject: Large scale U-boot guns Hi John The only AAA of which I am aware for large scale Kriegsmarine units is the mountings made by the French company ADV/Azimut. I have the twin 2cm and am still seeking the twin 3.7cm, due to a mix-up with the chap I sent to acquire it. I have an idea that the same company might make a single 2cm mount as well. Alternatively, Accurate Armour can usually be persuaded to provide parts of its kits (such as the deck 8.8cm from its Type VII U-boot) for a reasonable price. Try http://accurate-armour.com/ - I have an idea that the 8.8cm is actually available as a kit in its own right now and there may be a 2cm available separately as well.
