I would like to know if anyone has any experience with this product, or can recommend another source. << WAY OVERPRICED!!!!!! Try the following link: http://www.smooth-on.com/ You can get for a "silicone sampler" kit for $20 postpaid in the US..This is about half what it would normally cost. It comes with 1:1 by volume silicone rubber, Casting resin, mold sealer and mold release. This is a good way to get started. This is what got me started and now I reorder my casting supplies from them. By the way, this is a one-time only per person deal. Good Luck! Mike/NAVYDAZE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Erwin Van Deynze Subject: Spotter-planes onboard Yamato durign ten-ichigo Hi Mike, I believe the manual states no planes or boats where on board during ten-ichogo, but from what I've learned so far, Yamato did carry one plane on board. It was launched and sent back to Japan before the final US-attack... I am not sure but I guess it was mentioned in the AOTS book... but could also have been the article in Tamiya Modelling Magazine lately... This gives you the fourteen mountings that you are looking for. I love these easy questions. The real question is; how was the ship camouflaged? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: GKingzett@aol.com Subject: Re: Casting Resin Supplies I use Micro Mark's resin and like it a lot. I have one suggestion and one question. Make sure you mix each of the two resin components very well in their bottles before you dispense them. Turn the bottles over end for end about a dozen times, the air bubble moving around inside will mix them. If you don't do this, the resin stays rubbery, never does get rigid. I haven't had to worry about air bubbles. When I mix the two components together, again I mix thoroughly, the bubbles come out before I pour the casting. A little work with a sharp tooth pick will suffice to poke any bubble out which might cause a problem. My question to the experts is, what do you do about moisture causing bubbles in the casting? I use the slow setting resin so I don't have to rush the pour and I don't have to worry about heat build up. Here in New Jersey, the humidity is pretty high in the summer time. Even though my shop is air conditioned (lucky me) castings I make in the summer develop bubbles all through them. I don't have the problem at all the rest of the year. Any suggestions? Gary -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Duane Fowler Subject: Gakken Yamato book - what´s it worth? Hello Thors, There are four books put out by Gakken with photos of a 1/100 scale model of the Yamato. Actually, there are two models, both 1/100 scale. There are two soft cover books and two hard cover books. The hard cover books cost twice as much as the soft cover but have many more photos. The smaller hard cover book has photos taken with a special camera to give the effect of standing on the deck. The large hard cover has two fold out pages that have side and overhead photos of the entire model sized to 1/350 scale. The soft covers go for about 1800¥ in Japan and the larger hard cover costs 4700¥. I am not sure what the smaller one costs. They are all worth the price, even if you can't read the text. Most of the photo captions are in English as well as Japanese. Best regards, Duane Fowler (currently on the road in Asia) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: MMclau1079@aol.com Subject: Re: HMS Sheffield Hi John, From the photographs of Sheffield that I have, I believe the placement of her (14) 20 mm's in 1943 are as follows: (1) 20mm offset to port on B turret, free standing without a tub. (4) 20mm's on the bridge deck. (These four are placed one each on both sides of the HA directors on the bridge deck.) The next (4) 20mm's appear to me to be on the catapult deck close to the hangar doors. (These are placed two on each side close together in the corner close to the hangar doors.) Then (4) 20mm's as you noted around the after HA director deck. Lastly, (1) 20mm in a tub on X turret. I believe this last 20 mm in the tub on X turret is offset to starboard fom the center line. IAAFru2@aol.com asked, ref 1:350 Tamiya NJ FROM MO: >> Now here;s my problem Keith has told me that I need to scratch build the mast on the Aft stack, but I HAVE HAD NO EXPERIENCE at scratch building. << I used photos and drawings from Paul Stillwell's book when I built mine--basically, you fill all the slots for the various platforms and tubs on the aft stack. The mast itself was basically a tripod stepped off the stack, and is only slightly different from the one she carries today. I used Evergreen styrene rod to make the mast, if you can build a kit, you can scratchbuild the mast and SP height finder on top of it. I have a photo of my model when it was 99% complete, I'll try to find it and send it direct to you..... Someone wrote earlier that they thought manufacturers should be held accountable for the demise of the hobby. Does that include the good plastic manufacturers who are constantly releasing new, largely high-quality products, and the small cottage manufacturers (like myself) who are busting our asses for tiny profits to try and make the modeling world a little better place? When we were younger, we built Lindberg and Revell kits. Most of us seem to have stayed in the hobby regardless, and have become discerning modelers. We've started buying and building better quality plastic kits and even a few resin kits. Some of us have even learned how to scratchbuild. We survived. So will today's younger modelers. Just look at all the people who have posted responses to the question of how they got into modeling. The hobby is fine. It's just becoming a little more secular as the culture around it changes. Mike Bartel -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Resin Casting Supplies To Dave and others on the list, Look in the back pages of any Fine Scale Modeler magazine and look for a small display advertisement for "Ace Resin". They sell the best "Do it yourself" starter casting kit. It comes with a little RTV for molding and a little resin for the casting. You also get lots of other goodies to make molds and do the casting. The instruction book is really helpful. As someone who knows a little about casting, I would highly recommend this company to anyone. Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Gakken Yamato book To everyone on this message board who has not seen a Gakken Book on the IJN, If you are a fan of the IJN, they are worth their weight in Gold! They contain historic photos, photos of large scale models and drawings. Although the text is entirely Japanese, the photos and drawings are worth a thousand words each. They cost approx. 1600 to 2000 Yen. Convert to your own currency. They are available in the US thru Pacific Front Hobbies, or you can find them thru Hobby Link Japan. I have bought every one of the IJN related Gakken Books and am very happy with them. Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: "Jim Kloek" Subject: Vittorio Veneto I am getting ready to start a 1/700 model of the Vittorio Veneto. I have some good sources for the design of the camouflage she wore in the 1942-43 time frame. Does anyone have any suggestions as to paints or paint mixes for the light and dark grays that were used? What color were her decks? What was her radar fit during this time frame? The photos I have show an antenna on top of her foretower that looks not unlike the radar used on USN 5 inch directors, but the pictures really do not show much detail. Photos of other ships in the class show the same antenna and another one, differently shaped, on the front face of the fore tower. Did Veneto have this antenna too? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
