For 1:700 scale you can use generic railing from Tom's Modelworks or GMM. If memory serves me, TMW also has radar set for soviet destroyers in 1:700 scale. Regarding the Trumpeter's Sovremenny 1:200 kit (she is sitting on my workbench now!): the kit provides PE railings and masts, but the real magic starts if you have WEM PE set for Sovremenny. It is expensive (I paid $54 for it) but it worth every penny: - the full radar set, so you can build any of three modifications used with project 956; - UHF antennas - new superdetailed masting elements; - additional railings (especially cool one for raised bow section); - AK130 cooling hoses and steps; - SA-N-7 railings; - helicopter's landing grid and hangar door rails; - ladders; - w/p hatches of two sizes; - helix details (rotor blades etc.) Happy modeling, Alec -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Denis L Johnson Subject: Help & Naval Base Help: I am trying to reach Rev. Sean A Taylor, whose address is or was Angelweb@bwr.eastlink.ca. My messages keep getting sent back. Anybody? Naval Base: I have ordered one kit from them. They were helpful in replying to my E-mails of inquiry, & I received my kit without undue dalay. The kit is a candidate for inclusion the "worst kit" thread, but don't blame Naval Base for that as they described quite accurately & it was cheap. (Well OK it was the Easybuilt Corvette 1:144. Easybuilt was making balsa & tissue airplane kits in the '40's. A poor kit but OK for the money.) Regards to all Denis Johnson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Donald Bridge Subject: Peculiar launcher Hi Pelle That sounds like the Australian developed Ikara anti-submarine system used on the Australian version. It was a missile containing a Mk 44 or 45 Torpedo. I think that it is a single arm launcher, but the Perths carried 2 of them. There is a nice shot of a Leander equipped with a single launcher on page 520 of Conway 47-95 As to what had in As far as I know it was the HMAS Perth Class (ex Charles F Adams), HMAS Swan class, Brazilian Niteroi class frigates, HMNZS Southland, HMS Leander class (conversions). I'm sure Shane can fill in the missing details. Don Bridge Hi Don, No those parts are not the Ikara - I checked my DDG kit when Pelle's post came in. It looks like a SAM launcher and goes on the ship aft of the rear turret where the Standard missile launcher is (was) in RAN ships. Regards, Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Chris & Lulu Langtree" Subject: Display Cases Hi All I am looking for someone who does display cases, this must be a top quality custom built item. Can anyone suggest a prospective candidate. Thanks Chris Langtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Jeff Herne" Subject: Naval Base Hobbies SMMLies, Here's my obligatory post for 2002... I've known Shaya for a while, since 1997 when my book was being published. I would stop by and visit his shop in Manhattan on my way to the printer. He's always been a straightforward guy, easy to deal with, and reliable. I don't know the circumstances of any complaints, but I would not hesitate to confirm his integrity. His is a one-man operation, and he has a family to support and bills to pay, not to mention a real-life, not just one that involves catering to the ship modeling community. Jeff Herne -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: airartcsb@juno.com Subject: Newbie with an Idea :) Greetings All!! What a pleasure it is to read and associate with fellow ship modelers! I wish I would have known about this news letter sooner but ohhhhhh well. My name is C. S. Bailey I am a navel and aviation artist you can view my work at www.kcshop.com/airartcsb I build and then photograph models to help me in my paintings. Enough of the intro. Now for the heads up. I found something that works really well in modeling water to exhibit waterline ships. You first use scuplty clay (An acrylic base) to form the large waves and bow crest. Bake it and then sand to shape. Paint the base the appropriate color. Then the fun begins! Everyone is familiar with gel Medium, cover the base about 1/8 thick, then take tissue Kleenex and peel it into to sheets, rip the edges uneven and while the gel is still wet place the tissue on the surface, it will pucker and wave in random ways the really works like wave actions. You can also position it by pushing and pulling with the blunt end of a paint brush. The gel will absorb the tissue and cover it, but the waves remain. Let dry then paint again if necessary but then coat with another layer of gel. let dry and apply several layers of floor acrylic for a high shine. Best wishes C.S. I am building HMS Aurora in 1942 fit, does anyone know if the bottom row of portholes were plated over? thanks for any help graham -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Keith Bender" Subject: Re: Gray Lady Down Hi SMMLies, The sub in "Gray Lady Down" was very close to a "Skate" class. You'll notice that there was two stern torrpedo tubes on the model. The skate class had two stern tubes. The Nautilus and Seawolf didn't have stern tubes. Seawolf had a completely different bow. All of our other subs really don't come close to that design so I would say the model makes went with the Skate class. Also the same model was used in the movie "Ice Station Zebra" and one other movie that I don't remember the name but the boat was called the "Waynne". Hope this helps, Keith -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Russ Busby Subject: DISPLAYING A SHIP IN DRYDOCK I am building USS BARRY (DDG 52) in 350th scale. I plan to display her on blocks as she would sit in drydock, however I do not know what the blocking system looks like. Does anyone have any references where I could find pictures of the Arleigh Burke class in drydock?. Thank-you Russ Busby -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "DUCKMAN" Subject: WHY I BUILD SHIP MODELS ALL, I ACTUALLY ENJOY BOTH SHIPS AND AIRCRAFT. THE TROUBLE WITH AIRCRAFT IS THAT YOU HAVE TO SET THEM ON THE T.V., MANTLE, YOUR WIFE'S CURIO CABINET, ETC. WITH SHIPS, YOU CAN JUST HANG 'EM ON THE CIELING AND THEY LOOK GREAT. DAVID IN DIXIE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: MARDOT237@aol.com Subject: Where to buy kits of USS Arizona & Missouri Hello My Name is Marty in Brooklyn and I am not a real model builder at all. I am interested in purchasing a reasonably priced model of the USS Arizona and the USS Missouri (I'm a Brooklyn history nut and both were built here.) Any ideas on sources or any offers? Thanks -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: Brent Theobald Subject: Final Installment of Tamiya's Bismarck Uploaded - Roll Models Howdy! I have uploaded part 6 of the online build of Tamiya's 1/350th Bismarck using Gold Medal Models' photo etch. This is the final installment and is mainly a collection of detail photos. Here's the link: http://www.rollmodels.net/reviews/Bismarck/part06.php John Higgins did an excellent job building the model and writing the articles. He ought to get special compensation for haveing to deal with me :-) If you visit the site please send John some fan mail. He can be contacted at: mailto:Jetranger15@cs.com What's next? I have two 1/350th Arizona's out right now being built. One with the Gold Medal Models' p/e and another with the Tom's Modelworks set. The idea is to allow modelers to compare the two. I hope to get at least one installment up by February 1st. If writing reviews like John's Bismark sounds like something you would like to do please contact me at: mailto:brent@rollmodels.com Finally, come visit our online database and searchable catalog at: http://www.rollmodels.com Have fun!
