My understanding is that the vertical surfaces were 507 C and the wooden part of the main deck (or is it the upper deck in British terms?) was unpainted. But what colour was the sloping fo'c'sel deck, and what colours were the upperwork decks? BTW, the B-Resina kit is pretty nice, but has some obvious little faults. The boat decks were not layed with wood as in the kit. Correction needs some filling and sanding, but is no major problem. Also, in my understanding, the after part of the hull sides were straight down to the waterline. Again some putty is necessary to fit this, but also no major problem. However, it could have been done better. I have not had any problems with Naval Base Hobbies and will recommend them to any shipmodeler. Can you tell a bit more about this kit, is it plastic or resin? Detailing level, quality? I will be happy to add Nanuchka to my collection... Thanks, Alec -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: Felix Bustelo Subject: Mirage U-Boats Hello Everybody, I am sure that Jacques Druel will chime in at some point but he mentioned to me that L'Arsenal will be producing some aftermarket products for these fine line of U-boat kits. I know because it's sitting on my closet shelf where I look at it every week. Also, it includes the photoetch and looks to be a very nice kit. I got this from a hobby shop in Norway through the mail believe it or not! << Ah, that would probably be the Hopefully Soon to be a Modeller's Heaven! Last time I was there, the Osa kit was still available, so anyone interested may send an email to hsmh@netpower.no and ask. Don't know the price, but I do know that the proprietor can be very slow in sending stuff out (ask Chris Langtree about the Pavla Roc:)). The phone number is +47 51 69 61 97, ask for Mr. Birger Apelseth. No, I don't have any shares, just helping out anyone "desperately seeking Osa". Jens -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: SantMin@aol.com Subject: fatten up PE figures >> The PE figures just don't do it for me... but maybe I just haven't figured a way to "fatten them up" properly as of yet. << This I'm sure is not the only way but it works for me (and I do agree, those flat "gumby" figures spoil a model). Give this a try. I seperate the lines of figures horizontially so the I have lines of figures still attached to the waste brass by their feet. I hold these with self closing tweesers as a handle and thus can work on several sets at the same time. Bend any arms and legs you want to change and then shoot the whole string with a Zip Kicker. Then you can start adding bulk with thick CA glue on a fine wire stuck into a pencil eraser, it sets as soon as it touches the figure with kicker on it. In that way you can control where you add CA and even build heads with chins! I usually like to do a pot bellied chief or two. I then paint them mass production style before cutting them loose at their feet. This also works for 1/700 PE figures. Does Tom Freeman have a web site? Ron -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "D.Przezdziecki" Subject: Uboat mounted WG >> Not familiar with a "WG42" rocket launcher. But launching rockets from a submerged U-Boat did take place, just one of many visionary ideas conceived and tested in Germany during WW2.....SNIP The launcher was a fine example of German efficiency: the rockets were fired directly from their wooden shipping crates, which were attached to a very simple metal frame. Although the results were promising, plans to use submarine launched rockets against convoys or enemy harbors were never carried through. << Where you see vision Dave I see desperation and "on the hoof" improvisation instead of forward planning. The whole V1 and V2 programme was implemented because nobody who mattered in Hitler's Germany had a vision to develop a long range heavy bomber comparable to Liberator or Lancaster. By the time of the declaration of the war with USA even Germany's medium bombers were well behind of comparable allied designs. And than of course there was Hitler's fury at his inability to reach and attack American mainland. Vast effort and costs were incured in trying to design a weapon with which American cities could have been attacked. I would not also call the idea of launching WG 41 rockets from Uboats "efficient". All of WG type rockets were an area bombardment weapons and deployment in large numbers was required to achieve desired effect. They were not accurate enough for pinpoint attacks even when mounted on relatively stable land carriages and platforms so what hope was there of scoring a hit on a particular port installation with limited number of rockets fired from a submerged boat???? Hitting a ship on the move with such a weapon (by design and not by pure luck) is beyond the realms of possibility IMO. USS BARRY (DDG 52) was commissioned in 1992. She was built at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Mississippi. She is the second ship in the Arleigh Burke class DDG and is homeported in Norfok Virginia. I served on her for three years as the Command Master Chief. She is an absolutly beautiful ship. Only drawback to those was that you needed a certain p/e-set from Eduard which never came into existence (not here in Germany, anyway) :( << IIRC, the missing p/e was for the the hand rungs (at least in my box) as the rest of the brass was there. I simply substituted some N-scale RR hand holds from GMM (yes, he does train stuff, too!) and put them in the box where they remain 8 years later. ................someday..................... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: Ted0330@aol.com Subject: Re: naval slang I'm an OB/Gyn, and as an intern (the lowest form of post-medical school life) I came up with the 5 phrases needed to have a conversation with an attending physician. Is is on par with the 1/125 Fletcher? << Yes (for better or worse). >> Does it have potential? << For starters, be prepared to do a lot of filling where the deck joins the hull, not to mention removing the plating lines that cover virtually EVERYTHING. But it can be salvaged.
