Does Tom Freeman have a web site? << The US Naval Institute Store in Annapolis, MD has a large collection of various artists and the best prices I've seen anywhere, even cheaper than the artists are selling them for. http://www.usni.org/ I couldn't find a list on the website, but if you contact the bookstore manager, Virginia Schultz at vschultz@usni.org, she can send you a color pamphlet with images and prices. Darren Scannell -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Naval Art >> Can anyone suggest a good source of Naval Art. Does Tom Freeman have a web site? << Ron, You can buy Freeman art prints thru J & D Productions, of which Don Preul is a hacker on this message board. Don chime in here and give the good folks your web site address anytime. I think his web site address is www.jdproduct.com Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Doug Wilde" Subject: Drawings of naval ship fixtures I am looking for drawings (dimensioned preferred) of fixtures one would find aboard WWII-era US naval ships. By fixtures I mean mundane items such as portholes, airports, dogs on doors or hatches, hose brackets, battle announcing equipment and the like. Were there Navy specification or were they simply catalog items (OK, not the battle announcing equipment)? Any references would be greatly appreciated. Doug Wilde -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Steve Sliwka" Subject: Arktika kit Hi guys I know I've asked this before, but can't find it in my emails (yes, I actually save every issue of SMML I've received). Anyway, trying to locate the 1/400 scale plastic kit of the Soviet Arktika-class nuclear icebreaker. I live in the states, therefore, I'd prefer to find a shop in either the US or Canada that sells this. I've heard some good things about this kit and I want to give it a try. I've done my share fare of kits from the USSR/Russia, so Russian instructions are no hinder to me. If anyone has anything to add to the description of this kit, please do so! Also, I've seen many sites on the excursions on these ships to the North Pole. Just wondering if there's any videos on these trips (for detail shots, of course). Thanks! Does Tom Freeman have a web site? << Hi Ron: I'd check with Don Preul at www.jdproduct.com or e-mail at: jdproduct@aol.com. He is an authorized selling agent for Tom's Limited Edition signed and numbered prints. On the website, click on "Naval Prints" and enjoy--good stuff there... Regards, Victor Baca -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Mike Bartel Subject: VANGUARD Hull >> BTW, the B-Resina [Vanguard] kit is pretty nice, but has some obvious little faults. The boat decks were not layed with wood as in the kit. Correction needs some filling and sanding, but is no major problem. Also, in my understanding, the after part of the hull sides were straight down to the waterline. Again some putty is necessary to fit this, but also no major problem. However, it could have been done better. << According to Garzke & Dulin, the body plan shows some minor sheer flare on the sides at the stern aft of the main armour belt. I completed a hull master for a 1:700 Vanguard a few years ago (which obviously never made it to market), and I followed their book, as well as some photos. It sounds like the BR kit has the same features that my hull has. The architectural similarity to the contemporary KG5 and Lion classes makes it more logical too, except for the flared forecastle. Incidentally, if you look at the Matchbox 1:700 hull for the KG5 class, for example, they seem to have done a better job than Tamiya did at getting the hull lines. At least, in my opinion, anyway. Anyway, I'd leave your Vanguard hull as is. (www.rollmodels.com) Unfortunately, at present Part just hasn't jumped on the Mirage series yet. Which is a shame, because they could be some dynamite little kits with PE add-ons! Also another tid-bit. Today I just received the Revell 1/72nd Schnellboot, and first impressions are terrific! I'm no S-Boat expert, but this example looks extremely good to me. I'll try to pass more info on later, has anyone else dove into this kit yet ? I have no doubt this will be a popular kit with plenty of room for superdetailers to go wild. And in case anyone is interested, there is a nice little site for the S-Boats I recently found at: www.prinzeugen.com/SBOATIND.htm HTH Bruce -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Roy McKay Subject: references for post-refit Nimitz? Hello all, Newbie to the site here, Where can I find plans or references to build a post-refit Nimitz, a post refit Enterprise and a Regan from the Italeri-Revell kits? I know that I can scale sown the dimensions from the Tamiya Enterprise but I havn't been able to afford it yet. And building that will be another story...... Secondly, I see from looking at some message boards there was talk of a decal set for the cv numbers for these kits, any news on that development? Looking forward to more......... Intended Shape of the Navy in 15 Years Subject to any significant change in the World security situation and UK Defence Policy, therefore, the Fleet 15 years hence should comprise: 4 Vanguard class SSBNs and 10 SSNs (about 50:50 Trafalgar and Astute classes). 2 CV(F)s, 2 Albion Class LPDs, the LPH. 32 DD/FF comprising Type 45 Destroyers, T23 Frigates and some of the 'Future Surface Combatant' class. 5 Survey Vessels (including SCOTT and ENDURANCE) and 22 MCMVs (50:50 Hunt and Sandown classes). We will have a Commando Brigade, together with nuclear security and Special Forces elements. There will be 5 LSL/ALSLs, 6 ROROs, 1 PCRS and some 15 other RFAs. We will be operating Lynx Mk 8 and Merlin Mk 2 helicopters, the Future Carrier Borne Aircraft, the Future Amphibious Support Helicopter, Attack Helicopter, RAF Aircraft and the replacement system for the SeaKing AEW. After going broke buying batteries I finally converted it to power from a model train transformer. This had the advantage of being variable speed. I used this quite successfully for quite a while until it disssapeared during a move a few years back. All of WG type rockets were an area bombardment weapons and deployment in large numbers was required to achieve desired effect. They were not accurate enough for pinpoint attacks even when mounted on relatively stable land carriages and platforms so what hope was there of scoring a hit on a particular port installation with limited number of rockets fired from a submerged boat???? Hitting a ship on the move with such a weapon (by design and not by pure luck) is beyond the realms of possibility IMO. << Let me say right away, that I don't want to glorify the German Wehrmacht, I just feel that the reply is a bit too harsh. The designs might not have worked at that time, and in retrospect I think we are all happy that the weapons did not help the Third Reich win the war. But the designs were not some desperately improvised that quite a few Allied nations decided to get as much of the technology as they could. The V1/V2 certainly "inspired" (I guess a bad word when you talk of weapons of mass distruction) the development of ICBMs (let's all be very happy that Hitler did not get his hands on a nuclear bomb). Wernher von Braun might be a good example here. It also seems that rockets/missiles took over a rather big role in maritime warfare. So in a way, I think the some of the weapons designs were quite forward thinking. Luckily for the outcome of World War 2, Hitler did not have the manpower and the national resources to carry many things through. Bound by the Versailles treaty, there was also limited ways to build new weapon systems. So yes, these designs did not have the effect that Hitler was hoping for, but I think, that the designers were not desperate incompetents with a lack of forward planning. Just my two cents Werner -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Infomation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: ozzie comps I was wondering if any of SMML members are heading down to the melbourne Comp in march (?) .. im not going as i've never entered & i usally go to melbourne enough for the airshow, but thought i'd ask..also in May (?) there is a Model expo in Canberra, they would base it on the melbourne expo as well with displays & comps? As im thinking of maybe going & taking something not sure if it will be ship or tank (quickly ducks any thrown sprues at the mention of tank..ops said it again..better use the term land ships)..so was just wondering what the Canberra one is like etc..know i'll be thrashed but gives me a good enough excuse to go have a captain cook (aussie for look) at it & get some research done at the war memorial if they have the books i need Hi Andrew, As well as the ACTSMS comp in Canberra, Illawarra Plastic Modelling Assoc is hosting the NSW Championships on the 4/5th May in Wollongong. Plus the Western Sydney Wargaming Society is also holding a competition on the 4/5 May. Hopefully all the above comps will have an APMA presence. I've finally updated my website with the promised feature on the Kriegsmarine's Flottenbegleiter (fleet escorts) which I have loosely called "Frigates". Its an "online photo album" and I made sure to post the photos which show interesting details for model builders in a large enough format for them to be useful. A detailed feature on the SMS Koenig class will be next, but don't hold your breath.
