About twenty-five years ago, there was an article in a British model magazine (Modelworld?) on building and modifying the Revel 1/720 scale kit of HMS ARK ROYAL, with her accompanying Tribal Class Destroyer. One of the suggestions made for the flight deck markings was to use an artist's white pencil (or yellow), and lightly draw the markings on the deck, with a straight-edge. Any circles could be done with a compass. If done lightly, there is no wax-type buildup from the "lead", and the markings look suitably worn, and realistically thin, without the need to mask. When sprayed with a matt finish, the lines look like they were painted on. I still have this model in my spares box, and the lines are still looking decent. Chris Preston, Victoria, B.C. Canada -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: SeaPhoto@aol.com Subject: Compass cutting To cut a nice, accurate circle in decal film, I use a modified drafting compass. These are the kind that use a seperate lead, not the type that hold a pencil. I found that a replacement blade for the x-acto retractable knife (this is a small blade mounted in a round plastic shank) will fit into the compass leg; this makes a perfect combination. I cut the outer ring first, and then the inner, and get great results, as the compass is very stable. Now after saying that, there are many posters of Toms work available at different locations, mostly at Museums and memorials (i.e., USS North Carolina, USS Arizona Memorial, Naval Academy Museum Book Store, USS Constitution and many others). The cover of the NRG Journal, USS Arkansas is not available as a print or a poster. Special orders of ANY of Toms work can be ordered from myself or Tom as a Giclee. Tom has a transparency of almost all of his paintings that he has done over the last 25 years. The cost of a Giclee is $900. dollars a piece signed and numbered. (i.e.. Tom's painting of the USS Oklahoma rolling over at Pearl Harbor Dec. 7 1941) I made a posting of that Giclee the day it was released, only 25 were made and it sold out in less than 2 months. In the recent Book of Pearl Harbor, Oklahoma was the only one available. All of the originals from the book and others are currently displayed at the Washington Naval Yard Museum in Wash. DC. There is a possibility that the painting of the USS Arizona painting at battleship row may come available as a Giclee. If someone would like to purchase one I'll see to it that it will be made available. The availability of Toms Giclees are based on the demand of that subject. At this time Tom chooses not have a website. Tom and I are close friends and I talk to him every day. If you have any questions in regard to the availability of Toms work e-mail me or give me a call. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: JKrakow@aol.com Subject: S-Boot stern wedge Hi Michiel According to Fock "Fast Fighting Boats" page 120, the stern wedge was added to the hull design beginning with the S-18 class (1938) The bow knuckle, by the way, started with S-7 (1933). Cheers Dave -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Michael London" Subject: Re: Painting circles >> I am looking for some advice on how to paint the gun train warning circle around the 5" gun mount of the focsle. << Try using a drafting compass with a ruling pen head in lieu of pencil. The pen is designed for ink but works equally well with paint provided the paint is not too thick. The pen is adjustable as far as thickness of line is concerned. It goes without saying that you should always test on a piece of scrap material beforehand. If he does not have it, it is not available. This is because he a very good friend of Tom's. Freeman can make you a special copy of a painting, but it is very expensive, about $900.00. My question is, ... What did the Royal Navy use for a mother ship or tender for such units? Secondly, what sort of color schemes were used by the boats and by their mother ship? Now, I am sure I have seen a company that builds extra parts for IJN ships (turrets, guns, boats etc.) Can anyone help? Thanks in advance, Evangelos -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: SHIPMDLR@aol.com Subject: Adams class photo wanted I'm working up an article for FSM on the WEM Benjamin Stoddart kit and I need some help. I have lots of good in progress photos, but what I lack is a good "at sea" photo of an Adams class destroyer (60s era) to add to the article for history. If anyone out there can send me a digital photo, I would be most grateful. They may, or may not use it, but I would like to included it with the manuscript. Thanks in advance. When the RN in the 80:ies projected for replacement of the Oberon-class SSK, they once planned for some 12 to 18 submarines. In the end, they only bought four of the resulting Upholder-class, boats that were in commission only a year or two before they were mothballed and subsequently sold to Canada. Now to the question: Were there ever any names allocated to the planned but never built other boats in the class? I recently purchased the re-released Hasegawa 1/700 Myoko (with the cool Leviathan ordnance set). While flipping through M.J. Whitley's Cruisers of World War Two, I came across a photo of the Myoko, moored in Singapore, sporting what appears to be a two tone camoflage. Can anybody out there provide any more information on this camo scheme? << Frank, One of my next two books will be the Warship Pictorial #17 - IJN Myoko Class Cruisers. The front cover, which will be posted on mine and numerous web sites soon, will be of a colorized version of that photo. I have determined that the colors used were probably all gray's. They probably have a little blue in them, but not much. Close to a neutral gray. You can see a light and a slightly darker light gray with real dark gray, making three colors. This ship was believed to have been painted this way only after losing her stern. I should be publishing this and the WP #21 - KM Prinz Eugen this summer, about July. My books are known for their excellent photo reproduction and abundance of images, all at a very fair price. I think many of the persons on this message group could give you more input as to the quality on any of my publications. For more info on my books see them at my web site @ www.classicwarships.com and there are a few future cover images @ www.modelwarships.com Thanks, Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: S-Boat question >> I am working on soem improvments on the hull of the Airfix S-boat. No I am wondering from which S-boat the Germans improved the hull at the lower stern. The Revell boat has a nice step (our wedge added) but when is it introduced, I cann't find it at www.prinzeugen.com. They show a nice picture but don't say anything about when. << This question will be answered in my book, Warship Pictorial #15 - KM Schnellboote, due from the printer tomorrow, or Friday. The biggest problem with the Airfix kit is the bow shape. It needs a knuckle. Use plastic strips to bring the hull out to the proper shape and them fill with putty.
