As the Musashi kits I've seen are of the initial configuration and Yamato kits are all of one of the later configurations it's much easier to make a few minor modifications to a Musashi kit to represent Yamato than to work a Yamato kit back to original configuration. If you're working in 1:700 I'd recommend Tamiya for the kit, GMM for etched detail set, and WEM for etched weapons and doors/hatches. Skulski's Anatomy of the ship Yamato is an essential reference, and Gakken have published 2 or 3 good books, unfortunately with mostly only Japanese text, but the picture s and drawings are excellent. One has interesting drawings of different bow shapes and paravane towing gear which I'd love to know what was being referred to. Anyone know? Hi everyone, Some time ago, I ordered the new 1:200 SOVREMMNEY by Trumpeter in China from my local hobby shop. I wanted the Chinese version specifically. I got a call saying the kit was in and when I got there, chequebook in hand, I did not find the SOVERMMNEY but a different kit by Trumpter, the SHENZHEN (DD-167) of the advanced LUHAI class! Yikes, I had not heard of this kit or seen any reviews of it so I approached the box with great trepidation (especially after seeing the price tag on the box in Canadian pesos!). The box is big with quite an ugly and garsih painting of the ship. Knowing the uneven quality of the Trumpeter kits, I was worried I had bought another dog. I should have suspected something -- my hobby shop asked me if I knew why this kit was more expensive than the SOVERMMNEY.... (he figured the Chinese and Russian versions would be about the same price) - now we know why - its a different kit! This box, however, had gold printing on it proclaiming "EXTRA FINE SCALE KIT" and in another place "STATIC MODEL". I got the box home and opened it up. WHAT A NICE KIT! Extremely find details, thin and in scale parts, a lovely Kamov Hormone helicopter - the kit is full of fine details. As a bonus, it comes with a little pamphlet containing colour photos of the ship. very clear and helpful for extra detailing. The kit can be motorized, but this time the morotization DOES NOT compromise any detail. I am very happy, very pleased with the kit. It does not come with photoetch like the SOVERMMNEY kit. Its not mentioned anywhere in the instructions in Chinese or English. I would imagine WEM's new etch will work. Trumpeter are really doing the PLAN proud. I can hardly wit to get started. Oh yes, I did reorder the Chinese SOVERMMNEY kit. I will get it one day. They were Great Lakes sidewheel paddle excursion boats before being converted into training carriers by the USN in WWII. Many thanks. Jim Davis -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Hank Lapa" Subject: Re: Worst Loss of Life in Single Maritime Incident I believe that long-Secret information has recently been trickling out of the UK indicating that the loss of the liner LANCASTRIA while trooping in 1940 (to German bombers) may represent a far greater loss of life than GUSTLAF. Similarly, the great American loss of life in a training exercise leading up to D-Day was witheld from general public knowledge, to prevent a shockwave going through the public. I don't remember where I saw the story, but I think well over 10,000 lost was the figure given. Anyone else pick up on this? Hank -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Doug Wilde" Subject: Great Lakes and Liners Tom, Not much in the way of Great Lake subjects in kit form, but there is a tremendous amount of information available all around their shores. If you have not already looked there http://www.boatnerd.com/ is a good place to start. Go to the LINKS section. Like trying to take a drink from a fire hose. The Dossin Museum on Detroit's Belle Isle has a nice selection of models and information. Pride of the collection is a HUGE SS Great Detroit. Profession model with a cut away starboard side to reveal the interior. Sister ship to SS Great Buffalo, converted to USS Sable. Housed is a separate building is Miss Pepsi, a lovely Unlimited Hydroplane, powered by dual in-line Merlins! When she thundered by you it was a visceral experience. The Lake Erie Islands Historical Society, Pun-In-Bay, has a marvelous, constant scale collection, reviewing the development of Great Lake cargo ships. http://www.leihs.org/index.html is their site. Go to the Model Boat link where you can see photographs of nearly all their collection. Only model I have been able to find of SS C&B (SeeandBee) is there. What color matches for these ships are best from the common paint ranges (Humbrol, Model Master, Floquil, etc.)? I have a reference for the Measure schemes used on the different ships, but now I need to know what shades match available colors (no mixing, please). Thanks!
