In any case, they were attributed to two principal causes, namely a German attack with S-boote and a miscalculation in timings of the shore bombardment during the exercises, which apparently caused the initial wave of engineers to land on the beach in the midst of it. I read a book called "Channel Firing" some years ago which contained what appeared to me to be a fairly well-researched account of the whole exercise (and which someone will doubtless have proven to be complete rubbish since&..;o)). Certainly the incident was not publicised at the time (some of the casualties were carrying plans for Overlord, and had to be accounted for to be certain that none had fallen into German hands) but it was nothing like the sort of scandal that subsequent sensationalist press and TV "documentaries" have suggested. Indeed, the fact that casualties were taken to hospitals as far away as Southampton would tend to make it difficult to keep that quiet. Robert Lockie Swindon UK -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Ken Goldman" Subject: Re: Worst Loss of Life in Single Maritime Incident Regarding the training disaster at Slapton Sands prior to the Normandy invasion, Samuel Eliot Morison lists the fatalities as 197 sailors and 441 soldiers. This was the night of April 27-28, 1944. Nine S-Boots engaged in the attack. I would love to buy a sheet and probable could even use a partially used sheet, should someone have one they are willing to part with. I'd also be very interested in a hobby shop which you know stocks this sheet? Thanks, Bob LaBouy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Michael London" Subject: Re: Wolverine and Sable (Note SABLE not SABINE) >> Does anyone know of any simple plan and line drawings of these two WWII carrier oddities? They were Great Lakes sidewheel paddle excursion boats before being converted into training carriers by the USN in WWII. << Good question! There are some good pics in Terzibaschitsch AIRCRAFT CARRIERS OF THE US NAVY and Chesnau AIRCRAFT CARRIERS OF THE WORLD 1914 TO THE PRESENT but no line drawings. I suspect that even if line drawings were available they would be of limited use without details of the original drawings of SEEANDBEE (later WOLVERINE) and GREATER BUFFALO (later SABLE) as in any overhead view the hull details below the flight deck would be obscured. They are not even mentioned in CONWAYS or JANE'S. Michael London -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: Tom Kremer Subject: Re: BB Texas >> The Arkansas painting was displayed alongside the "On Station" painting at the entrance to the White House mess, in the basement of the West Wing, but the last time I saw it there was early last January, and I expect the Arkansas has since been replaced. Probably with the Texas! << I understand the BB Texas itself was acquired two weeks ago by the Carlyle Group and last week Carlyle got a $5 billion dollar DOD contract to reactivate Texas for "homeland defense". ;-) Tom K -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: John Snyder Subject: USN Slang 1941 - Parts E & F "the day the Eagle screams: pay day." Box 51183 Livonia, Michigan48151-5183 Toll Free Tel. 1-877-452-1313 Fax: 1-313-538-3973 E-mail; gtlakesmem@aol.com Website: www.greatlakesmemories.com The above was taken from a 10 page flyer I received in the mail about two years ago. I never ordered from them because my collection is all WW2 and most of what they listed in 1/1200 scale, I already have. They did list some kits of the Edmund Fitzgerald in metal (1/1200), resin (1/700 and 1/350), the Edward L Ryerson (1/700 in resin). They also listed models of the USS Sable and USS Wolverine which were training carriers, built up on side-wheeler hulls. If I read their flyer correctly, both are 1/1200 scale. The price quoted for these last two items was $60.95 which is a bit steep for a model about 5 inches long!! Their flyer listed paintings, books, videos, music (cassette or CD) all related to ships. I Don't know if they're still in business or not but give them a try. I just tried it and they are up and running again although full bandwidth has not been restored. So please bear with us. Warmer weather is predicted this weekend, so things will be improving greatly. The web master has added some new stuff to the Flagship site. Part 1 of building my USS New Jersey hybridized assault carrier (the drawings) model is there for all to see. Part 2 is on the way where I begin scratch building the hangar deck. Also, some new book reviews (D&S USS Enterprise and Squadron Signal US Cruisers Part 2) are on the site. Check it out.
