Take care, Kurt Van Dahm Westmont, IL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Jeff and Laura Herne Subject: Navy Slang - Attn John Snyder Hey John, Way back in the day, the Navy came up with terms to describe Japanese merchant ships based on the phonetic alphabet...Freighters were 'fox' Transports 'Tare' and tankers called 'Sugars' They then classified the ship according to the layout ship....Fox Sugar was a stack aft transport...then they added another tag to classify size, so...Fox Sugar Dog was an aft stack freighter of approx 8000tons...and so on and so on....confused??? I sure as hell am...anyone have any record of these classifications? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Doug Wilde" Subject: Lyme Bay Disaster I think Frank was referring to the Lyme Bay Disaster. James Foster Tent takes that event as the starting point to his excellent little book "E-Boat Alert: Defending the Normandy Invasion Fleet" published by Naval Institute Press. Not many photographs, but that was not the reason for the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone building the S-boat models. Helps put everything into perspective. Also suggests many interesting diorama subjects. Would make a VERY interesting movie, too. Doug Wilde -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: IAAFru2@aol.com Subject: Re: Blue Water Navy Decals >> Am looking for one of the Blue Water Navy 1/350 decal sheets for the US Navy (early World War II). << I to am looking for this set if any one knows where to get it please let me know also thanks George -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "John Rule" Subject: Worst Losses >> I believe that long-Secret information has recently been trickling out of the UK indicating that the loss of the liner LANCASTRIA while trooping in 1940 (to German bombers) may represent a far greater loss of life than GUSTLAF. Similarly, the great American loss of life in a training exercise leading up to D-Day was witheld from general public knowledge, to prevent a shockwave going through the public. I don't remember where I saw the story, but I think well over 10,000 lost was the figure given. << Although there was a high death toll in the Lancastria sinking, I am certain it wasn't close to the Gustlof. I had an uncle who survived the Lancastria sinking. As for the D-Day exercise that went wrong, I'm certain that the death toll was nowhere near 10,000 even though it was very significant. In military terms it was a real snafu with tragic results.
