It should be very easy to do her up as HMAS Perth. << I agree - the Skytrex casting can be built into a very presentable model of either Sydney (as it is) or Perth, with some kit bashing. If you want to see the results of detailing Skytrex models check out my latest dio in the splice the mainbrace section of the SMML website. In Alexandria '41 you will see a detailed Ajax and a converted Dido (to Naiad). They were not difficult to 'bash'. Were submarines refueled and resupplied in this manner, or did they rely on "mother ships"? I don't recall ever seeing or hearing about submarines participating in such an operation as has been the subject of recent Journal threads. Nuclear powered subs don't need fuel replenishing at sea, of course. Also, did the vessels involved use collision mats to minimize the damage that might be caused in a "bumping"? Any comments? Skytrex has indeed come out with a 1/700 kit (as well as a built-up model if you want to pay more) of the Perth's sister ship HMAS Sydney, but you should bear in mind that the Sydney still had her single 4-in. guns and the Perth had newer twin 4-in. guns that were, I think, in different positions than the singles on the Sydney. In other words, you might have to do some surgery, which may not be easy on a white metal kit. Incidentally, another book on the Perth (other than a good one that was published in Oz in the 70's) is "Ship of Courage" by Brendan Whiting. I haven't read it yet but it should be good. Hi, I just got another issue of the IPMS/USA Journal, and once again it doesn't have the old "Ships 'n Tips" column. Is the column officially dead or what? I know Rusty doesn't do it any more. Art Nicholson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Sanartjam@aol.com Subject: German "Graphite Gray" Hi, I've seen that some German ships in WWII (such as the Lutzow and Emden) were at times painted up in a color that has been referred to as "graphite gray" in English. I'm not sure of the German name of the color. Is this color in the Snyder & Short chip sets? Does anyone have a good idea as to how you can paint up a model to get the graphite gray effect? Also, I've seen a photograph of the torpedo boat T-25 in a solid dark gray (with silver funnels); does anyone know if it was painted in graphite gray or another color? Thanks! Art Nicholson -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Peter Samolinski" Subject: Re: Changes at FSM I second Rusty's thoughts viz-a-viz Paul Boyer and "Fine Scale Modeler"! And speaking of which, for members contemplating an airbrush (and there's been recent discussion here about that) there are very good articles in the current issue (March, 2002) on that very subject; and it's all hands-on stuff by real model builders. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Ken Goldman" Subject: Re: UNREPS from: NAVYDAZE@aol.com >> OK to all of you SMMLies please excuse us old guys for rambling off on the subject of UNREPS. I realize it has cut down on the conversation about ship models which is what this site is for. << Keep the sea stories coming. One of the reasons for building ship models in the first place and in taking the time and effort to super-detail them is to hold that piece of history in our hands and perhaps imagine being on board ourselves. If there are more posts of late on UNREPS rather than on models, it is mire likely the result of coincidence than of "old guys rambling" pushing modeling aside. Besides, maybe the UNREPS stories will encourage some of us to build appropriate dioramas. So, it's about modeling after all. Maybe WEM folks could shed some more light on it.. Is NNT still marking it?? I thought i did go to the NNT web site as i thik they also have an online shop i cannot re-call as is not bookmarked for some reason -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Andrew Jones" Subject: US Navy tests Norwegian KNM Skjold The Norwegian fast patrol craft KMN Skjold has triggered interest by the US navy warfare development command & the naval special warfare command for further evaluation. The Royal Norwegian Navy & the US navy has signed a deal where the Skjold is to be lent to the US navy for a year. The boat features many stealth technoligies similar to that of aircraft. In prepararyions for its deployment to the US, the KNM Skjold was repainted in ligh colours for its operations in a warmer climate -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Russ Smith" Subject: HMAS Perth Skytrex makes a 1/700 model of the HMAS Sydney. It's a very nice model. I have one that I plan to convert to the Perth. You can get the 4" twin turrets from WEM and scratch built the crew shelters very easily. I'm waiting on photoetch cranes which were backordered to finish mine. www.skytrex.com Good luck with your model!
