Poore" Subject: Re: Ship painting question >> I want to paint the entire ship in a dark gray - probably Floquil's Harbor Mist Gray or even darker - making sure to get the color in all the nooks and crannies....then over spray with a very light Kriegsmarine gray, taking care not to cover those aforementioned nooks and crannies. << Doug, What you've described is basically what aircraft modelers refer to as "pre-shading". They will go in and cover all of the panel lines with black paint, and then apply the color coat; being careful to leave it a touch translucent so the black shows through. If you go to www.hyperscale.com or www.modelingmadness.com, you can find several build reviews outlining this procedure. Devin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: S-100 Schnelleboote >> Only 5000 kits? I always wondered what the production run of any model is. 5000 seems a small number considering SMML already has 1200 subscribers and there are thousands of hobbyists worldwide who never heard of SMML. << I was using a very conservative estimate. 5000 is a minimum order from an injection model company. It is quite possible that Revell Germany ran as many as 20,000 kits???Also. Gear Box Toys, a die cast toy manufacturer, purchased Revell/Monogram and Revell Germany recently, and are doing some things that are royally pissing off many of the model distributors, at least in this country (USA). This may also be a contributor to the no S-100 kits in the USA problem. Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Darren Subject: Re: Ship painting question or painting dark first Doug, A friend of mine who normally builds armour ( gasp!) uses a technique I have always found intriguing. He paints the model overall flat black then starts with a dark base colour and gradually uses lighter shades of greens/browns or whatever until he has the colour he likes/wants. This leaves him with a variable shaded finish that has all the cracks and joints dark. It looks fantastic when done. A while back he started doing 1/700 ships and using the same basic techniques he turns out a very nice paint job without ever using the official colour! I've seen him do the work and I've seen the results, but I still haven't worked up the courage to try it myself on anything other than a Godzilla figure, which turned out very nice btw. He uses a very low pressure with very thin paint that goes on very lightly. It gives him a lot of control on how much paint gets put on and reduces over spray significantly. I wouldn't want to do a large model this way, I always get impatient. HTH Darren Scannell Ontario, Canada -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Turner Publications USS California (BB-44) Derek, You were too kind in your assessment of the Tuner Publications book on the BB-44. In two words - It sucks! For that matter, all the Turner Pub. books suck. They are complete hash jobs. I would like to use a few more choice words here, but I dont want to scare the ladies! As Alan Raven once said about a certain camouflage book, he would not even keep them around as a back up to toilet paper. Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Bradford Chaucer Subject: Re: Detter than Dremel >> Does anyone know of any manufacturer who makes a more reliable, harder, tougher, longer lasting router bit than Dremels? 99% of the routers out there do not use the 1/8 inch shank that Dremel uses, and Dremels router bits use HSS, which is blunt and useless after half a second! Any ideas? P.S. For those who fear I have gone over to the dark side into sticks and strings and away from plastic - fear not - this is to make my own bases. And even if I did venture there, Kerry would help me come to terms with myself (or at least he would try) << Depends on what shape you are looking for. You want a carbide bit. There are straight cutting some chamfer and half round carbides (actually ball shaped). You won't find the more traditional ogee or quarter round bits common to woodworking in 1/8 dia shanks. That said, there is another alternative. A dremel is kind of light for what you want to do. Consider an edging type router - the small hand helds used for edging Formica counter tops. They take 1/4 in bits. You can go for a good one, or a cheapy from Harbor Freight (Chicago Electric) They would be adequate. Regards, Bradford Chaucer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Kelvin Mok" Subject: Better than Dremel Yup. Go to a jewellers' supplies store. Their stuff not only costs less but they have a much wider choice including diamond tip bits. You'll probably like their chain collection too, from a reel and sold by length. Plus a lot of neat stuff useful for model finishing. Kelvin Mok -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject: Re: AO-64 & UNREPS OK so is this the longest thread we have had on a subject - at least we all stayed in good spirits and no one got upset. For myself, I enjoyed it!! So what's next? Anyone have any ideas? Mike @ NAVYDAZE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: ike standifird Subject: airless air brush Has anyone heard of an airless air brush? Recently there has been available airless spray paint systems for painting houses and such. Seems like a very usefull idea for an air brush system, no compressed gas, could use indoors safely without spray booth and NO overspray. Thanks. Ike -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Ken Goldman" Subject: Re: dremel router bits - not Woodcraft www.woodcraft.com carries diamond tip carving burrs in sets of 20 and open stock carbide burrs, all with 1/8" shanks. Though not exactly router bits, they might work for you. About the new Revell /Germany S-100 kit. I recently talked to a clerk at AA A hobbies in Magnolia NJ about it and he informed me that Revell /Germany has changed it's shipping policy. They recieve the orders and wait until get so many and then send it out. That store is supposed a big shipment in March. Perhaps that's why we haven't seen it yet in the states. Craig -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Clive Lawford" Subject: Model Paint Names and Codes for the Waveney/44' MLB's Hi All, I would be very grateful with any help with this new project I have. I have recently set up a new page on my web site at http://home.online.no/~lawford/xrl/model-paint-codes.htm where I am trying to include the paint names and codes for all the paints used by model makers on their model Waveneys/44' MLB's. It should be noted though that these paints should be available internationally, as the web site is available worldwide. I would imagine that most car paints are available everywhere form the car suppliers concerned. The areas of most interest are the superstructure, the inside of the wheelhouse, decks and the hull (above and below the waterline), as well as the colours for any lines or logos. My model page can be found at http://home.online.no/~lawford/xrl/model-lifeboats-photos.htm Many thanks, Clive. The speed of nuclear carriers? How about the submerged speed and diving depth of the nuclear submarines? << If we tell you, we'll have to kill you! ;^) Seriously, there's LOTS that remains understated by the armed forces, the Navy included. Even though she's now scrapped, there are performance figures about BAINBRIDGE that I'm sure the Navy would still consider classified. I personally witnessed speed performance aboard her that was far in excess of her stated top speed. I know that the same holds true for ENTERPRISE, one of whose skippers was reprimanded for games with a Soviet sub.... Can anyone help? Thanks Peter -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: rosenberg Subject: painting schemes of DKM Admiral Scheer Could somebody explain to me what is the camo scheme of Admiral Scheer during her engagement with HMS Jervis Bay and during her involvement in Spanish Civil War especially on her turrets.
