How do the words go."....Bubble, bubble, toils trouble......" Dick Wood -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: AOE Speeds and John Snyder >> Not surprisingly, John, that is exactly what I expected someone to say. I wonder, as an expatriate, (not ex-patriot) how you handle the idea that you carry around all this classified knowledge in a somewhat foreign country. << Oh, it's a VERY foreign country! >> Do strange men with magnifying glasses follow you down those country lanes? << It's the deerstalker caps that keep giving them away. >> Do they ask you all sorts of leading questions while you are trying to enjoy a pint or two? << They're learning that it takes more than THAT! >> Of course, they already exposed you (pun unintended) to their modern version of Mata Hari, and you went for it in a heartbeat.......... << Guilty, as charged. Cheers, John Snyder -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: CA139JOHNF@aol.com Subject: Re: Ship's Bells Larry Oulette wrote--- >> I am assuming 'Store' here means warehouse or storage facility and not a retail store. The US Navy does not scrap ships bells, they are removed before the ship is sent to the scrappers. I also believe that the Navy does not sell to bells to anyone. Most are donated to the namesake city or state, loaned to museums, or stored away for safekeeping. << S. Sachsen wrote--- >> not entirely true.... the bell for the USS Hornet was found at an 'antique shop' somewhere in Southern California. the shop owner had it outside on the front porch. the finder paid cash for it and had it flown to the ship, which at that time had just been newly turned over to the Foundation. the shop owner recognized an opportunity and, as I was told, the buyer had to pay top dollar for it. so it is possible that the same had occurred with the Canberra's bell. << Sorry, Shirley, Larry's right. The Navy is not in the business of selling artifacts. At the Washington Navy Yard there is a medium sized warehouse that houses hundreds, if not thousands, of artifacts relating to the US Navy. One end contains heavy shelving with (guess what?)ships bells. Also ER Telegraphs, Annunciators, etc. This is where Canberra's bell came from. What you have, more than likely is either an artifact that was on loan from the Navy and stolen and sold, or a reproduction. Sadly this happens frequently. The Resources of the Navy Historical branch are limited when it comes to investigation of missing items. As a result, artifacts are now only loaned to Museums and/or qualified organizations. Paasche sells a turbo-airbrush that is used for "very fine detailing" (read: more freehand work and less masking). It looks quite a bit different from a regular airbrush, but still uses a compressor (or gas). I have not been able to find any specific performance info or reviews on the web. The turbo costs about $200, so I would want to know a lot about the turbo before I bought one. Dave Miller -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Jim Johnson" Subject: Top Speeds and other Sea Stories While serving onboard the USS America (CVA-66), the story I was told was that the ship would do 55 mph with the boilers running at 110%. This equates to 46+ knots. I heard this from several sources. There was nothing official about the number and it may have been the navy version of an urban legend, called a sea story. Several months before I was aboard in 1967, the ship was in the Med heading for Canes France for liberty. The USS liberty was attacked by the Israelis at the start of the 67 mid-east war. The two F-4B Phantoms that were on 5 minute alert were launched and the air wing was readied for further action when the word came that it was a mistake. In the meantime, the ship was ordered to the area ASAP. They floored it. According to the guys that were on board, the USN escorts and the attending soviet troublemakers were out of sight in less than an hour, despite their best efforts to keep up. Not bad for an oil burner. (Had a chief at Machinist Mate school who claimed that if they came upon a nuclear ship and the conditions were right, they turn down the forced draft blower on the boilers and lay a large cloud of black oily smoke over the nuke). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Rick Lundin" Subject: Re: Understating performance parameters Once upon a time/Now this ain't no .......... Ship speeds have always been prime grist for "sea stories". My neighbor who served on one of the Mitscher class DL's in the 1950's claims that his ship could do 40 knots. Does anyone know, or care to spin a good one, about ship speeds? How fast is a 688 class sub? What about a Nimitz class CVN? How about some real numbers, or failing that, some sea story-level numbers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "Jansen, Matthijs" Subject: Tamiya PoW I want to build the prince of wales (tamiya), does anybody know where I can find some pictures of this ship on the internet? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: iamnot@edsamail.com.ph Subject: Re: Airbrushes >> One problem area that all airbrushes (except Aztec) have is with the tip or needle. << I'm not intimately familiar with the Aztec and though I've seen one, I haven't got the chance to open it up and inspect it closely. I am very much interested in the needle-less design as my current airbrush had its needle bent. Unable to purchase a replacement, I instead 'honed' the tip to make it sharp and pointy again. However this is merely an interim solution. How does the Aztec work without a needle? And with that in mind, what are the advantages and/or disadvantages of a needle-less airbrush? (except of course having a needle bent) Thanks! Anybody out there listening? << Can't help you on your search for the Repulse, though I remember passing it up many times as a youth in the not that distant past. Sadly enough for a snap-tite Ford Mustang (I was five....). But I too have been recently bitten by the 1/600 bug...small enough to collect, and I like full-hull. Don't tell that to all my waterline ships, though. Anyway...it reminds me of a question I've been meaning to ask. How is the 1/600 Arii/Otaki Yamato/Musashi? They are sitting on the shelf at the Hobby shop I pass on the way home. I'm looking to make the 1/700 and 1/350 Y'm'tos in boxes in the cabinet jealous. john fiebke -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Connor, Michael" Subject: Desparately seeking Repulse Dear All, >> Ok ok, if somebody would start making new 600 scale kits I "might" open my wallet. Anybody out there listening? << I second Keith's request. My wallet is ready too. I'm not sure of their top speed but it is high. I did however get into the drydock at the Phily Navy Yard and photograph the Detroit while she was high and dry. She has two 26' six blade props. An awesome sight to be down there under them.
