So when the new ships are built they will sort of pave the way for the next total re-design of carrier fleet. << CVN 76 is the USS Ronald Reagan. CVN 77, as yet unnamed, will be a modified Nimitz incorporating some of the CVX design features and will replace the Kittyhawk in 2008. CVX 77 will be the first totally new design and is supposed to replace Enterprise in 2013 and CVX 78 should replace the 60 yr old JFK in 2018. The build rate is roughly 1 carrier launch every 5 years and at that rate only one shipyard can be sustained, Newport News will remain the only yard in the world that can properly build a real aircraft carrier. >> Someone earlier mentioned going back to the old names lexington etc, I saw not so long a ago someone did a stealth carrier model with the name "William Jefferson Clinton" (this will probably start the ball rolling for jokes names ..maybe not naming william jeferson but naming it Hillary Clinton.. or the ship that will never go down) << Ha ha. That Hillary!!! Good name for a ship. Also if we ever have a lethal but totally dysfunctional weapon system we could name it after a first lady with alcohol problems who killed her high school boyfriend and has to bail her kids out of jail. Anybody guess who that would be? I guess I should have asked this question straight away and perhaps would have got right to the bottom of my question. The kit appears to have molded plank decking on the deck. Does anyone know if these boats had wood plank decks. Rick -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Chinese Companies >> Not quite true. Banner is the label applied to Chinese kits imported to the US by Marco Polo Imports. Trumpeter has a supposedly exclusive import agreement with Steven's International. << Banner is the label that this honest, trustworthy Communist Chinese company Trumpeter used to sell to Marco Polo to get more money! The whole Banner Arizona thing was a real back door deal. They would never break an agreement! Heck No! I for one completely trust the Communist Chinese, especially with my aircraft! Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "Maurice Northcott" Subject: New Carrier Names I heard that following the custom of giving carriers Presedential names, one of the new carriers was either to have no name at all, or be named "USS Just Can't Make Our Minds Up" in commemoration of the period at the most recent election! maurice -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Sean D. Hert" Subject: Stuff to do in Pompano Beach? I'm going to be in Pompano Beach FL for part of a week in April, and was wondering if there was anything I should check out in the area? Will also be in Orlando for a few days.... Thanks loads, Sean D. Hert -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: PXGOLLIN@ctrl.co.uk Subject: Paint Queries Maybe some people on this board can help with some of the following ; 1: Were all Royal Navy Paints supplied ready mixed, or were they mixed from base colours ? 2: In "Naval Video Time Capsules 11 - British Pacific Fleet, phase 1", some of the RN's Eastern Fleet's ships are shown sailing past the USS Saratoga as she leaves to rejoin the US Pacific Fleet. It is very apparent that the colours of the standard pacific camouflage varies (particularly the blue panel) even though the film is shot from the same spot, presumably using the same camera and film. Does anyone know if the variation is down to poor colour retention of the paints used, or individual mixing, or??????? 3: What are peoples views regarding "SCALE EFFECT"? Thanks, Phil -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Katz, Gene S" Subject: Re: 31-Knot Burke Interesting thread on this. ADM. Burke came to my employer to be honored for his namesake, the DDG 51 lead Aegis destroyer. May have been the launching or commissioning, I forget which, since we have so many of them. He was still sprightly and erect, though a bit slower in movement. He answered someone's question about the "31 knot" label this way: his can was to make turns to keep up with a TF, and was radioed and asked if he could maintain 30 knots, he answered "am proceeding at 31 knots", one knot faster than had been asked of him. Truth is out there, somewhere... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From: John Snyder Subject: News from WEM Hi All, We have received the test shot of our new 1/350 kit of the minehunter, HMS LEDBURY, and it is absolutely lovely. Even better, cost of the castings will be lower than anticipated, allowing us to drop the price. Complete with exquisite white metal parts, photoetch, and full set of RN decals, the worldwide (ex-VAT) price will be 46.77 Pounds (about $66.41), shipped post-free worldwide. Our latest 1/350 Narrow Seas subject, Schnellboote S-80 (kit NS-018) is now in stock and shipping. Cost of this little jewel is the same as her sisters S-10 and S-100: 19.96 Pounds (about $28.35), postfree worldwide. Our paint man phoned this week to report that our "Colourcoats" Imperial Japanese Navy paints are now being mixed and matched at the paint company: 10 colours as in the Snyder & Short expanded IJN paint chip set. In addition, we have received a small stock of Ken Macpherson's book, "Corvettes of the Royal Canadian Navy 1938-1945." This book has now gone out of print, and when these are gone...well, they're gone. After that you'll only find them on our pre-owned book list--at a higher price, of course. Cost now is 19.95 Pounds plus shipping. Finally, work on our PE 7201, the photoetch detail set for the Revell 1/72 S-100 is well underway, and we should have the sets in stock in about 3 weeks.
