I'd appreciate any help/suggestions/references about proper rigging. Thanks, Art Rohloff -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: "Katz, Gene S" Subject: Wish List Ships I won't even begin to touch the thread on Trumpeter, China, etc. However, if anybody out there in the real world is reading our list (including Revellogram), I'd like to humbly suggest a few of my wish list plastic kits, in 350 or 400 scale: Italian BBs of WW2 (Vittorio Veneto, Roma, etc) Alaska Class CBs K-Pennant Corvettes (will accept 200 scale here!) Italian and French CLs and Ocean Escorts (Captain Class) of WW2 Submarines Surcouf, Nautilus/Narwhal, I-400 Class (150 or 200 scale) Atlanta Class CL(AA) and other 6-inch CLs IMHO, Gene Katz -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: Peter Webster Subject: Re: Hypothetical.. For something different - I would like to experience the nervous enthusiasm and anxiety of the Australian troops on the S.S. Benalla on the voyage to Egypt in 1915 ( which included my grandfather), and for a second thought - the Victory at Trafalgar (with a scalp to toe flakjacket of course!) Peter, Sydney, Oz -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Mike Leonard" Subject: In search of... Seeking the following for future projects: (1) WW2 Royal Navy aircraft in 1/1200 scale (2) Instructions for the old Heller 1/400 Admiral Hipper (NOT Prinz Eugen) Thanks! MWL Alexandria, VA USA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: SteveWiper@aol.com Subject: Re: Apology I really appreciate that. It takes a big person to admit mistakes. Thank you. Sometimes persons will get related stories mixed up and create a new story that will be perpetuated. And so on. And so on. P. S. I never gave Trumpeter my Indianapolis pattern. This rumor is an example of the above statement. Steve Wiper -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: 1250man@attbi.com Subject: Chinese companies >> Ever Heard of GENERIC, this happens all the time in business, Hell the legitimate company could even have some one in their organization market the exact same product under a different name or product label. i.e. Pharmaceuticals (Drugs) << GENERIC products are the result of either a patent or copyright expiring, or of a licensing agreement with the holder of a still valid copyright or patent. You don't just get to make an exact copy of someone else's product and sell it as GENERIC. If that was lawful, then copyrights and patents would be worthless. Paul Jacobs -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: Rear Admirals >> So John, do you and Caroline exchange roles as "Rear Admirals" then depending on whether the Miata or the Landrover is out ;-þ << Ain't no back seat in a Miata, mate.... ;^) Cheers, John Ahhh, so you're the "Rear Admiral" then are you??? ;-) Shane -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "john fiebke" Subject: Mothballed fleet >> If I am the only one or do others have a mothballed collection too? << I kept all the 1/700 kits from when I was twelve or thirteen. That was about 15 years ago, so my skills have gotten a bit better even after a six year break for college. I looked at them last week upon further investigation, the Hornet and Akagi have no damage that I wouldn't have replaced with photo-etch these days anyway. So the mothballed fleet may be called back to active service. I honestly don't remember giving them such awful paint jobs. Old Polly S was really globby. The bigger issue is the ships who's "keels" have been laid, but haven't been launched yet. Eight as of last night. And on another thread: Which of you guys is going to pick the Bismark to go back in time and serve on? Bring back a paint chip of those turret tops so we never have to sit through THAT discussion again. I'd go myself, but I'd want to be on the American crew that sailed the Nagato to Bikini. I read an article by one of those guys in Sea Classics (IIRC). Kind of sad, really. john f. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: "Edward F Grune" Subject: Trumpeter's Arizona prices James Corley (AAA Hobby) wrote on the subject: Last word on the "Chinese thing" >> Remember, at Chicago M&M had them at $40, IIRC (maybe more). When they finally came out on pre-sale various companies had them at different prices. By the time the kits were shipped, everybody except VLS had matched a lower price and the retail was set at $29.95 - VLS is still asking $34.95 and not selling many I have a feeling. (They'll be the place to go when nobody else has them!) << Yeah; when I saw that in Chicago I said to myself - "That isn't a 40 dollar kit, maybe 20 dollars max." I made my price bogey. Just before the end of the year I found the Banner version at my local Hobby Lobby for $18 USD. Top that with a 30% off sale and I got that 40 dollar kit for a bit over 12. It didn't hurt so bad when I added the cost of the brass and the cost of the paint (WEM Colourcoats - of course) to the cost of the kit. Ed Mansfield, TX -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: JRKutina@webtv.net (John Kutina) Subject: A Hero's Welcome http://carlvinson.thesunlink.com/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: Jim Mc Subject: Copyright Guys, enough with the sea layer stuff already. Many of us have seen this issue go around, and around, and around. Some of us are involved in the business, to be sure, and I'd bet they are very aware of what is going on with what, what they can, and can't do, etc. All of us belong to a nation, and many of us have very strong nationalistic views. This is not a business list, nor is it a national list. Do the words "Ship Modeler's Mailing List" ring a bell? Jim McCormick -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Subject: Trumpeter Carriers I for one am very glad to hear that the upcoming Trumpeter 1/350th scale kits are new designs or tooled from purchased masters. That takes away any trepidation I may have had towards buying them. I can see myself purchasing two Essex class, and two Hornet's. This plastic option makes for a nice compromise, as I really would like a 1/350th scale Hornet and Enterprise, but they are not high enough on my priority list to buy in resin (only Yorktown and Lexington fall in to that category). Devin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From: Subject: Model Figures Regarding the recent posting on painting 1/48th scale naval figures (yes, I know it was last week or so, but my time to partake in the email replies is limited with work and now being back in school). There is a book published by Kalmbach by Shep Paine called "How to Build Diorama's" (here's the link on the Kalmbach site: http://db.kalmbach.com/catalog/catalogJump.lasso?Menu=Books). In it he covers many aspects of painting figures in similar scales. If you have never seen any of his work, you should check out this book. His figures are literal works of art. My goal in modeling is to someday be able to do figure work of that caliber. Devin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From: Burl Burlingame Subject: Re: Chinese companies Chinese companies are simply not bound by the same copyright restrictions as other nations. "Pirating" is a way of life. However, as China steps out into the global economy, they're being more careful about annoying others. As for "copying" kits, there's nothing wrong with examining existing product, particularly in regards to engineering. Compare, for example, the way the 1/32 SPAD from Hobbycraft is engineered, to the 1/48 DML/Dragon SPAD. No one squawked then, but then it was a Canadian/Korean company lifting design from the Chinese.... Burl Burlingame -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From: "Kelvin Mok" Subject: Colour References I just received the publications Warship Pictorial # 15 and #16. The reference sources get better and better all the time. Just one request to the authors-publishers. If there are colour plates in a publication do include a page or at least a sidebar with the colour chips and their official descriptions. It will be so convenient to have the colour reference when using one's imagination to put colour to a written description, a B+W photo and for painting a model. I realise it may be hard to get an exact match when using process colour as in printing but a close match is good enough and for matching a bottle of paint to the colour chip. Kelvin Mok -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From: "Don Simon" Subject: Re: USN Slang 1941, P - R In response to John Snyder's Navy Slang, "Rocks and Shoals: navy rules and regulations, or what will happen to you if you don't keep your nose clean." I believe there was another definition of "Rocks and Shoals" called "Death and worse punishments." Don Simon Troy, VA USA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From: "Michael Taylor" Subject: Tamiya KGV Allright guys, I got the KGV as a freebie. As far as British Battleships of WW-II (Raven/Roberts)goes , lets pretend it doesn't exist. I'm assuming from past posts that for one reason or another everyone builds the Prince of Whales kit and avoids the KGV like the plague. Well I have the KGV and compared to the plans in the book- British Warships of WW-II it doesn't appear, to me, to look too bad. Please, without references to impossible to obtain books, does anyone have the knowlege to tell me what, if anything, needs to be done to the Tamiya KGV to represent the ship in the time period Tamiya intended to represent it (1945). Thanks again...Mike T -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From: "David Edgerly" Subject: Re: Hypothetical/ time travel Well, I'm still new to ship history but I'd like to be on the HMS Tiger at Jutland to see that battle. There is also the journey of U123 during the first Pauchenschlag in Jan '42. I do hope we can stop the political discussion VERY soon. Never talk religion or politics or you'll lose some of us forever. Modeling/research and marine history should be paramount and let's forget about 'ho killed 'ho and get on with it! (apologies to Monty Python) question: any new 1/350 sub kits on the horizon? any 1/200 PE for the Planet Type II's? Cheers Dave E. Austin, TX PS. there was a very nice ISW 1/350 Navajo at the San Antonio IPMS this past weekend. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19) From: "John Rule" Subject: Countries and Politics 1. Well said Robert Lockie (SMML 1556). It is indeed true that political soapboxes should be kept out of a multinational forum such as this. 2. Just because we trounced the USA in the Olympic Ice Hockey (both men's and ladies) doesn't mean we think any less of the USA and their valiant efforts. 3. For any of you out there unfortunate enough not to have a copy of the new Classic Warships book on the German Schnellboats, get one. This is the best of the series yet (I have them all). The pictures are incredible and very comprehensive. John -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20) From: HAZEGRAYADM@aol.com Subject: Re: Another FINAL word on Trumpeter You can call me unethical, selfish & perhaps Immoral, but if I can get a half dozen 1/350 scale kits of an Essex with the refit options at a competitive price, I'll buy them no matter where they come from. My purchasing quantity will go up or down depending on the quality and accuracy of the kit. Bert McDowell -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21) From: Robert Leonti Subject: Chinese models I dont have experience with Chinese ship models but do have knowledge of their woodworking equipment....IT STINKS. It is inaccurate and very poorly cast. In a trade or hobby such as woodworking where accuracy is not critical (one does not have to work too tolerances of even hundreths of an inch), Chinese woodworking equipment does not "cut it". Using this equipment is an effort in futility. It is JUNK! Capt.
