Nuff said. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject: Re: Enjoying our hobby I agree with RhinoBones, I remember as a kid, anytime I got some money I got a model. Now growing up in the 1950's you could get a Revell or Monograhm model for a dollar or two. I built them as fast as I could find them. I was so proud of my collection. Jump ahead about 30+ years and I am lucky if I produce one or two models a year - even though there are 50 times more models to choose from. Some of which, like Tamiya just about assemble themselves - some of the pieces fit so good = Please don't "ping" me for that statement. I think this is a personal thing that I need to resolve - do I want something that belongs in a museum or do I want something that belongs in my collection, just for MY enjoyment. But to you all that build them right down to the correct rivet, I applaude you for your efforts and perhaps that is my problem that I am trying to reach a level that I do not have the expertise, knowledge or patience to do. About the handles - hey if someone feels comfortable using a handle so be it - lot of forums have so real S.O.B's that will not identify themselves but in does make for some interesting conversations. Contraversial threads - great I love them - sometime it gets boring unless we are all jumping on something, this or that. I really like the way this forum is handled, directed and contributed to. I also like all the hints, knowledge and information that you guys contribute. In the lower right hand corner you will see the Mini Hobby Model logo. Where does the BOX say Trumpeter? The seller even says it is a MHM kit - 5th word in the description - but then he erroneously put Trumpeter in the description and banner. << They are made by Trumpeter, but they are made for Banner models. As I recall, the French army used eagle on top of flag poles during Napoleonic times, and the extensive Historex range might yield a fine, angry eagle. Excellent service from England to California! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "D.Przezdziecki" Subject: Battlecruisers final part I do not really want to make song and dance about this particular discussion but my point was that if the DEFINITION of the battlecruisers becomes more important than what the battlecruiser in fact was, we are putting cart ahead of the horses. IMO "battlecruisers" were those ships which their designers choose to classify ( or in couple of exceptional cases reclassify) as "battlecruisers". That's why Invincible was a battlecruiser and Regina Elena wasn't. For the very same reason Courageous, Glorious and Furious can't be clasified as battlecruisers because Fisher himself instructed DNC to draw up designs for an "improved light cruiser". The possible argument that this was done for purely political reasons IMO doesn't hold water since Invincible was classified as an "armoured cruisers" for political reasons (secrecy) but was reclassified as soon as the need for secrecy was over. Lots of mines, missiles, and torpedoes on display, as well as the Trieste II in the parking lot. It's at the gate of the torpedo station. A couple of hours drive away in Portland, OR is the submarine USS Blueback, at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. Both venues have websites. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From: Derek Wakefield Subject: Re: Hypothetical Time Travel The orignal question stated you could not change/affect history. My take on that condition would mean you would more or less be a ghost like observer that the participants from that time frame could not see, touch, hear, etc. IOW, you'd be present, yet not present. The closest comparison I can think of is the character of Al in the series Quantum Leap from a few years back. That said, I'd like to be aboard the USS California on 7 Dec 41. Specificially up in the maintop to witness what Theodore Mason described in Battleship Sailor. It would be nice though to take along a camera and answer the question of whether the battlefleet was Dark Gray or Navy Blue once and for all. ^_^. I'd also like to be aboard the California during Surigao Straight. Couldn't see anything, but the battleline firing at night during the last ever battleship vs battleship dual would be very impressive none the less There's probably others, but those are the two that came to my mind first. Derek Wakefield -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From: "Doug Marrel" Subject: ICM Hood/Essex I noticed that Hobbyland had the ICM Hood and USS Essex back in their "future release" preorder section. Has anyone else heard anything about them getting closer to release or are they just teasing us again? Off topic, they also show a 1/16 M26 Pershing remote control kit from Tamiya coming out, Oh, be still my beating heart. It will bust my model budget until 2003 but I will have to have it. Only a 1/350 injection USS Texas (WWII or CGN) would make me happier. p.s. Is the 1/400 RM USS Enterprise worth he money or is it better spent elsewhere? Would that be the same docu they showed on the German television some years back? I have it taped here somewhere, but never really had the change to view it properly, might have to do that one of these days. When on the topic... did anyone see the Scharnhorst docu on BBC2 last friday, I started watching, but as usual with these late (remember it's an hour later here on the continent) documentaries I fell asleep after five minutes.... Well, it's on tape so nothing's lost... Erwin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: SantMin@aol.com Subject: Re: deck decal >> are you talking about a sheet of decal material with a deck pattern printed on it?? Won't that look rather fake - like contact paper?? Also how will you attach deck fittings and furniture?? You can't really glue to the decal - any stress will just pull it off. << Bradford, The project is on the back burner right now, other pressing work going on. I made some sample decking in a few different colors. Will have to sand the plastic deck but with the seperate pieces and having to remove all the gun tubs, the deck has to be sanded anyway. Decal is thin so it will go over most small deck items before they are painted and snuggle down. Decal can be scraped off if needed to glue anything onto the deck. Yes, it might look phony, will have to experiment. All will have to wait a while. Well, if you can wait a little bit, you won't have to mix. "Colourcoats" will be adding a line of modern navies' paints, and the samples have just gone to the paint company for matching and mixing. The line will include the following: M 01 Royal Navy Grey, and M 02 Royal Navy Deck Grey based on matches I made aboard HMS ILLUSTRIOUS at last year's International Festival of the Sea (FOTS); M 03 U.S. Navy Haze Gray, M 04 Deck Gray, and M 05 Flight Deck Gray all matched to FS colour cards, and M 06, the current U.S. Navy Anti-Fouling red matched to an actual sample of the paint; M 07 French Navy Grey, and M 08 French Navy Deck Grey based on matches I made aboard FS DE GRASSE at FOTS. M 09 Bundesmarine Grey, and M 10 Bundesmarine Deck Grey based on matches I made aboard EMDEN at FOTS. In addition, we're adding US 14, Norfolk 65A Anti-Fouling Red (WW2) matched to an actual sample we've obtained (it's quite different from the current anti-fouling red, M 06). As a side note, we've been informed that tinning of our IJN paints, and Royal Navy B6 (WW2) will begin this weekend or on Monday, so these will be in hand before long.
